Bombshell

Rate this book
My brain exploded at the supermarket. One minute I was arguing with my three-month-old about how many grapes she could stick in her tiny mouth and the next minute I was staring at the face of the father of my child.

The guy ghosted me after I told him I was pregnant. I sent him texts, called him and even posted a certified letter but received zero response. While he was down for the baby-making activities, he had zero desire to accept the consequences.

So I did what any other like-minded woman would’ve done in my position. I reached into my cart and started hurling things at him.

To my surprise, he not only paid for the damage but followed me home. Now, he’s telling me he never got my messages or my letter and that he’s ready to be a father.

He’s patching drywall, doing the laundry, and carrying the trash to the curb, and I’m remembering what it was like when he was loving me every night. A few heated stares and a few brushes of his hand against mine and my long-dormant female parts are roaring to life. Everyone’s going to think I’m a few French fries short of a Happy Meal if I let him back into my life, but my heart can’t keep asking what if…

Not bad but not great. A lot of people will love it as it’s a quick, safe, second chance (kinda) romance with a strong heroine. However....I just can’t get past the lack of basic medical or baby knowledge. At 3 months PP the heroine would no longer have stitches or be worried about tearing them after a c-section. I’ve had two c sections and the staples last no longer than 7-10 days. On my second c section after the staples were removed the incision opens back up which resulted in more stitches ...but guess what....those only lasted a week! At the 3 month point those stitches would be grown over and would have had to been removed via minor surgery. Next, at 3 months, the baby would NOT be eating fruit or vegetables of any kind! The child MAY be just starting in cereal or oatmeal - I likely though as that typically doesn’t start till 5-6 months.
Sometimes it’s like authors forget basic knowledge when writing book AND it completely takes the enjoyment away....

description Apart from the Einsteinish three-month-old baby, the complete lack of medical knowledge, holes in the plot you could drive three semi trucks side by side through, and the abrupt ending with no epilogue, this book was cute!

Oh my! This was soo good! Novellas have to work really hard to get my attention and that’s exactly what this one did. There was a little bit of suspended belief but I didn’t care one tiny speck. When the hero’s heart got involved, I absolutely swooned! Okay, not really, but I totally fell into love with him. This was so different than your usual novellas and yet it felt completely developed and oh so sweet. And did I mention that it starts off in the most hilarious of ways? It does. And that just set me up for a great read!

What does one do if they bump into the love of their life who abandoned them when they found out you were pregnant? You kick their ass in the middle of the supermarket that’s what!

Bombshell was an awesome novella with laugh out loud references to Harry Potter, raunchy sex scenes and a hero that certainly redeems himself.

If you need a well written short story, Jen Frederick outdid herself with this one. This would have easily been a 5 star book had it been longer!

The GOOD:
Good romance & romance development between 28yo illustrator h who accidentally sees her missing BF of 10 months 35yo lawyer H again in a grocery store while she's with their 3month-old baby & pelts him with her groceries. She's hurt & upset at how he just suddenly left 1 day after a whirlwind romance from the 1st day they met at his quarry job & lived together since until he left 1 day & she later gets a check with a note re: H not wanting to see her or their baby.

Liked how H groveled to genuinely show his remorse for leaving her & their baby for 10 months due to the amnesia he suffered from a hit on the head which caused him to forget knowing h but he had continued heart problems from feeling like something was majorly missing in his life which led him back to the town h lived in. That's sigh-worthy right there. Loved H's OTT alpha-dominant & possessive-obssession over h & his angst from hurting h from his amnesia & how sold out on h he was since 1st meeting her. Liked h's funny snarkiness that wasn't overdone. Good pacing/overall writing/S chem/hot S.

MEH or the BAD:
Wish we had more details of how they met & immediately started living together from that day on. It would've added to the emotion & character development of H&h.

Sexual History:
h had lovers before H but had never experienced orgasm during sex before until H. No info on H's dating/sexual history. Only that he was obsessed with h & constantly smexxed her. Seems like both had been celibate during their time apart: h coz she was preggo & had her baby & H coz of his amnesia & heart problems.

So far, my favorite from the Read Me Romance podcast. I loved how the Hero handled seeing the heroine again with the baby. The reason he ghosted her is not what you think. Definitely worth the read!

I wasn’t sure what I was going to think of this book but I was so looking forward to it. I had a few things that I didn’t like as in the baby was meant to be three months but was very advanced for its age range but besides that it was a hot quick novella.

Kate has been getting on with her life as a single mother ever since Jack vanished from her life so suddenly and refused to acknowledge Anna’s existence. Hurt and angry she has made the best of things with the help of her best friend and doing some grocery shopping the last person she was expecting to see was Jack and he is claiming to have amnesia and not to know her or ever knowing about Anna. Can she believe him and will he want her and Anna or try to take her beloved daughter away from her?

Jack lost a huge chunk of his life and nothing has felt right since that day, something in his heart has been missing and the last place he was expecting to find the missing link was the grocery store but standing in front of him is his past and his future now all he as to do is convince Kate that he didn’t leave her and that what he is telling her is true.

I am not a fan of audio books so this book was new to me and I do enjoy Jen Frederick’s writing style. Great quick read

I really love the secret baby trope and was excited to see Jen Fredrick being featured on the Read Me Romance podcast, but I was floored by the writing in this book. And not in a good way.

The first thing that bothered me was the age of the baby (3 months) and it’s cognitive and motor skills did not match at all! Who has heard of a 3 month old eating fruits, recognizing words, or showing signs of “concern” for the mother when she’s upset? It’s like the baby was being written as a 9 month old. I don’t even have kids and I knew this baby was superhuman with the way it was written. That and the recovery time from her c-section was off. The stitches would be gone by then. It’s basic research. Lazy writing.

Then she behaves like an absolute mad woman, wrecking a grocery store because she sees her ex! The produce section is described as looking like a tornado went through it, and it’s all because our main girl couldn’t cope with the sight of her baby daddy. Don’t get me wrong, being abandoned while you are pregnant is horrible, but to react that way and destroy a store with no thought to the owners or the people who would have to clean that up is insane.

That’s all in the first chapter. The rest of the story was ok once you abandon your realistic expectations. So disappointed because I love her Gridiron series!

I listed to this on the Read Me Romance podcast. Which I love! Great concept. Thanks Tessa Bailey and Alexa Riley for doing it!!!

Anyway, this was funny. So short. Pretty cute. Not much substance. The baby must be a super baby as she can do things no 3 month old can do. For a novella it still lacked a bit more substance. But I enjoyed listening.

Bombshell was a short read by Jen Fredrick. It’s storyline was around a single mother who recently gave birth to a daughter and was prepared to raise her alone after the father walked out and ghosted them upon learning of the pregnancy. Fredrick took us through the surprise reunion and the many secrets that led to that point.

I liked the premise of the story and I liked the characters; however, the book was too short to develop appropriately. There were so many questions left unanswered and I craved more. My hope was that Fredrick will use this as a prequel to create a full length novel for Jack and Kate while filling in the gaps and giving us a glimpse into the future.

When I read the blurb, I was like how can a three month old baby eat fruits?
We don’t even give water to babies till they are six months here. And here she is talking about fruits. When things are so unrealistic it takes out the mood to read the book.

Pass.

I thought I would end up disliking this book... but I actually ended up liking it.

What’s it about?
So basically this woman had a baby and after months of the guy being away, the supposed father came back to town so she’s pissed but begins to fall for him again.

Pros:
The story is surprisingly interesting and well written. Reading that description I just gave I probably would have been like “Oh fuck no, I ain’t interested” but I was surprised by it, it actually works.
This book is not as predictable as most of the Read Me Romance podcast books (don’t get me wrong I still have mostly enjoyed the podcast but had previous complaints about the predictability of these books). I was surprised by some stuff in the plot.
This book is actually kinda funny, the humor makes this a lot better than if it wasn’t humorous I think.
The romance! It is so well written and cute.
This book can often be very sexy! I thought I would leave completely un-turned on (hell maybe even turned off) but I thought wrong.
The narrator does a very good job.

Cons:
I didn’t really care about the characters. Typical male romance character, meh female romance character, don’t give a shit about babies. Maybe if they replaced baby with dog I’d care more (okay there’s no maybe there).
So the baby stuff still slightly annoyed me. People who don’t like kids are also stereotyped as assholes too (which maybe it’s just because I’m one of those people but nobody is telling you that you can’t have a kid, who fucking cares? I mean the character I’m thinking of is a stupid cunt in the first place because he can’t stand kids but dated a woman with a baby, maybe I missed something but for real, maybe it’s just that whole part).

Overall:
This book is surprisingly good. Sure I may have had a couple of issues but it’s pretty good overall.
A well written story, cute romance,
sometimes sexy, often funny, not too predictable. This is a definite win!
Definitely one to read if you like romance (or if you wanna try it because it’s free to listen to the podcast that has the audiobook, I mean seriously). I recommend it!
(Though still gonna say in case the author reads this, definitely would have been even better if baby was replaced with puppy).

3.5 'My way back to you' Stars!

During these holidays, since I don't have much time, it's always great to read short stories. I really enjoyed Bombshell by Jen Frederick. I do believe she is a new author to me (though I know many people who love her books) and I really liked her writing style, her characters and the chemistry between them. Cute second-chance little story to read whenever you are in the mood for a quick, sweet and sexy treat!

All wrongs get righted, true love, sex and sexual tension, all neatly wrapped up in about 60 pages. A bite-sized snickerdoodle* cookie -- not the best of its kind, not enough to fully satisfy, but still enjoyable.

*No offense to snickerdoodle fans, but every time I see one I think, "Another sugar cookie ruined."

A baby, amnesia, a strong female lead, and a focused and determined male lead – should equal a recipe for something really, really good, but whilst this was a not bad read, it was really short. Unlike some novellas for me this one felt far too short and I wanted more depth and layering to events and the main character’s relationship. I also had some issues with the lack of medical and baby knowledge in the book – it had me double checking what I knew, and yeah, the info in the book was not correct.

Okay first of all, there's over the top and then there's OVER THE TOP!

The heroine's baby daddy disappears from her life and returns after ten months claiming that he suffered from amnesia. He then moves in with her (whom he doesn't even recognise!) and the baby, and proceeds to tell her that his heart wasn't working properly these last months because she wasn't near him. Yeah, right!

Ugh, I hate books that take their readers to be bloody idiots !

I could go on and on about the idiocy of the book. It was a struggle not to DNF this book, and I succeeded only because it was a novella.

Spoilers ahead

This was a very short story of a mom who thought the father of her child had abandoned her only to run into him at the grocery.(love that scene) it's a bit OTT with the amnesia and off course it felt rushed as it was so short but it was a pretty ok read. Considering the H had heart pain during the separation I'm assuming he wasn't with anyone else, h was pregnant and only recently had her baby so she was celibate as well. I liked it well enough though I'd have liked it to be longer.

This felt...unfinished, and not well thought-out. Exactly how old is Anna supposed to be? Kate says three months initially, but in the first scene Kate's worried about her c-section stitches opening up--which is not a concern past the first few weeks at the most, which would make her a newborn. Newborns don't grab at grapes in the supermarket, though, and if she's that young, then why was Kate putting together her baby swing nine months ago (when she ripped her pants)? Did Dobby the dog ever make an actual appearance on the page besides his grocery store mention in the first day's episode? (I'm pretty sure the answer is no.) And what the heck coffee shop has a chandelier hanging in it just waiting to fall on unsuspecting patrons' heads???

Actually, very little about Jack makes any sense. Why was he an impoverished antisocial slacker when Kate was with him the first time (though if he was that bad, what was she doing with him?) but a suit-wearing, fancy credit card-carrying guy whom cops defer to now (less than a year later, maybe?) His explanation for the falling out with his family is pretty thin. (Speaking of his family--did they know about Kate or not? Kate's sure they do, but Mr. I-have-amnesia says they don't, but we never actually see them, plus: AMNESIA) And why on earth is Jack so fast to jump on the whole "our daughter" and "I know...I got you pregnant" train with no real proof? Wouldn't a rich dude with amnesia be a teensy bit more suspicious about something like this being (literally) thrown at him out of the blue while on a trip to the grocery store? And back to Anna's age--jack's accident was supposed to be 10 months earlier, which if Anna *is* 3 months old, would have been two months into Kate's pregnancy...did it really take her that long to figure out she was pregnant? It's not outside the realm of possibility, I guess...but then a month later she'd be taking time out of her desperate search for Jack to put together the baby swing months before she'll need it?

Maybe the ebook will be more polished? And make more sense? I mean, it was kinda cute at parts, but I really couldn't get past the inconsistencies.

I listened to the adiobook available on the READ ME ROMANCE podcast, and i really enjoyed it.
I always prefer reading on my kindle or if it's possible on the physical book because i'm more focused and I can understand the story better.
i went with this without knowing how was going to be and Alexa Ryley and Tessa Bailey were hilarious on the podcast.
Back to the story, it's the first time reading this author and with this I will definitely check her out.

Ok, so like many other reviewers, I was distracted by some of the details in this book. I actually re-listened to parts of each episode to figure things out.

The description mentions a 3 month old and I heard the narrator mention that as well. But she goes on to say "...Pluck three grapes from my daughter's fingers which she somehow managed to snag when I wasn't looking." I'm not exactly what 3 month old can reach into a bag of grapes from her car-seat and manage to pull 3 of them off, but maybe I'm being too critical. Nowhere did the narrator indicate she was EATING them, so that makes me feel a little better about the whole age confusion. But it goes on to say, "...pushes May's hands away and points to something on the shelf." Sorry, but no. My daughter is 8 months old and isn't pointing as a form of communication to me yet. Also, babies don't eat puree until roughly 4-6 months. We are given the impression that the baby is eating avocado and broccoli purees. "He tosses Anna about two feet in the air." Nope - you definitely don't do that with a 3 month old. Sorry, but no.

Aside from the grape fiasco, the whole thing about the staples in her belly had me confused all over again. This led me to believe this was only days after she was discharged from the hospital. "I cover my sore belly, the C-section scar aches... My words are cut off when I feel the stitches break." I mean. I've never had a c-section but I can't imagine it is THIS sore 3 months later. I mean they even mentioned her staples, so I just was SO lost.

Jack's story has left me confused as well. I still don't understand if his family knew about the pregnancy or not. And I find it so hard to believe he would just jump into this without any kind of paternity test and just move right in without even talking to her about it. How is he a lawyer when he came off as a broke bum before? How long did they even know each other before she was knocked up? I feel like his vagueness just ruins this. It's all too confusing. Then he goes on about his heart issue on top of his amnesia. And who the hell is the guy (Clay) who told Kate to take a hike when she tried to find Jack and let him know about the pregnancy? I just listened to that part again and finally now I know this guy is just Jack's brother's assistant. I guess I'm still lost tho. Who the hell is Leka Moore? And WHY would an assistant do all this? Why wouldn't they demand an explanation from him?! Too many questions and not enough answers. The more I try to sort through my feelings on this, the more annoyed I'm getting! Ugh. I need to stop and just move on...

Now for the good stuff. The narrator was great, the sex was hot, and surprisingly despite all of my negative comments, this was probably my favorite book on the RMR podcast to date! It started off hilarious - the opening scene was a riot. The angst was great and this novella was far less cheesy than the others, but still had some corny dialog at times. Originally I thought this would be my first 4-star rating for the RMR novellas. Sadly, the unanswered questions land it at a 3. I definitely think this book would be much better if written as a full length novel. I feel like it NEEDS it. I think the actual plot of this book has been the most intriguing of all the novellas so far, but the execution and attention to detail need some work.

I’m glad I only paid $.99 but still not happy. First time I was really disappointed. Contains spoilers after this part...The synopsis said the baby is a 3 year old. Then in the book it’s a 3 month old. I was so confused as I read. Not sure I read it correctly as the baby was 3 months because the h acts like the baby was older. Then she talked about her C-section hurt and thought she pulled a stitch and she passed out. If the baby is 3 months old at least the stitches should be out by now...Oh. And don’t get me started on the H for losing his memory. Amnesias from a chandelier falling on him.... I’m shacking my head right now. Sorry I’m ranting but I’m so surprised cause I love this author
