About the author

Dr. Sigismund Freud (later changed to Sigmund) was a neurologist and the founder of psychoanalysis, who created an entirely new approach to the understanding of the human personality. He is regarded as one of the most influential—and controversial—minds of the 20th century.

In 1873, Freud began to study medicine at the University of Vienna. After graduating, he worked at the Vienna General Hospital. He collaborated with Josef Breuer in treating hysteria by the recall of painful experiences under hypnosis. In 1885, Freud went to Paris as a student of the neurologist Jean Charcot. On his return to Vienna the following year, Freud set up in private practice, specialising in nervous and brain disorders. The same year he married Martha Bernays, with whom he had six children.

Freud developed the theory that humans have an unconscious in which sexual and aggressive impulses are in perpetual conflict for supremacy with the defences against them. In 1897, he began an intensive analysis of himself. In 1900, his major work 'The Interpretation of Dreams' was published in which Freud analysed dreams in terms of unconscious desires and experiences.

In 1902, Freud was appointed Professor of Neuropathology at the University of Vienna, a post he held until 1938. Although the medical establishment disagreed with many of his theories, a group of pupils and followers began to gather around Freud. In 1910, the International Psychoanalytic Association was founded with Carl Jung, a close associate of Freud's, as the president. Jung later broke with Freud and developed his own theories.

After World War One, Freud spent less time in clinical observation and concentrated on the application of his theories to history, art, literature and anthropology. In 1923, he published 'The Ego and the Id', which suggested a new structural model of the mind, divided into the 'id, the 'ego' and the 'superego'.

In 1933, the Nazis publicly burnt a number of Freud's books. In 1938, shortly after the Nazis annexed Austria, Freud left Vienna for London with his wife and daughter Anna.

Freud had been diagnosed with cancer of the jaw in 1923, and underwent more than 30 operations. He died of cancer on 23 September 1939.

Son zamanlarda okumakta en çok zorlandığım ve beni yoran bir kitap oldu, çünkü baskısı iğrenç! Kolay kolay iğrenç demem kitaplara ya da baskılarına ama bu öyle. İmla hatası olmayan tek bir sayfa bile yok ve her sayfada bir kaç hata var. Büyük olması gereken harflerin çoğu küçük, kelimeler eksik ya da yanlış harflerle yazılmış ya da hiç boşluk konmamış (yedi kelimenin boşluksuz yan yana yazılmasından bahsediyorum, saydığım en büyük sayı bu idi) ve benzeri hatalar.. Kitabı okumamı ve içine girmemi zorlaştırdı, zaten kitabın orijinal adı ve çevirmen bilgisi verilmemiş bu da ayrı bir sorun.

Yayınevinden kaynaklanan sorunları bir kenara bıakırsak, Freud otobiyografisini kaleme almış ve başından geçenleri anlaşılır bir dille ve düzgün cümlelerle bir araya getirmiş. Onu tanımak ve yaptığı işlerin işleyişini kendi ağzından öğrenmek ilgilenenler için oldukça çekici olacaktır.

Yason Yayınevi'nden bir daha hiçbir kitap okumak istemiyorum ancak bu kitapla birlikte bir kaç kitap daha almışım yayınevinden ve gerçekten pişmanım, sizlere de almamanızı öneririm.

Psikoloji ve Freud hakkında bilgisi olmayan herhangi bir insana önermeyeceğim bir kitap açıkçası. Bu kitap bir bibliyoterapi kitabı değil ya da okuyunca direkt anlayabileceğiniz psikoloji üzerine kurgu dışı bir kitap da değil. Freud’un kendi çalışmalarını anlattığı, oldukça bilgi içerikli ve bir noktada okunması zor bir kitap bu. Öyle meraktan ya da keyfi okunabilecek bir metin değil. Ayrıca bu basımında ben herhangi bir yazım hatası göremedim, çevirisi de başarılıydı bana göre, daha önce okuduğum birkaç incelemeye istinaden bunu da eklemek istedim.

A book like what I hoped for and what I found.

I started to read Freud's extensive research on the subconscious, but the book was entirely about Freud's autobiography and the process of the emergence of psychoanalysis. Although there are words dedicated to the subconscious from time to time, there are Freud narratives in the book in general. In this sense, this book may mislead you.

The reason why Freud's autobiography is found in this book, in more accurate words, there is no research and detailed analysis of the subconscious content, I think, is because he leaned on the concept of the unconscious, which he took from Janet and integrated into psychoanalysis, and often used this concept. Freud, who likens consciousness to an iceberg, sees the subconscious, which he defines as the invisible part of the iceberg, as a more clinical area. Therefore, it is understandable that he advances his theory by focusing on consciousness and the unconscious field while creating it. Therefore, Freud will not be able to give you what you want about the subconscious. This book also contains the message of this. If anyone wants to read this book, which has a historical value, I say don't give up anyway. Have a pleasant reading.

Sigmund Freud, bu kitapta kendi yaşamından ve çalışmalarından bahsetmiştir. Otobiyografi niteliği taşıyan bu kitap Freud gibi önemli bir psikanalistin hayatına ışık tutması nedeniyle önemli olsa da benim okuduğum Yason yayınları haziran 2021 baskısı (çeviri: Ahmet Necip Yılmaz) dil açısından oldukça akması zor ve çevirisi beni tatmin etmeyen bir kitaptı. Okurken sıkça belki anadilinde okusam bu kadar can çekişmezdim diye düşündüm. 2.5/5 vermek isterdim ama mümkün olamdığı için 3/5'e yuvarladım.
