A past he’d give anything to forget. A haunting guilt he can never make right.
The one woman who held the power to heal his injured soul.

Caleb Covington promised to find and kill the men who’d murdered his fiancée. Seeking peace upon leaving the Union Army to become a Texas Ranger, he turned to bounty hunting after Regina’s death. After months of dogged pursuit, killing two of the three men, he’d grown weary of the chase, accepting a deputy job in Splendor, Montana. The peace he sought didn’t last long.

May Bacon left the scandal and rumors behind, choosing to become a mail order bride rather than live as a spinster in her New Jersey hometown. Although marriage was her dream, she refused to settle for a union of convenience. Her desire for the tall, charming deputy had her body trembling with excitement, and his request to court her gave May a chance at a future. Her joy didn’t last long.

The appearance of a young boy not only stalled Caleb’s plan for a future with a woman he cared a great deal about, it brought forth the memory of a past he’d never put behind him. But his past wasn’t all that stood between them.

Unusual happenings and dangerous strangers stalk the streets, presenting a risk to more than Caleb and May.

Will the menace sweeping the town push them further apart, leaving their friendship beyond repair, or will it bring them closer as they search for the source of the peril?

I received an advance copy of this book, and I voluntarily wrote an honest review.

Angel Peak is the latest book written by Shirleen Davies. This story takes place November, 1869 in Splendor, Montana Territory.

Caleb Covington is a deputy. He is friends with May Bacon, who came to Splendor from New Jersey as a mail order bride. Since he is attracted to May, he asks her permission to court her. May is also very attracted to Caleb, so she agrees.

As soon as May agrees, Caleb learns he has a two and a half year old son named Isaac. As a result, Caleb is unsure if he can court May at the same time as he takes care of Isaac. Therefore, he decides to ignore her.

Caleb already has a lot of other obstacles to overcome before he can fully commit to May. When he was a Ranger in Austin, Texas his fiancé was murdered accidentally from “a bullet meant for him.” He cannot get over the guilt of her accident nor can he move on from his love for her. He also feels guilty that he left Isaac’s mother without telling her how to find him if she ever needed him.

After Caleb finally explains his background to May, she becomes unsure of his ability to ever fall in love with her. She is also uncertain if there can ever be a place in his life, and his heart, now that he has Isaac.

There is, also, a secondary story about Clare Billings, who comes to Splendor looking for Doctor Charles Worthington. He is an old friend from home whom she had loved before her marriage. Clare’s first marriage was an arranged one which was not based on love. Since she is now a widow, she wants to reunite with her old love.

Charles happens to be out of town for a while, so Clare has to wait until he returns. Unfortunately, someone burns down the church, with Clare in it. This secondary storyline is so intriguing that I enjoyed it as much as I enjoyed the main plot.

Meanwhile, to May’s further distress, her father, his nasty new wife and her son come to town to visit her. They upset May with their pushiness and attitude toward Splendor and its citizens.

There are many twists and turns in this book along with lots of adventure and intrigues. Furthermore, Caleb and Claire’s “off again, on again” relationship is rife with misunderstandings and miscommunications.

In spite of all of the action in this book, Ms. Davies skillfully manages the different events so that they all wrap around each event in a way that makes it easy for the reader to understand and enjoy this book.

Healing A Broken Heart

Caleb Covington, Texas Ranger couldn't overcome his grief of having lost his fiancee Regina. He buried himself in the whiskey bottle and the barroom girl Sadie. Sadie was a balm for his wounded soul. Caleb decided to join his friend as a deputy in Splendor to change his life and thoughts.
Mae Bacon was one of the mail order brides that came to Splendor for a new start in life. Her mother died and a father that was seldom around made up her mind for a change.
Mae desired a relationship with Caleb but thought it was one sided. He was afraid of a serious relationship because of his experience losing Regina. His grief was still apart of his life. Caleb got a shock when a woman from Austin showed up with a little boy and said Sadie had died and this was Caleb's son. His guilt from leaving Texas without a word of goodbye or information on where he would be to Sadie was eating him up. He never knew she was pregnant. Caleb carried his grief and guilt and didn't seem to be able to overcome them to begin a new relationship with Mae.
Mae's father shows up with a new wife and stepson who covertly plots to get close to Mae in order to have access to her friend so they can kill her for an inheritance the stepson would get if she died. The true colors of the new Stepmother and Step brother come out when he is caught attempting to kill her.
Mae decided her hopes are in vain and accepts a dinner invitation from another man and it scares him awake to think he will lose her.

Redemption Mountain is one of my favorite historical western series. Angel Peak is number 12 in this series by Shirleen Davies. Angel Peak is as wonderful as the first book in the series. Often a long running series becomes stale or repetitive but not so with this series. One of the best elements is that this series shows how the west helped the country heal after the Civil War. Soldiers and civilians from both sides have found a peaceful community in Montana. That is not say trouble doesn’t come calling as it does in Angel Peak but that the community pulls together to overcome it.

As in many of the previous books, the main characters must work through their sorrows and their personal struggles so that they are free to love. Caleb Covington has known lost but is ready to start afresh. He is loyal, brave and trustworthy. A true man to admire. May Bacon has also seen her share of trouble but she has come west to also start anew. The pioneer spirit that she has is inspiring, giving the reader a glimpse into the caliber of women who headed west. Others, not always for good, affect the romance of Caleb and May bringing danger, new situations and the past that must be faced for these two to find the love that they so deserve. What a moving story.

The publisher/author gave me a complimentary ARC of the book which I voluntarily chose to read and reviewed. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Caleb and May's story

Caleb Covington has his past that nearly destroyed him. His fiance was murdered during a shootout. She got caught in the crossfire. Then he found consoling with Sadie, a saloon woman who was a friend of his fiance.
When he left Austin to go after the three murderers he left Sadie behind. Three years later, a woman shows up in Splendor with Issac. He is his son by Sadie. He's two and a half years old. He is the spitting image of Caleb.
Caleb loves his son.
May Bacon is one of the four mail order brides that came to Splendor. She has been in love with Caleb since the first time he talked to her. She knew he was a great deputy but didn't know his secret past.
Doc Worthington's was originally from Boston and left when he was a young man. He left the love of his life behind. Claire came to Splendor to find him and see if he still felt for her like he did? She didn't know that her life was in danger. Someone has tried to kill three times. Once by burning down the church with her in it. Then, the second is by smothering her with a pillow. And the third time, she was shot.
May's father came to Splendor to visit her and brought his new wife and stepson.
There were many twists and turns in this story. But loves does prevail.
Another great story by Shirleen Davies. Strong heroes and heroines.

I was lucky enough to receive an advance reader copy of this lovely book. Another great read by Shirleen Davies set in the town of Splendor, while the main focus of the book is Caleb and May’s relationship, there are sub plots featuring both danger and romance, and the opportunity to read a little more about characters from previous books as they go about their day to day lives, however you don’t have to have read any of the other books to enjoy this one. There is a real sense of community in Splendor where people care about and look out for each other and work together to get through adversity. Having read all the books in the series a new book by Shirleen Davies feels like catching up with old friends, learning more about some of them and meeting new ones that I hope to learn more about in the future.the books are not written to a formula each one has a different stand alone plot yet they are linked by their well researched sense of the period and what it was like living in a growing town in Colorado in the 1860s and the varied characters whose lives hold your interest and leave you looking forward to the next book.

ONE EXCITING ADVENTURE!!!
Wow! Talk about how the West was really won. This is one action packed, fast paced, hard hitting, adrenaline pumping, nerve racking, nailbiting, heart pounding, pulse racing, page turning thriller that's as riveting as it is captivating. With increasing drama, fear, heartache, loss, grief, danger and suspense along with rising tension as the plot thickens. A strong realistic and believable storyline that keeps you on a razors edge and your attention firmly on the tale as it unfolds. All the twists and turns, ins and outs, ups and downs, along with a few unexpected surprises that make for remarkable experience. The characters and scenes are written with such realism it really pulls this bad boy together beautifully. With such graphically detailed descriptions it's easy to picture each scenario as they play off one another in perfect balance. Shirleen did an amazing job bringing this read to life. Fantastic job Shirleen, thanks for sharing this little guy with us.

If you enjoy books about the old west with mystery and romance thrown in, Angel Peak is the book for you. This is Book 12 in the Redemption Mountain series, but it reads well as a standalone book. The advantage to reading more books in this series is that the characters reappear and you experience the feeling of being in the town of Splendor and getting to know everyone there.
As with the other books in her series, Angel Peak is well written with no obvious grammatical or editing errors. That’s an important criterion for me. Characters are well-developed and true to themselves. I especially enjoyed the fact that even though this is Caleb and May’s story, there were several other story lines woven within. It made the book even more interesting, but did not make it hard to follow. The only thing I regret is that now that I’ve finished the book, I will miss the town of Splendor until Davies writes her next novel and I can come back for a visit.

I absolutely loved it!

Caleb Covington asks May Bacon permission to court her. Within the very same day his life is turned upside down. No longer sure if May would still want him to court her and confused with the sudden changes that have taken place in his life, he puts the idea of courting back on the shelf. This leads to heartwrenching situations between Caleb and May. Moreover, there are various hidden threats in the village, which may or may not have fatal results. If that weren't enough yet, Caleb's past will catch up with him...

Overall, I really loved the book. There were some points, however, I didn't like. For example, there was some profanity in it. Without giving away spoilers, I was a little disappointed that the author didn't add more suspense and depth to the storyline of Caleb's enemy.

I received this book for free as an ARC in exchange for my honest review. The opinion expressed above, is completely my own.

Deputy Caleb Covington thought he had finally put his past behind him, gotten past losing the love of life to outlaws and wanting revenge against them, when he decided to court mail order bride May Bacon. But then a woman shows up with a son he never knew about and he starts to think he may never be good enough for May. May doesn’t understand how her friend Caleb could suddenly turn so cold against her. When Caleb finally tells her about his past and his lost love, she doesn’t know if she can be with the man she loves if he never loves her back. Add in a visiting father with his self-centered new wife and selfish stepson, a suspicious fire at the church with a wealthy woman from back east trapped inside, and an outlaw who is back for revenge of his own and you have a historical western with plenty humor, romance, and suspense.

I received this as an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This is the 12th book in the series. The book is centred around Caleb and May.

Caleb is haunted by his past and the heartbreak and guilt he feels following the murder of his fianceé. He vowed to find and kill the men responsible. After leaving the Union Army, Caleb became a Texas Ranger, when his fiancee, Regina is murdered, he becomes a bounty hunter. After months in the pursuit of Regina's murderers, he's killed two of the three men, and has grown tired of the chase, so accepted job as a deputy in Splendor.

May Bacon left New Jersey following some rumours about her father to become a mail order bride. She dreams of marriage but she refuses to settle for a union of convenience. She's desired the tall, charming deputy since she first saw him. Caleb's request to court her gave May a chance at a future. Her joy doesn't last long when a woman shows up with a little boy.
Then there's some strange occurrences and dangerous strangers that stalk the streets, presenting a risk to more than Caleb and May pushing their feelings and friendship to its limits.

I enjoyed the characters within this story but I did feel that maybe it didn't 'fit'. Caleb has apparently grown weary of chasing his fiancee's killers but it isn't willing to move on with May. I just felt that as he is still so hung up on Regina but was happy to move on from finding her killers? Just didn't seem to fit.

The side story of Clare and Charles was sweet but I'm not entirely sure it really added to the story as a whole.

Outstandingly awesome western romance in the Redemption Mountain series. Ms. Davies continues to give readers the wonderful well developed characters with an exciting story. If you enjoy western you'll love this book and series. May came to town as a mail order bride. Caleb is a hard working deputy with a less than stellar last but sets his eye on May. This story has suspense, romance, good guys and bad guys. I received a complementary copy of this book and chose to write a review. I very much look forward to reading future books by Ms. Davies.

This Redemption Mountain Series continues to bring great characters to the town of Splendor. It’s cold weather, some snow, Christmas season is coming closer and lives are once again changing. I’ve loved Caleb Covington from the beginning of the series when he arrived in town; and, I admired the spunk and determination to become a strong woman when May Bacon entered the scene. Watching the town grow and the families caring for each other has become the strong suit for this series. It’s always a good thing when a baby is born or a youngster takes his first step. Thanks for a great read!!

Caleb and May

Caleb carried a lot of guilt on his shoulders for the loss of a past love. He cared for May, but did not think he could love her and forget his deceased fiancée. May loved Caleb and was waiting for him to love her. Isaac was a blessing and surprise for Caleb. I loved this story and seeing Caleb and May finally coming together. There were good and bad people in this story and the more you read, the more you were intrigued how they all came together. Keep up the wonderful and enjoyable writing Shirleen Davies.

Another delightful story in this series. Caleb suffering from his past wants to court May when a son he knows nothing about is delivered to him. Taking on the responsibility of looking after Isaac makes him wary to pursue May. That added with May's father and stepmother arriving in Splendor complicates things further. Together with the suspense story surrounding Clare and Doctor Worthington make this a story well worth reading. Read an ARC for an honest review.

Caleb’s fiancée is murdered in front of him, so he leaves the Texas Rangers and becomes a bounty hunter. After finding and killing two of the men he settles down as a deputy. May decides that becoming a mail order bride is the only choice she has. She likes the deputy but he still hasn’t got over his fiancée. Then the suspense starts when weird things happen.

A great read from Shirleen.

I loved the story of May and Caleb. May is a woman who made up her mind shortly after moving to Splendor. She is one of 4 mail order brides to come to the city. You love her strength.

You get to re-visit many of the wonderful couples you've met in Splendor. The appearance of Isaac is a surprise but you learn how he is taken in and loved by the people of the community. Then danger comes and threatens to ruin the budding lives that you have read about.

In the end, you get another loving couple that lives in a community of very loving people I highly recommend this book and this series!
