A solid second book in the DS Grace Allendale series. This time someone is strangling young women, with nothing connecting them and no leads. As another young girl is targeted Grace finds herself up against a callous killer, and she's running out of time...
I did enjoy this book, though I didn't find it to be as hugely gripping as the first in the series. It is a sound police procedural book, I just didn't find the tension as realistic as the first one. Having said that I will still be looking out for further books in this series.

Mel Sherratt has been a long time favorite of mine. Not just her ability to create great characters, but also the ability to set a scene. I feel like I know Stoke on Trent after reading her descriptions.
The storyline here is especially poignant as the murder victim is a 16 year old girl. Sherratt does an excellent job of portraying her friends, the way they ping from sorrow to self centeredness in a matter of seconds, the hormones and the sudden outbursts.
Grace is a great main character. She is trying to feel her way along in her relationship with Simon, a journalist.
The plot is fast paced and kept my interest. I liked how Sherratt gives you the viewpoint from the “other side” in between Grace’s chapters. Even with that, I didn’t suss out how it was all going to come together.
This book could be read as a standalone, but you definitely benefit from knowing more of Grace’s backstory which is given in book one. It’s also fun how Sherratt will throw in characters from her other series, but it’s definitely not necessary to have read those.

I have now read quite a few of Mel Sherratt's books and can honestly say apart from becoming a fan, I have enjoyed all of the books that I have read so far. This is the second book in the DS Grace Allendale series which is set in Stoke-On-Trent. With no witnesses to the murders and no clues left behind, Grace has her work cut out to find out who is behind them. I was gripped from the beginning. The pace is set fast. There are a few red herrings to keep you guessing. I highly recommend this book. It could be read as a standalone, but your always best to read a series in the order that they were written in.

Tick Tock by Mel Sherratt is s the second book to feature DS Grace Allendale. I absolutely loved Hush Hush and could not wait to read more. This book could be read as a stand alone but to really understand the characters and story I would suggest reading them in order. Grace has a past, and a family that she is not proud of but she is starting feel at home in Stoke. I really enjoy this series and hope that there is plenty more to come. It is clever and not at all predictable with strong characters .

Vụ án lần này mình thấy hay hơn tập 1, phức tạp hơn và tên sát nhân thì bệnh hoạn gian xảo hơn. Sát nhân phần trước thấy còn thông cảm dc vì sao hắn lại mún giết người... phần này thì đúng là quá tội nghiệp cho mấy nạn nhân 😭

Tick Tock is another gripping tale by Mel Sherratt. I've followed Mel's books for some time now and she never disappoints. DS Grace Allendale is a very likeable and relatable character and I love the Stoke on Trent setting. Everything about Mel's writing feels gritty and authentic and Tick Tock is a fantastic follow up to Hush Hush. I didn't know how she was going to top book one in the series, but she has. The book hits the ground running with murder in broad daylight and doesn't let up as Grace chases every lead. A gritty, authentic, fast-paced read that you won't want to put down.

4.5 ⭐️ I’m one of those readers who likes a start of a book to grab me I’m not one for a slow buildup, I need to have my interest piqued from the start. Author Mel Sherratt knows how to deliver an opening chapter, one that’s shocking, it triggers the reader’s interest, as well as promising an exciting and heart thumping read. Tick Tock by Mel Sherratt is the second book in the DS Grace Allendale crime series, and although it could be read as a stand-alone there are references to the first book in the series Hush Hush , so personally I would read them in order.
Grace and her team are called in to investigate the murder of a teenage girl murdered whilst on a cross-country run with her school. Was it a random attack? or was she specifically targeted? When the body count rises it really is a case of Tick Tock the clock’s ticking as the team are in a race against time to find the person responsible. Grace is one of those characters you can’t help but warm to, like any good detective she’s relentless in her quest to solve the crimes, but she’s also very aware of the victims family and friends distress and shows great empathy, as each death reminds her of her own loss. Her relationship with journalist Simon causes some conflict between the pair, but you can’t help hoping they are able to work through their problems.
When I read a crime book, I’ve come to expect graphic crime scenes, I don’t necessarily want them, but more often that not they are there. What I really liked about Tick Tock is the fact the author doesn’t include graphic crimes to sensationalise her story, she concentrates more on the “after”. For me this made the read far more authentic, you sense the devastation and horror family and friends feel, their outpouring of grief, anger and disbelief, which give this novel a far grittier touch than any crime scene can convey. As you would expect like any good crime thriller, there are many red herrings and surprises to lead you astray on the path to the truth.
The last quarter of the book really picks up the pace as Grace and her team move closer to finding the killer, and OMG I never seen that one coming! I found Tick Tock to be a gritty, authentic, heart thumping read, Mel Sherratt’s writing goes from strength to strength with each book she writes. Highly recommended to those who enjoy a fast-paced, authentic crime thriller.

Cho những ai tò mò, Đếm ngược là tập thứ hai trong series trinh thám ly kỳ DS Allendale, do nữ nhà văn Anh quốc Mel Sherrat sáng tác và được I Love Books Việt Nam chuyển ngữ. Truyện lấy bối cảnh thành phố Stoke-on-Trent, nơi được coi là địa điểm tồi tệ thứ mười ba nước Anh và là nơi đóng kén của hàng tá các băng đảng tội phạm lớn nhỏ. Đúng với tựa đề, nhân vật trung tâm của toàn bộ series là Grace Allendale – một Sỹ quan Điều tra mới nhậm chức, vừa đặt chân trở về quê nhà sau hơn hai chục năm ròng. Đồng hành với cô, người đọc sẽ có cơ hội đối diện với những vụ thảm án khủng khiếp, vén lên bức màn bí ẩn khiến không ít người phải lao đao, kinh sợ, đồng thời, cùng trải nghiệm cuộc săn đuổi nghẹt thở, dễ dàng làm thỏa mãn những người hâm mộ khó tính nhất.
Sau khi góp công lớn trong chiến dịch truy bắt tên sát nhân hàng loạt chuyên nhắm vào những người đàn ông khỏe mạnh, giải quyết mớ lùm xùm liên quan tới gia đình của người cha ruột đã nhiều năm không gặp, cũng như dần hòa nhập với môi trường và những người đồng nghiệp mới, tưởng như Grace Allendale sẽ có dịp tận hưởng một quãng thời gian yên bình, nhưng không, tính chất công việc tuyệt nhiên không để cô có lấy một giây hít thở. Vì đều cùng chung một series dài kỳ, nên khi đánh giá Đếm ngược, mình nghĩ là sẽ khách quan hơn khi đặt sách trong mối tương quan so sánh với tập truyện trước đó – Suỵt! Yên nào. Về điểm chung, thì cái dễ nhận thấy nhất có lẽ không gì khác là mạch truyện. Đếm ngược vẫn giữ được mạch truyện nhanh, dồn dập giống như ở tập một, với motif gây án là những vụ giết người bí ẩn cũng sự xuất hiện liên tiếp của hàng loạt những nạn nhân bất hạnh, khiến cho công cuộc điều tra của cảnh sát hay quá trình theo dõi diễn biến truyện của độc giả dần trở thành một cuộc chạy đua gấp rút. Một điểm chung không thể không nhắc tới nữa đó là việc xây dựng tuyến nhân vật và việc phát triển các mối quan hệ, tương tác giữa các nhân vật trong truyện. Ở tập truyện này, ta vẫn thấy rõ một Grace tài trí, dũng cảm, giàu trắc ẩn, vẫn thấy những người đồng sự nhiệt tình, năng nổ và khả năng làm việc nhóm không thể hiệu quả hơn. Mối quan hệ tình cảm giữa Grace và Simon – một nhà báo, phóng viên hiện trường, cũng ngày càng được đắp bồi và thậm chí còn bén rễ sang cả cô con gái – Teagan. Điều này khiến cho bức chân dung nhân vật ngày càng thêm “người”, thêm sinh động và chân thực. Chưa hết, lối kể chuyện của Mel Sherrat, vẫn giữ được nguyên phong độ – cực kỳ hấp dẫn và cuốn hút, kết hợp cùng cốt truyện đầy li kỳ sẽ khiến độc giả phải lật trang liên tục và không ngừng phỏng đoán về những chuyện sẽ tiếp tục xảy ra.
Song, không vì vậy mà lại có thể nói Đếm ngược hoàn toàn là một bản sao của cuốn truyện đầu tiên. Mặt khác, phần tiếp theo này còn chứa đựng rất nhiều những điểm khác biệt, dù là xét ở mặt tích cực hay tiêu cực. Điểm khác thứ nhất, đó là việc xây dựng chân dung nhân vật chính – Grace Allendale. Đọc Đếm ngược, nhiều khi có thể dễ dàng nhìn ra một Grace hoàn toàn khác, tồn tại song song cùng Grace với những phẩm chất cũ – một Grace rất dễ xúc động, một Grace vô cùng cảm tính và đôi khi cũng khá là… yếu đuối nữa. Mình không biết có phải là do nạn nhân của những vụ án trong tập thứ hai này hoàn toàn không giống với tập một (đều là những người phụ nữ), hay do Grace đã chính thức bắt đầu một mối quan hệ yêu đương mới, nên tính lý trí của một sỹ quan điều tra trong cô phần nào đã bị lấn át, bị tác động, đẩy cô tới một vài hành động tương đối… khó hiểu. May mắn là ở phần cuối, Sỹ-quan-Grace đã thực sự trở lại, dập tắt những hồ nghi trong lòng mình.
Điểm khác thứ hai, đó chính là động cơ gây án của hung thủ. Khác với Suỵt! Yên nào, hung thủ để tay nhúng chàm bởi hàng loạt lý do chồng chất, khiến trong lòng độc giả phần nào đó dấy lên nỗi cảm thông, trong khi đó, ở tập hai, kẻ thủ ác giết chóc chủ yếu vì tính thú của bản thân, vì những lý do không tài nào có thể chấp nhận được. Chính lý do này nên đã dẫn tới điểm khác thứ ba, đồng thời cũng là một điểm trừ tương đối đáng tiếc của Đếm ngược, đó chính là sự thiếu hụt chất hiện thực khi truyện không còn mảy may động chạm tới các vấn đề xã hội. Sát nhân của Đếm ngược thuần túy chỉ là một kẻ tâm thần bệnh hoạn, và cuộc đối đầu giữa cảnh sát và tội phạm cũng đơn giản chỉ là một cuộc săn đuổi mệt mỏi, chỉ đem tới những sự phấn khích cho độc giả nhất thời. Tất nhiên là mình không thể hoàn toàn trông chờ sẽ có một trải nghiệm đọc đầy chiều sâu suy ngẫm khi cầm trên tay một cuốn truyện trinh thám ly kỳ, song chắc có lẽ cũng bởi đã kỳ vọng hơi nhiều, nên thú thực bản thân mình cũng có đôi chút thất vọng.
Song dẫu vậy, tạm bỏ qua những điểm trừ nho nhỏ ở trên, thì nhìn chung Đếm ngược vẫn là một cuốn sách đáng để tìm tới. Với những ai đã từng nhấm nháp Suỵt! Yên nào có thể tiếp tục quất liền Đếm ngược cho máu lửa, hoặc nếu chưa từng đọc qua cuốn đầu thì cũng không quá là khó hiểu lắm đâu, tách bạch đâu ra đấy hết ý màaaaa. Đánh giá: 4/5 sao.

Một điểm chung không thể không nhắc tới nữa đó là việc xây dựng tuyến nhân vật và việc phát triển các mối quan hệ, tương tác giữa các nhân vật trong truyện. Ở tập truyện này, ta vẫn thấy rõ một Grace tài trí, dũng cảm, giàu trắc ẩn, vẫn thấy những người đồng sự nhiệt tình, năng nổ và khả năng làm việc nhóm không thể hiệu quả hơn. Mối quan hệ tình cảm giữa Grace và Simon – một nhà báo, phóng viên hiện trường, cũng ngày càng được đắp bồi và thậm chí còn bén rễ sang cả cô con gái – Teagan. Điều này khiến cho bức chân dung nhân vật ngày càng thêm “người”, thêm sinh động và chân thực. Chưa hết, lối kể chuyện của Mel Sherrat, vẫn giữ được nguyên phong độ – cực kỳ hấp dẫn và cuốn hút, kết hợp cùng cốt truyện đầy li kỳ sẽ khiến độc giả phải lật trang liên tục và không ngừng phỏng đoán về những chuyện sẽ tiếp tục xảy ra.
Song, không vì vậy mà lại có thể nói Đếm ngược hoàn toàn là một bản sao của cuốn truyện đầu tiên. Mặt khác, phần tiếp theo này còn chứa đựng rất nhiều những điểm khác biệt, dù là xét ở mặt tích cực hay tiêu cực. Điểm khác thứ nhất, đó là việc xây dựng chân dung nhân vật chính – Grace Allendale. Đọc Đếm ngược, nhiều khi có thể dễ dàng nhìn ra một Grace hoàn toàn khác, tồn tại song song cùng Grace với những phẩm chất cũ – một Grace rất dễ xúc động, một Grace vô cùng cảm tính và đôi khi cũng khá là… yếu đuối nữa. Mình không biết có phải là do nạn nhân của những vụ án trong tập thứ hai này hoàn toàn không giống với tập một (đều là những người phụ nữ), hay do Grace đã chính thức bắt đầu một mối quan hệ yêu đương mới, nên tính lý trí của một sỹ quan điều tra trong cô phần nào đã bị lấn át, bị tác động, đẩy cô tới một vài hành động tương đối… khó hiểu. May mắn là ở phần cuối, Sỹ-quan-Grace đã thực sự trở lại, dập tắt những hồ nghi trong lòng mình.
Điểm khác thứ hai, đó chính là động cơ gây án của hung thủ. Khác với Suỵt! Yên nào, hung thủ để tay nhúng chàm bởi hàng loạt lý do chồng chất, khiến trong lòng độc giả phần nào đó dấy lên nỗi cảm thông, trong khi đó, ở tập hai, kẻ thủ ác giết chóc chủ yếu vì tính thú của bản thân, vì những lý do không tài nào có thể chấp nhận được. Chính lý do này nên đã dẫn tới điểm khác thứ ba, đồng thời cũng là một điểm trừ tương đối đáng tiếc của Đếm ngược, đó chính là sự thiếu hụt chất hiện thực khi truyện không còn mảy may động chạm tới các vấn đề xã hội. Sát nhân của Đếm ngược thuần túy chỉ là một kẻ tâm thần bệnh hoạn, và cuộc đối đầu giữa cảnh sát và tội phạm cũng đơn giản chỉ là một cuộc săn đuổi mệt mỏi, chỉ đem tới những sự phấn khích cho độc giả nhất thời. Tất nhiên là mình không thể hoàn toàn trông chờ sẽ có một trải nghiệm đọc đầy chiều sâu suy ngẫm khi cầm trên tay một cuốn truyện trinh thám ly kỳ, song chắc có lẽ cũng bởi đã kỳ vọng hơi nhiều, nên thú thực bản thân mình cũng có đôi chút thất vọng.
Song dẫu vậy, tạm bỏ qua những điểm trừ nho nhỏ ở trên, thì nhìn chung Đếm ngược vẫn là một cuốn sách đáng để tìm tới. Với những ai đã từng nhấm nháp Suỵt! Yên nào có thể tiếp tục quất liền Đếm ngược cho máu lửa, hoặc nếu chưa từng đọc qua cuốn đầu thì cũng không quá là khó hiểu lắm đâu, tách bạch đâu ra đấy hết ý màaaaa. Đánh giá: 4/5 sao.

Tick Tock was everything it promised…raw, gritty, and undeniably electric. I’ve had this book on my TBR for a while now, regrettably it has taken me a while to get around to it, but I will be continuing with this series with haste. If you love strong independent female detectives that are served with humanistic flaws, then this is going to be right up your alley. A story with a chilling narrative, it made me look over my shoulder constantly whilst reading it.
Mel Sherratt, has an amazing skill at drawing you in, constantly whispering closer, closer. You keep edging closer even though you know it might mean your doom. Both her narrative and her characterisation is a double-edged sword. The author has the ability kill you off slowly with her emotional and nerve-wracking hard boiled crime stories. The prologue and the final chapter left my eyes blank and staring, I suffered the same disbelief and was left not quite knowing how to develop coherent thoughts, there was so much of the story that I just didn’t see coming.

This is the kind of book that originally got me interested in book blogging. It’s a story that captures you up and has you needing to shout about it from the rooftops. As far as crime fiction goes, Sherratt has slotted herself into the top table with some of the greats.
Okay, enough waffling, let me tell you a little about Tick Tock. A deadly serial killer. A dead girl during a cross country lesson. Grieving friends and family. Can DS Allendale solve the case before another target is killed? There’s enough action to have you lacing up your Nikes and running away from the imminent danger. Can you feel the tension yet?
The victims all fit the same mould. Blonde, loving families and have their entire lives ahead of them. No-one seems to have a bad word to say against any of them. So just why would someone target them like that? DS Allendale has had her fair share of trauma but its her strength and will of character that makes her so likeable, she’s undeniably human; she makes mistakes but her will to get the bad guy in jail is astounding.
There isn’t a passage in this book that is boring. Every little word is used to its greatest effect. It only takes a sentence to bring a world to life and that is what Sherratt uses to hypnotise her readers. I think I only turned three pages before I was a complete goner. So many questions and by the final page every single one of them was answered. No wasted motion and that’s what made Tick Tock so outstanding.

I can never get enough of Mel Sherratt's books. I just love how she reels you in and doesn't let you go.

Tiếp nối phần tiếp theo của cuốn Suỵt! Yên nào, Đếm ngược – tập truyện thứ hai trong bộ truyện trinh thám của nhà văn người Anh Quốc Mel Sherratt với nhân vật chính là Sỹ quan điều tra Grace Allendale, lấy bối cảnh tại khu phố Stoke-on-Trent, thành phố nổi tiếng là nơi tồi tệ thứ 13 tại Anh vào năm 2007 với đầy rẫy những tội phạm, tệ nạn và một loạt các hoạt động của thế giới ngầm. Stoke-on-Trent tuy đã chuyển biến tích cực nhưng nó vẫn là một vấn đề nhức nhối đối với cảnh sát.
Đếm ngược mở đầu với vụ tấn công xảy ra tại rìa một cánh đồng với nạn nhân xấu số là một phụ nữ tóc vàng bị bóp cổ. Tưởng chừng mọi chuyện đã được giải quyết êm xuôi khi tên sát nhân đã bị bỏ tù nhưng không, làm gì có chuyện một cuốn sách dài ngót nghét 400 trang lại dễ kết thúc thế. 5 năm sau vụ tấn công, hàng loạt những án mạng một lần nữa liên tiếp xảy ra. Dẫu nạn nhân là nữ sinh hay người mẹ trẻ đang nuôi con nhỏ và cảm tưởng họ chẳng có vẻ gì liên quan tới nhau thì cảnh sát một lần nữa phải đau đầu khi các vụ án có sự lặp lại, với cách thức gây án giống hệt 5 năm về trước. Một khuôn mẫu. Một kẻ sao chép táo tợn. Và cảnh sát dường như bị rơi vào bế tắc bởi họ chẳng thể tìm ra bất cứ mối liên kết nào giữa các nạn nhân.
Ấy là cho đến khi, con gái của nhà báo Simon – người mà sĩ quan nhân vật chính của chúng ta, Grace đang hẹn hò – bị cho vào tầm ngắm.
Tích tắc tích tắc đồng hồ quay vòng, tích tắc tích tắc. Thời gian của sĩ quan Grace và đồng đội ngày càng bị rút ngắn dần, trong khi kẻ giết người hàng loạt vẫn đang xổ lồng nghênh ngang ngoài kia.
Nếu để so sánh với phần tiền nhiệm Suỵt! Yên nào thì tớ thấy Đếm ngược kém hơn một tí tị tì ti, bởi cô sĩ quan yêu quý trong phần này hành động cảm tính hơn hẳn phần trước dẫn tới hàng loạt pha xử lí… khó hiểu của một sĩ quan cảnh sát chuyên nghiệp, say hi cảm tính, bái bai lý trí nha. Dẫu vậy, mạch truyện của Đếm ngược vẫn rất “bánh cuốn” người đọc vì tác giả Mel Sherrat chẳng mất công dông dài làm gì mà đâm thẳng luôn trọng tâm vấn đề vụ án. Quá trình điều tra được khai thác rõ ràng, từ bế tắc cho tới lúc từ từ từng mối liên hệ giữa các nạn nhân xuất hiện, ôi chao, tia sáng cuối đường hầm. Một điểm tớ cực kỳ thích trong những tác phẩm trinh thám. Với những ai nghía qua instagram thì hẳn đã trông thấy tớ đã thức tới gần 3h sáng để tranh thủ cày nốt Đếm ngược vì ẻm cuốn quá. Những tương tác giữa các nhân vật với nhau vô cùng tự nhiên, dù là giữa Grace và đồng đội hay Grace và anh chàng nhà báo kì cựu Simon. Thánh thần ơi, may thay tác giả đã không hề lồng vào cuốn sách này một mối tình lâm li bi đát chẳng liên quan mà thay vào đó, tình cảm giữa cô sĩ quan và anh nhà báo đúng là mối quan hệ tương trợ nhau, cả trong đời sống lẫn trong công việc ấy. Và thề luôn, ái chà chà những người đồng động của Grace, thực sự chuẩn đét cho định nghĩa teamwork trong mơ. Frankie, Sam và Perry thật sự hiện thân cho những người bạn và đồng đội tuyệt đỉnh.
Tuy nhiên điểm trừ cho tác phẩm này thứ nhất là nhân vật Grace, như tớ nói ở trên, nếu tập trước ngầu bao nhiêu thì tập này cổ cảm tính bấy nhiêu (nhưng bù lại cô sĩ quan vẫn khai thác triệt để được bộ não của mình vào tình huống khẩn cấp, ơn giời sĩ quan của tôi đây rồi!) Và thứ hai, ở cuốn Suỵt! Yên nào, tác giả đã tinh ý đan xen cả các vấn đề xã hội nhức nhối trong cuốn tiểu thuyết như ấu dâm, bạo hành gia đình, bạo hành trẻ em thì ở Đếm ngược, kẻ sát nhân thuần túy chỉ là… kẻ sát nhân thuần túy thôi, động cơ ra tay quen thuộc, chứ không đột phá bất ngờ như trong Suỵt! Yên nào (nên cứ phải quất Suỵt! Yên nào trước nhá các bạn ơi).
Nhìn chung nếu dẹp các điểm trừ nho nhỏ qua bên cạnh thì Đếm ngược vẫn là một cuốn sách ổn, thích hợp cho các bạn nào ưa trinh thám hành động đấu trí mà chọt vô thẳng vấn đề nhanh gọn lẹ như mình, VÀ MAY QUÁ KHÔNG CÓ MỐI TÌNH SẾN SẨM NÀO TRONG ĐÂY, CẢM ƠN TÁC GIẢ RẤT NHIỀU! Các nhân vật từ chính tới phụ đều được xây dựng và phát triển tốt. Tuy mang danh phần hai nhưng thực sự có thể đọc tách biệt được (nếu như bạn không quá ngại spoil, vì Đếm ngược có nêu ra chút chút nội dung của Suỵt! Yên nào nhé). Dịch cũng ổn luôn, tuy nhiên soi kĩ vẫn còn hai lỗi type nhớ. Quất đi nha các bạn tôi ơi.

Các nhân vật từ chính tới phụ đều được xây dựng và phát triển tốt. Tuy mang danh phần hai nhưng thực sự có thể đọc tách biệt được (nếu như bạn không quá ngại spoil, vì Đếm ngược có nêu ra chút chút nội dung của Suỵt! Yên nào nhé). Enjoyed the second book in the Grace Allendale series, though I think the first one was better.
There was more going on there, quite a bit of action.
Here, Grace is chasing up a murderer again.
It looks like there might be a serial killer out on the loose. It also looks like the killer might be rather too close to Grace. Or is it just a coincidence?
It's easy to follow, fast enough to keep you going, yet, I was loosing interest couple times here and there.
Hope, there'll be another one in the series.

In the first book in the series, Grace developed a friendship with Simon, a local reporter. It did not come easy, due to her past, but in this story, they draw closer together. Their growing relationship grew even more difficult when Simon's own daughter comes into the picture in connection to what is going on. Will Grace keep everyone safe? What of her family that she has recently come to know?
I loved the first book, but, boy, this one was truly a whopper! There were a lot of elements in this story and it was quite fast-paced, with characters that kept my attention and concluded with a stunning ending. Although this book could be read as a standalone, Grace's background, especially regarding her family, might be better understood and appreciated if these books were read in order.

“Ba người phụ nữ bị tấn công chỉ chưa đầy một tuần… Liệu thời gian đang chậm chạp trôi đi hay đồng hồ của cô đang đếm ngược?”
Đếm ngược là cuốn sách thứ 2 trong series Đặc vụ Grace Allendale, sau Suỵt! Yên nào. Và dù mình đã quen với văn phong, cùng cách xây dựng câu chuyện của Mel Sherrat từ Suỵt! Yên nào, thì Đếm ngược vẫn cứ tiếp tục dẫn mình đến với những bất ngờ, chỉ khác một chút là lần này mình thậm chí còn không đoán được kẻ sát nhân cho đến phút chót.
Ngay từ những trang đầu cuốn sách đã thu hút mình những bằng vụ án mà nạn nhân là những phụ nữ trẻ, liên tiếp xảy ra trong thời gian ngắn nhưng không có chút manh mối nào của kẻ sát nhân. Tiếp đó là sự vào cuộc của Grace, cùng những đồng đội tuyệt vời của cô. Trong vòng 2 tuần, họ đã liên tục làm việc với cường độ cao và áp lực cực kì lớn, rồi cuối cùng cũng tìm ra thủ phạm mà hẳn là sẽ khiến bạn bất ngờ.
Không thể nói chi tiết hơn về nội dung vì em này là trinh thám và mình chẳng muốn spoil các bạn chút nào. Nhưng có thể hé lộ một chút là twist cực đỉnh, và cách dẫn dắt của tác giả thật sự khiến mình không thể nào dừng đọc, cứ muốn lật tiếp đọc tiếp để đi đến tận cùng mới thôi ấy.

Và điều này, lại một lần nữa khiến mình bất ngờ với Mel Sherrat và ngòi bút của cô, đã không ít lần mình phải dừng lại, đặt ra câu hỏi cho chính mình về ý nghĩa của sự sống, cái chết. Những khắc họa tâm lý nhân vật, cùng việc đào sâu vào những góc tăm tối của con người, mà có đôi khi chính chúng ta cũng không nhận ra, thêm một lần nữa đưa mình vào mớ cảm xúc khá hỗn loạn, có ngỡ ngàng, có xúc động, có đau lòng, có cả nghi ngờ và cũng có niềm vui lẫn tự hào. Vì sao lại là niềm vui? Vì dù có nhiều khiếm khuyết hay góc khuất, thậm chí là những điều chúng ta cho là không hoàn hảo và không thể chấp nhận nơi mình, vẫn còn đó những người bạn và gia đình - những người thật sự quan tâm, lo lắng và yêu thương mình đang ở đó. Điều quan trọng là chúng ta có mở lòng, để “nhìn thấy” và chấp nhận họ hay không. Và dĩ nhiên điều này ảnh hưởng rất nhiều, vì nó có thể khiến bạn bước vào con đường tăm tối hay dũng cảm đi tìm ánh sáng.
Lần này mình đã chú ý nhiều hơn đến tên sách, và khi khép lại trang cuối cùng phải thốt lên “trời ơi tên sách hợp với nội dung quá”. Và sau khi đọc em này mình đã hiểu hơn vì sao nhiều bạn nghiền trinh thám đến vậy rồi.
Đếm ngược là cuốn sách thứ 2 trong series Đặc vụ Grace Allendale, sau Suỵt! Yên nào. Và dù mình đã quen với văn phong, cùng cách xây dựng câu chuyện của Mel Sherrat từ Suỵt! Yên nào, thì Đếm ngược vẫn cứ tiếp tục dẫn mình đến với những bất ngờ, chỉ khác một chút là lần này mình thậm chí còn không đoán được kẻ sát nhân cho đến phút chót.
Ngay từ những trang đầu cuốn sách đã thu hút mình những bằng vụ án mà nạn nhân là những phụ nữ trẻ, liên tiếp xảy ra trong thời gian ngắn nhưng không có chút manh mối nào của kẻ sát nhân. Tiếp đó là sự vào cuộc của Grace, cùng những đồng đội tuyệt vời của cô. Trong vòng 2 tuần, họ đã liên tục làm việc với cường độ cao và áp lực cực kì lớn, rồi cuối cùng cũng tìm ra thủ phạm mà hẳn là sẽ khiến bạn bất ngờ.
Không thể nói chi tiết hơn về nội dung vì em này là trinh thám và mình chẳng muốn spoil các bạn chút nào. Nhưng có thể hé lộ một chút là twist cực đỉnh, và cách dẫn dắt của tác giả thật sự khiến mình không thể nào dừng đọc, cứ muốn lật tiếp đọc tiếp để đi đến tận cùng mới thôi ấy.

The start to Tick Tock had me gripped from the off. The murder is a very risky one and I was desperate to know the who’s and why’s.
You really get the sense of urgency with this case. I also love how we get to see how this particular case affects Grace. It’s always something I’ve wondered how someone in the police force copes with dealing with murders. Especially when it’s someone who has their whole future ahead of them. There is a very sympathetic side to Grace even though on the outside she tries to be business as usual.
It was good to see a bit more of the relationship between her and Simon, who is a reporter. Not the most ideal person for someone in the police force to have a relationship with. As much as I enjoy the relationship between the pair, you just know that they are going to be in for a rocky ride.
Tick Tock makes for a tense and gripping read. You’ve got to love a serial killer thriller and this one made for at times a disturbing read. There were certainly some surprises in store that had me like ‘OH’ with my jaw dropping and having to remember to close it again. There are thrills and chills a plenty, right up to the very last page.

I hadn't read "Hush Hush" Mel Sherratt's previous book, so I went in blind to the DS Grace Allendale series with her second book "Tick Tock".

She’s discovered strangled and dumped in a local park. DS Grace Allendale and her team are brought in to investigate, but with a bold killer, no leads and nothing to connect the victims, the case seems hopeless. It’s only when a third woman is targeted that a sinister pattern emerges. A dangerous mind is behind these attacks, and Grace realises that the clock is ticking…... Can they catch the killer before another young woman dies?"
I thought this book was a very decent police procedural, with very natural and easily likeable characters. It was a pleasant change to read about police officers who weren't superhuman and never seem to sleep but are normal, everyday people with genuine feelings and emotions towards the victims of crime. Grace was a particularly interesting character with a background from the first book that sounds very intriguing. Although I was a little lost at all the family members mentioned in her previous case, there was enough to follow and understand at how she came to be working in Stoke on major crimes however, I do believe I would have benefited from reading the first book.
The author has written a heartfelt story too, that paid a lot of focus on the victim's families left behind, with the grief very palpable during the initial chapters from the murdered girl's mother. I did feel a little too much detail was given to the death of Matt, Grace's husband and her constant recollections of her grief but all in all I did enjoy the story as a whole and it kept me guessing till the end. The author also conveyed teenage angst, hormones and friendship excellently and was very true to life.
An exciting denouement concluded the book and the final chapter revealed a well thought out twist. Although not particularly tense or fast paced, this story does still move along at a steady pace, keeping your attention throughout and I would follow DS Grace Allendale in future books.

DS Grace Allendale was born in Stoke but moved away when she was a child. She returned to the Stoke area a few months ago after working in Manchester.
She’s still keen to earn her new colleague’s trust after her previous case which involved members of her estranged family.
A powerful story, it begins when a schoolgirl is murdered during a cross-country PE lesson at school. It gave me the creeps, every parent’s nightmare.
It’s close to Grace too, as the girl was a school friend of her boyfriend Simon’s daughter.
Another woman is found dead a couple of days later, but is there a link to the first case?
Grace and her team battle to find a link, and when they do I was totally not expecting it!
There are lots of twists and turns in the plot, lots of suspicions, making it a real page-turner.
Very gritty scenes, and so well described.
It can be read as a stand-alone, but for more understanding of Grace and her Stoke family I would recommend reading Hush Hush first.
Being a Stokie myself, Mel Sherratt’s books really hit home with me more than any other author. The story criss-crosses my city, passing by the end of my street and in a nearby park. It seriously creeps me out, even when I’m driving around I think about the author’s books. I just know where it’s all happening even if some of the place names are slightly different. I even put faces to the local newshounds!

Khoảng thời gian tháng 11 với tớ luôn là lúc thích hợp nhất để đọc những cuốn trinh thám này, hồi hộp bí ẩn này, kinh dị này, trước khi không khí lễ hội của tháng 12 kéo tới. Hoà cùng những đợt gió mùa, những cuốn sách lôi cuốn (như thế này) sẽ làm buổi tối của chúng ta thú vị hơn hẳn đó.
Tiếp nối sự hấp dẫn của phần 1, câu truyện trong cuốn phần 2 này cũng không hề kém phần hồi hộp và vẫn gây nhiều pha thót tim cho Chi 🤣 Tuy là phần 2 nhưng cả 2 cuốn này tớ thấy đều có thể đọc riêng được, chỉ là nếu đọc qua phần 1 rồi, chúng ta sẽ hiểu rõ hơn về nhân vật Grace thôi.
Vẫn theo phong cách chuỗi án mạng, nhưng tớ thích twist của cuốn này hơn phần 1 nhiều, vì lần này tác giả đem tới kha khá bất ngờ cho chúng ta đó anh em. Tớ thích việc tác giả giữ cho người đọc phải liên tục đoán, vì twist liên tục được bung ra nên chúng ta sẽ có rất nhiều manh mối để lần tìm đó. Đấy cũng là điểm nổi bật của phần 1 mà Chi ưng ý đó. Tớ cũng thích cách tác giả móc nối các nhân vật với nhau, vừa có một chút hơi rợn gáy, cũng vừa đủ để tạo một sự căng thẳng khiến adrenaline giữ Chi tỉnh táo suốt câu truyện.
Chung lại thì đây là một em đáng thử, anh em nào đã đọc tập 1 rồi thì hãy sang tập 2 thôi, còn chưa đọc tập 1 thì cực nên thử ạ 🥳🥳🥳

Once again, I would like to thank for Avon and NetGalley for Tick Tock the second book in the DS Grace Allendale series. I had read the first in the series, so I was excited to receive a copy of this.
Teenager Lauren Ansell is found strangled whilst out on a cross country run during school hours the killer left no clues. A few days later a young mother of twins is found dumped like rubbish in a similar fashion. Grace and her team are struggling to find the killer. When the third victim is found unconscious in a critical condition. Grace and her team work flat out, to find the connection between the three victims and find the killer before he or she strikes again.
The team interview kids from Lauren Ansell’s school to the teachers. When they find a connection that there is a copycat killer of a person that Grace put behind bars a few years previously.
This is another gripping, unputdownable thriller from Mel Sheratt. It has a great storyline and believable characters. A bit different from Hush Hush but I still enjoyed it. I hope though in the next instalment the Steels are back on the scene.

A young girl murdered in a very public and risky place. DS Grace Allendale and team are called in to investigate as another victim is targeted but who is choosing them and why. The clock is ticking and lives are at stake. In between all of that Allendale is trying to work on her relationship, Simon is a journalist which puts them both at odds with each trying to do their job as best they can.
This is book two of a series with kick backs to the first book however you can read this as a standalone to be fair. The investigation side the police have another victim and need to work out if it is related to their earlier killing, do they have a serial killer? We then have the personal aspect with Grace and Simon, their blooming relationship, how it effects their jobs and the personal strains they face. It gives Grace a much more human character, seeing a raw and emotive side gives her a more relatable side the reader can warm to. Trying to connect with Simon's teen daughter who wants nothing to do with her, as dad's new girlfriend and her being a police officer.
There are scenes with teenagers which give a different feel in the book and different strands and stories lines to keep the reader engaged. Lots of pace, action and threads where we don't know what is coming next, the how or why and plenty of times I thought I knew where it was going! Sherratt keeps you on your toes and I can't wait to see where book three is going to take us! 4/5 for me this time.

DS Grace Allendale is back with another grim case as a young girl is murdered in broad daylight,two days later a young mother on her way home from work is murdered.Why have they been killed no one knows but the team have job on their hands to solve it as they have no witnesses or clues.When a third victim is found by Grace still alive the race is on to get these cases solved.I won't spoil it for others so i can highly recommed this book.Well done to Mel Sherratt well worth 5*

This one started off strong and soon had me hooked.

There are a good cast of characters, I particularly liked Grace, she's a multi dimensional character, I liked how strong she was but there was a more human, vulnerable side to her too.
I did like how the book played out but I just felt it fell a bit short at the end, like it felt a bit rushed to wrap everything up and that the conclusion of the case could have been a lot stronger.
This is the 2nd book in the Grace Allendale series, this can be read as a standalone but I definitely think you would benefit from reading the first book before this one as there are mentions of past incidents and I did find some of those parts confusing when you have no frame of reference.
I'll definitely check out more from this author in the future and would be interested in reading the first book in this series

Grace Allandale is back in Stoke working the case of a young girl who has been strangled. Trying to work with a new team and find her feet in her new relationship. There’s plenty to keep her busy. As the number of bodies increase can Grace catch the killer before someone close to her is in danger?

After reading book one in this new series I was keen to move straight on so I can catch up. I absolutely loved the first book and had all the basics of our main characters. What I would say is that if you haven’t read book one and plan on doing so maybe don’t continue on with this review as it will inevitably contain spoilers.
So Grace is settling down in her role as DS back in her the town she grew up in. Sadly for her and the team the discovery of a young girl dead jsut outside school grounds is the start of a new case. I particularly like that her colleagues are now very accepting of Grace and we get to see a little more of them as they work the case. Before long a second woman is found dead and the team are desperately trying to see if there are any connections. Her relationship with reporter Simon is most definitely tested both professionally and personally and I loved seeing more of this element of Grace as it gives you insight into her a lot more with this book. After the drama of book 1, I wondered how much we would see of her estranged Family, and although we get fleeting glances it was nothing too heavy. I was kind of grateful for that because book one was so full on and this way there is room for a lot more happening there in future books.
I read this in two sittings and loved it just as much as the first. I made myself read a different genre after this just to give myself a break but the next book will most definitely be book 3 in this series and I can’t wait. A fabulous read which I loved!

I loved Hush Hush, Grace Allendale’s first outing as she returns to her home town of Stoke. So I was waiting with bated breath to be back with Grace to see what happens next!
I hated cross country at school (I was a straggler) and that chapter at the beginning gave me the heebie jeebies. Our cross country route was a lonely place through a wooded area behind school, so easy for a psycho-killer to pick one of us off just like that. Goosebumps totally ensued as I read the opening!!
As the story unfolded, I couldn’t settle on a suspect, I jumped from one to another as the chapters went by. And yet again, Grace’s estranged family are there on the periphery, like a thorn in Grace’s side. Turning up when she least expects it and giving her unwanted attention.
One character I have to mention is the school head. Nathan Stiller reminded me of my son’s first head. Good looking and far too young to be a head teacher and I could not get that image for the man out my head!

I really enjoyed reading 'Tick Tock' which had me turning the pages until the end. Everything one expects of a good thriller and one that i can recommend. I hope to read the first book in this series soon.

Động cơ giết người trong vụ này thật sự rất... Đúng là hành vi của kẻ điên chứ không người bình thường nào có thể cư xử như vậy. Thật tội nghiệp cho những nạn nhân của chúng.

you will not be disappointed with this book . this is the 2nd book in the series and as good as 1st book this author has done it so well not going to spoil it for you but its brilliant and the twist and turns so good so cant wait for book 3 this author is very talented so love her books if you want a good read then look no further
