From the publisher description, The Sister Verse and the Talons of Ruin by Amelie C Langlois should have been everything I look for in a book. However, for reasons that are a little hard to place, I did not love this book.

The story starts with a police detective who seems pretty washed up and is having an epically bad day at the office. Early on it is clear he is living in a world a lot like ours, but which definitely isn’t out. The early chapters read almost like a dream sequence, skipping fro

A whirlwind of a ride that must be read to be experienced, for no words of mine could do it any justice
Definitely looking forward to the next installment

I’m torn between giving a rating of 3 and 4.
This book is unlike anything I’ve read, and as a jaded reader of the horror genre, that is worth something.
How did the writer conjure up such scenes? All I want to do is take a peek into the writer’s mind.

It is such a pity that the writing technique is unsatisfactory in this one. The sentences are way too long, and the writer uses the same conjunctions over and over again. I don’t understand why this wasn’t flagged out during the editing. Hasn’t anyb

I wanted to like it more than I did

I was intrigued by this one. The concept promised a lot, and it started strong with what I assumed would be a slow burn as we’re introduced to a police detective in a dystopian future, trying to solve some mysterious murders. Things take some interesting turns, and it’s soon clear to the reader that the perpetrator or perpetrators are something other than human.

What happens is something along the line of Lovecraftian splatterpunk, or noir cyperpunk splatterpunk

First I'd like to say it wasn't the gore or anything like that that lowered my rating, as I actually thought that was handled really well (which probably doesn't bode well for my mental health, but I digress). For a book this long, it was really hard to follow with all the jumping around, back and forth from character to character, scene to scene. It started to mellow out after a while, but then it picked back up again, and it was jarring at times, making me have to go back and reread to figure ...more

What in the actual...?

This book defies genre. It switches between sci-fi, cosmic horror, action, and a few others, and does so quite well. Very gory, but that’s fine. (I kinda got tired of seeing everything happen “in a spatter of blood” every five minutes, though. Other descriptors, maybe? Clearly this author is quite capable.) All in all, the story was quite good, quite messed up, but could’ve been truncated quite a bit. I’m glad to see that the sequels are a fraction of the length each. This
