The upstart firm Foundryside is struggling to make it. Orso Igancio and his star employee, former thief Sancia Grado, are accomplishing brilliant things with scriving, the magical art of encoding sentience into everyday objects, but it's not enough. The massive merchant houses of Tevanne won't tolerate competition, and they're willing to do anything to crush Foundryside.

Prepare to have your mind blown to smithereens. Shorefall, the second book in Bennett's Founders series, takes the story and the ideas first posited in Foundryside and doesn't just build on them, but blasts those ideas to the stratosphere. This is a thrilling, engaging, exciting sequel that takes the reader on a strange journey through one of the most unique fantasy worlds ever created.

Tevanne is a city state in this world which is built on the sea and has numerous canals and mountains. It

Me, finding out I got approved for the ARC of this on NetGalley: YES OH MY GOD FINALLY IT'S HERE I LOVED FOUNDRYSIDE GIVE ME MORE

Me, shortly thereafter, realizing it's been over a year since I read the first one and I've forgotten some pieces of how it ended and can't find a recap anywhere online and am now afraid to start this one: well, this is just scrumming* fantastic.

* well, if nothing else, apparently I remembered this universe's profanity, so there's that.

“He looked up into his mother’s beaming face. I have died for this. And I will gladly die again.”

I received and ARC of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

Ladies and gentleman, he’s done it again! I had never heard of this author before I read foundryside but now I plan to read more of his books. I stayed up late for 2 nights reading this book because I couldn’t put it down!

This book starts off with action and is wonderfully paced! More amazing magic, more of the unique,

Robert Jackson Bennett himself could knock on my door and punch me in the face and it would hurt less than this wait.

I don’t know how I am expected to wait until 2020 for this book. I have never anticipated a book so highly. Help me.

I received a free eARC of this in exchange for an unbiased review.
This picks up the story of Sancia and her Foundryside compatriots three years after the events of Foundryside. Sancia, Orso, Berenice and Gregor have worked to establish a free guild of scrivers not beholden to any of the major campos. They are ready to set off their big idea to bring down the campos from within when the worst happens, Ofelia Dandolo brings back a hierophant. The rest of the novel deals with their attempts to

All in all, a less exciting follow-up to the terrific Foundryside. Sancia remains a fantastic character, although her inability to put two and two together regarding her physical health was strikingly out of character. This book seems to have fallen afoul of 2nd-book-in-a-trilogy syndrome, with many pieces being arranged in order to move the characters and plot along to where the author wants/needs them to be for the big finale. And unfortunately for me, I'm not that excited by that direction. ...more

Received a NetGalley copy in exchange for a review.

The first book in this series was a 3.5 for me which I rounded up to 4, and I did not enjoy this book as much, so I guess I have to give it 3 stars. I will always be on the lookout for future RJB books, although I won't finish this series.

It is hard for me to put my finger on what falls flat for me: Maybe the magic system seems to have so many arbitrary elements that just happen to work out for what the plot needs at the moment; maybe the dialog

You know what we have here? What we have here is a chaotic, action packed sequel that doesn't fall prey to the dreaded 2nd book blues. There were some issues with convenient problem resolutions that (too) easily moved the plot along in order to circumvent some sticky spots. This always rankles me. I'm not good with easily obtained powers, accomplishments, or love. Is that a dealbreaker this time? No, maybe because it wasn't rampant. There was, however, an inordinate amount of

Robert Jackson Bennet has mastered textured world building. His books create societies and technologies that both mirror our reality and extend into the fantastical. He consistently explores deep questions of society, humanity, faith, and politics throughout his work. It's hard to walk away from reading anything he's written without being haunted by his narrative, characters, and philosophy. His books are never comfortable and his characters complex and flawed.

Over time, his books have become

In Foundryside, Orso Ignacio and Sancia Grado are having a tough time with their scriving startup firm. Scriving involves encoding everyday objects with magic (code?) to make them do things they

I received this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

Foundryside was the first book by this author I had read. I was hooked. The cast of characters and a magic system I'd never seen before pulled me in hard and fast. So when I found out there were going to be more books I was excited. It's actually the reason I made a Netgalley account.

Then I read one of his older books which left a bad taste in my mouth due to the use of the bury your gay trope. After that, I wasn't sure I'd

The other novel I am looking at this week is Shorefall, the second book in the Founders series and the sequel to Robert Jackson Bennett’s 2018 release, Foundryside. Foundryside was probably one of the most popular fantasy books of 2018 and I imagine that quite a few other reviewers and fantasy fans are going to be keen to grab the sequel when it comes out. Bennett, who has also written the highly regarded The Divine Cities series of fantasy books (a series that I am actually really keen to check ...more

I am deep in the ebook ARC of Shorefall via NetGalley.

Thanks to NG for approving for my first ever read and soon first review on their site. Pro tip that worked for me: If you're a true fan of this author, and you don't have a NetGalley account, make one, and specify in your NG bio that you got the account entirely for the purpose of reviewing Shorefall. Hopefully that will get you an approval and thus the ability to contribute to early reviews to help people find out about this book and the

Shorefall, Robert Jackson Bennett's much anticipated sequel to 2018's Foundryside, builds upon the success of the original and improves on the formula in every discernible way.

This novel begins with an exhilarating, intense sequence of events that grips you from the jump and never lets go. We are introduced to adversaries with Machiavellian ambitions that would make most J-RPG villains go, "Uh, yikes." Bennett's experience writing Horror really serves this story through his ability to build

This book is a great continuation of the Founders trilogy. The book is (unsurprisingly) very well written and interesting to read. Definitely read book #1 first or you'll have a hard time understanding what's happening. These books remind me of Brandon Sanderson's Steelheart series. Aside from one or two crude comments, these could be YA. The story follows a small team of likable good guys, each bringing a certain skill to the table as they battle a super bad guy with godlike powers. There isn't ...more

This is AWESOME!

No spoilers, no matter how much I want to go on and on about all the great things in this sequel, but I can say a few things.

If you loved how so many wonderful magical goodnesses came out of the magic system in Foundryside, how they could all argue reality out of commission, find new loopholes, reprogram it again, and do it all while being one of the biggest magical heists in modern fantasy, you will totally FREAK OUT when you see Shorefall.

Foundryside was all kinds of awesome

Shorefall by Robert Jackson Bennett- Well, pretty much all the hype you read about this book comes to pass in a scary adventure written large by the demonic god-like players involved. The nail biting action and well devised set pieces are nonstop throughout. Sancia, Bernice, Gregor, and Orso are back and Foundryside is working on a new method of outfoxing the staid merchant houses, when they hear of a terrible thing that's about to happen out at sea. Off they go and are dropped into a battle ...more
