When Lavinia Maycott's home is attacked by villainous pirates, she doesn't know how to find peace being a survivor. With her family murdered, she has only one place to go. However, her betrothed's estate isn't the safe haven she was expecting.
Alone and running for her life, she finds acceptance with a small group of survivors intent on fleeing the island in search of safer territories. When that proves more difficult than any of them realize, Lavinia must chose between letting harm come to her new friends or sacrificing herself to save them.
It will take all of the courage Lavinia didn't know she had to make it off the island alive, but even then, vampires and pirates roam the seas, making nowhere safe.

Crimson Horizon is a fabulous start to the Blood of the Sea series. Lavinia’s life is turned upside down after being attacked by blood drinkers.
I highly recommend Crimson Horizon. Following on from this addictive, fast paced and captivating storyline with twists and turns, I can’t wait to read what Heather Renee and Lela Grayce create with next book in the series - Pale Horizon.
Going into this I wasn't sure how it would go but it ended up being better than I thought. It has pirates and vampires which I thought was cool. In the story Lavinia's family is murdered. She is sadly the only one to survive. Then to make matters worse the man she is supped to marry is not who she thinks. The ending was nuts and with it that way I look forward to seeing how this series continues.
Crimson Horizon is absolutely Bloody Brilliant Pirates of the Caribbean meets Underworld. Heather Renee and Lela Grayce have brought their A Game big time with this addictive new series!!!
Once I started reading I couldn't put it down. Lavinia captured my heart from the very beginning with her fiery spirit, loving nature and sassy personality. She is the kind of Heroine that I love to read about! All of the characters are awesome even the Baddies. lol This story is a total thrill ride shrouded in mystery, bursting with Action, Adventure and Sizzling Romance!
Jamson Holy Hella Hotness! I don't want to give to much away but prepare to Swoon hard ladies. He is Dangerously dark N sexy! 😉
I can't wait for the next book Pale Horizon jonesing for my next Vampire Pirate fix! 💜💜💜
Historical PNR. Pirates and vampires!! A good book and I loved the themes involved. Slow burn M/F romance involved. Will be interesting to see where the story goes.
Crimson Horizon is the first installment in a young adult paranormal series featuring pirates and vampires (yes, this is what drew me to it). The story is told from the point of view of Lavinia, a young lady whose family is brutally murdered by pirates. After the attack, she goes to her betrothed, Pierce, a wealthy man with the resources to provide her with a good life. It doesn't take her long to uncover the kind of evil creature that Pierce is, causing her to run away with a group of survivors. Ultimately, Pierce goes after her. While on the run, she begins to discovers things about herself and the vampire/pirate/vampire hunter world around her. Secrets are revealed, questions left unanswered, and the book ends on a wicked cliffhanger (to be expected since this is the first of a rapid release trilogy). There is some romance but it's not too over the top. It's apparent by the end of the book that Lavinia plays a major role in the world around her, but what that is has yet to be uncovered. The author provides unique world building with some unique aspects to vampires at an enjoyable pace. I would definitely be interested in reading more in this series.
Ok I didn’t love it. I wanted to, but I didn’t. The plot never seemed to flow to me. Things seemed to happen out of nowhere with nothing leading up to them. I felt like it went in circles with some of the same things happening over and over. It wasn’t until almost the end that I started finally getting into it. I almost didn’t finish, and felt like I kinda had to force it.
The characters didn’t have much depth to them. All their personalities were kind of bland, without much emotion or insight into who they were. No back stories except for Lavinia.
It has potential to get better and a cliff hanger that made me almost want to read the next one. Not sure it was enough though. I’m glad so many loved it, it just wasn’t for me.
This is what happens when two great authors decide to create a world together! One amazing adventure! I've had high expectations and they were all fulfilled. I absolutely loved this story! This is an incredibly exciting and suspenseful story situated in a gritty, unpleasant, old world overrun by vampires and pirates, and even worse - vampire pirates. I was glued to the pages from beginning to the end and I finished it in one go. And I should immediately mention the abrupt ending that left me in shock and dying for the next book. The characters are quite interesting, especially Lavinia, the main protagonist of this story, and the focus around which everything revolves. It is amazing how the authors slowly reveal her uniqueness detail by detail. Then there is Jameson, he is quite special as well. But Pierce, Lavinia's betrothed, is something else, a new breed of maliciousness and evil. He was without a doubt one of my favourite characters of the story. Fantastic villain who adds so much suspense to the story, well done. This is one of those amazing stories one just gets addicted to. It is not about the characters as much as it is about the story and the need to know what happens. Forget about romantic depictions of vampires and prepare to be horrified by them! These are not standalone novels and they only make sense if read in order. Reading order is the following: Crimson Horizon (Blood of the Sea Book 1), Pale Horizon (Blood of the Sea #2), and Obsidian Horizon (Blood of the Sea #3) coming soon.
*I received a copy of this book from the author for my honest review.
I was given the chance to be a beta reader for this book, and I was so grateful for the opportunity! When given a brief synopsis, I said, "You had me at vampire pirates." I loved the story. It was unique and exciting from beginning to end. There was a fresh take on vampires. It was something I had never seen before, and I've read my fair share of vampire books.
The characters are fantastic. Their small group of friends consists of Henry, Alice, Nathan, and his young niece, Nettie. Alice teaches Lavinia to fight, Nettie instantly loves her because Lavinia reminds her of her mother who was attacked, and it's all just so lovable. Attachments are made quickly between characters, as well as between the reader and characters.
This is a rapid release trilogy, and the books aren't super long. The pace is fast, but it doesn't feel rushed. It's action-packed from the beginning and really kept my attention the whole time. The authors took turns writing, but the chapters all flow together cohesively. You cannot tell who wrote what, or even when the writer changes.
I really enjoyed this book! It is unlike anything I have read, while still containing the elements of YA fiction that I love to read--if you're a reader, you know what I mean. If you're looking for something new and easy to read, I recommend it.
Crimson Horizon combines vampires with pirates, an interesting original fusion that definitely catches reader’s attention. It is a fast-paced, action filled paranormal romance with a strong female main character fighting to stay free first from her arranged marriage and then from the creatures of the night. Lavinia’s island home is taken over by sea-faring vampires tearing her world apart and revealing the true nature of some of the island’s existing inhabitants.
Crimson Horizon is a young adult slow-burn romance set in a historical paranormal world. It is a tale filled with adventure and suspense set in the 1500’s, similar in vibe to Pirates of the Caribbean but with vampires. It is a fast-paced adventure that sees Lavinia find allies, try to evade capture and escape her island to another. It ends on a wicked cliffhanger so be warned, however all books in this series are already released so you can binge the series if you want to know what happens. The Blood of the Sea series has also been released in an omnibus edition with additional chapters from other character's perspectives.
Crimson Horizon is an action driven paranormal romance with vampire-pirates and a persistent, scheming villain. I would recommend this for readers who enjoy paranormal romance, pirates, vampires, historical pnr, slow-burn romance but fast paced action and adventure.
One grand adventure that will leave you breathless!! These two talented ladies have created one entertaining and jaw dropping tale! Who doesn't love a good vampire story!? The cover is stunning and I keep wanting to go back and stare at it! This features a girl who's future is not bright and doesn't have much to make her happy. Nia has a heart that is pure gold. Once she takes you into her world, you're in her heart forever. Her past is sad. Pierce is the evil guy who wants to finally possess his prize. He'll stop at nothing to attain his goal and bloodthirsty pirates are his to command. With a deal made and a promise to cash in on, Pierce follows Nia's trail like a demented puppy. The ending will leave you wanting to throw your reading device or book across the room. Well done ladies!! Not only is this gripping, it is highly addictive and makes you race through the pages to see what will happen next!!
I am in love with everything in this book. The only thing I wish, is that it was longer. I can't wait for the next book!
Okay so why the 4 star? Well it has to do with the MC, I wasn't that big a fan of hers at the start of the book. I don't know, something about her, irked me, and it took me a bit to start to like her as the MC, and well as a growing major character of this book and future series. But outside of that, I loved the detail, the world building and I loved the way the story flowed and connected.
This book was such a fun and engaging read, and I believe one that I have been waiting for. It kept my attention till the end and left me wanting more. What else to do you need?
So please take my super high recommendation and my stamp of approval, that you need this book in your life.
What a promising, and refreshingly original, start to this series! My interest was piqued at vampire pirates, but the story took this to a whole new level. The turn of the storyline was unexpected and left me even more anxious for answers (hopefully coming in book two). I loved Jameson and Nettie and felt the historical period was done convincingly. It did feel a little slow at the beginning and a couple more places went fast, which pulled me from the story a few times. The layers to the story were impressive and I liked how uncovering one piece of information revealed an even more complex underlying layer. Overall it was a great read and I look forward to the next one.
I rushed through this book in one sitting and moved on to book 2 until it was time to go to bed. The next day I found I wasn’t interested in the storyline at all anymore, so stopped reading the entire series.
Why? Because the characters lack the right kind of depth. The storyline was confusing and seemed to gloss over things that either couldn’t be explained or that should have been to keep the believability going. I also found myself annoyed with many of the interactions and circumstances the MCs kept finding themselves in. To experience one stumbling block after another, all I need to do is stay in my own life. I read to escape and find enjoyment, not more strife.
I have no words for what happens when two of your favorite authors get together and create a masterpiece. Vampirates is my new favorite vampire lore. And here I thought I would never relate the name Lavinia to anything other than A Little Princess. Her character growth is worth every page. Even so, the bad guys are still my favorite I think. I'm so happy with this awesome world that was built and I am even more glad this is a trilogy releasing one book right after the other. I cannot wait for the next book I'm so excited!
I absolutely loved Chrimson Horizon. A stellar beginning to what promises to be a riveting series. Our MC Lavinia is a strong capable herione who has suffered tremendous heartache in her 18 years. After her home is invaded and her family is killed by vampire pirates, Lavinia finds herself on the run with a group of strangers who, like her, are survivors. As they flee their island home in search of a safe haven the group will soon find out that Lavinia is not your average human and no place is safe from the blood thirsty pirates that have turned their lives up side down!
Pierce is a wealthy man who makes a bargain with prime the lead vampire, he is turned and lets the vampires take over the town killing any they want in exchange pierce gets lavinia.. he wants her turned so she can be his wife for eternity. Luckily for lavinia shes not as easily turned as others. With everyone she loves killed she turns to jameson a young man who she was being to fall for. He helps her survive. Full of action vampires pirates and an epic story this is one series you dont want to miss
Sea witches, blood bonds, magical daggers, and vampires. Meet Lavinia whose world has just been thrown upside down. The fables she grew up with have turned out to be real. After being sold by her uncle to be married her family is murdered and she has nowhere to go but to the man she has been sold to. This is where Lavinia's story really begins. We are introduced to Jameson, a Hunter with a secret, and an unlikely group of survivors. I was engrossed in this story from the beginning. I can't wait to read book 2.
Omg wow!!!!!! Heather and Lela wrote an incredible book about vampires, pirates and hunters especially pirates as vampires!! The main female character Lavinia is a strong fearless woman!! Jameson all I can say WOAH!!!!!! The romance between them two is amazing and all the danger and mystery in this book makes you not able to put this book down!! The Cliffhanger ughhhhhhh!!!!
Wow! What a ride this book was! It's an amazing start of a new series and a first time for those two authors to write together and it is definitely a success! It's a mix of a vampires and pirates and humans set in olden days somewhere on islands. It's this kind of a book where you simply just have to read it in one go! The emotions runs high throughout the whole book and keep you on the edge of your chair at all times! Great story and I can't wait for book two to come out!
In this new series the authors break the stereotypical paranormal romance mold. This book has pirates and vampires. Take almost everything you think you know about either of them and toss it. The world building is rich. The characters pull you in and make you want to know more about them. The plot itself is fresh and new. I'm excited to see new ideas and perfectly written. I absolutely loved this first installment in the series. I cannot wait for the next book.
I really enjoyed reading this book. Pirates, vampires, curious hybrids of the two...there is so much mystery and adventure contained in these pages.
If you are a fan of fantasy tales that loom o'er the high seas, you will find this story gripping. Prepare to meet a strong-willed girl that cannot be 'turned' by the vampire pirate that purchased her from her father...and get ready for a page turner with an ending that leaves you craving more.
Crimson Horizon isn’t the first vampire novel I’ve read, but it is the first I’ve read to have vampire pirates, so I wasn’t sure if I’d like it at first. But then I opened it up and found myself really enjoying it. The authors did a great job building the world and creating an intriguing character with Lavinia, especially with the mystery surrounding her abilities. I look forward to reading book 2 to see what happens next.
This was a very interesting telling of vampires. I really liked that it was not all as we are use to. Vampire pirates are really a different kind of take on this story. I’m very curious as to what Lavinia is. And at the end who says “hello daughter”. I will definitely read the next one. Only wished there was a little more romance between Lavinia and Jameson. I felt there wasn’t much build up with them. But still like them as a couple.
I read a lot of paranormal romance books and generally I can at least finish the book, but I couldn't get all the way through this one. The storyline is boring to be honest and the characters romance feels forced and falls very flat. The way it's written is also moderately juvenile, which doesn't bother me as much IF it's a great story, but sadly this book just wasn't interesting to me. I got about 75% done and just had to move on.
This new vampire pirate series is quite captivating. I haven’t read many pirate books and didn’t know what to expect and I was pleasantly hooked from the first chapter. Heather Renee and Lela Grayce are a fabulous team of authors who work well creating this pirate world. Lavinia is an interesting character and her adventures at sea with her friends will keep you on your toes. The supporting characters are lovable and you come attached to them as well. The ending leaves you wanting more and I definitely look forward to the next book.
I'm not a huge fan of books that are based in the past. I'm not a reader that enjoys past themed writing but this book made up for it by being amazing. I was so entranced with the setting and characters that I no longer noticed that it was based in the past. I thoroughly enjoyed the supernatural factor in this book and can't wait to see what happens next in the series.
Awesome read, well written with a great plot and characters. I was engrossed from start to finish. This book has action, romance, drama, twists and turns. There are vampires, pirates, vampire pirates and awesome world building. It has one hell of a cliffhanger! I can't wait to read the next book! I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book.
I simply couldn't put this book down. It was addicting and very good. The characters are so easy to fall in love with and I finished this book in a matter of hours. It was absolutely amazing and I loved the whole vampire pirate aspect. I'm excited for book 2 and the ending was definitely insane and a cliffhanger. This series is amazing and book 1 had me hungry for more.
