Even though the story has become less fun now, I enjoyed the battle of patience between two experienced snipers.

4.4/5.

I liked the sniper battle between Ogata and the russian, plus Ogata’s history with his brother. But i’m just waiting for Sugimoto and Asirpa to reunite tbh😭

Not surprisingly, this one opens like the last closed with an adrenaline rush of violence. I love the way Satoru Noda sensei punctuates the abrupt violence with an almost placid sniper duel. Not many shots are fired, but the ones that are fired count. It’s more Liam Neeson in The Grey with the slow stalking attrition than Liam Neeson in Taken with the bullets and elbows flying. Against that we have more pasts revealed in flashback. And, yes, Ogata is the psychopath we thought he was. We get the most cultural and history lessons in this one since the early volumes, so it does break up the narrative flow. Still, the art, the adventure, and the anticipation for the next explosive volume, keep me championing Golden Kamuy as the best serial manga at bookstores today.

THIS WAS AMAZING!!!

Snipers stand off, Ogata's backstory (more of what we had learnt before), Sugimoto and Tanigaki vs cold, vkusno and pelmeni and lighthouse, the future epic prison break, Shiraishi going back and more and more.
also Sugimoto pissed on Koito. Very important and plot relevant.

Ogata’s Tragic Backstory Part 2: Electric Boogaloo!! I’m always a weird mix of sad and terrified when his story is revealed. Goes to show neglect can really mess a person up for the rest of their life. I sometimes wonder how many walls he has built up in his mind and if he’ll ever let himself experience his emotions.

I really like the way all the different paths weave together, the little details that unite it all. I feel like I learn a lot about narrative structure while I’m reading this, alongside the fun historical elements, and on top of that this action story that’s also full of levity! It’s a really wonderfully composed series. The wintery scenes were also super cool to look at in this volume, the density of snow is hard to capture in art but it came across so well.

HELLO AGAIN MR. UNDERCUT!! I will give five stars to every volume with Ogata on the cover. And if in the end Ogata becomes despicable character....well...even now he is not actually kind character but look at everyone...

Talking about undercut, according to wikipedia undercut hairstyle was pretty famous back then among the poor and here I thought it was neo-nazi haircut in the west. Pardon me, I am only reader from developing country that doesn't have covid vaccines to fully protect every residents nearly seven times over.

Anyway, Ogata, Ogata, Ogata, what is his motivation, really, is he really a lynx that has no loyalty like everyone in this gorish manga.

Another good volume with more backstory on Kiroranke and Ogata! Ogata’s character keeps getting more intriguing—there’s clearly so much happening beneath the surface, and I like seeing his complexity unfold. The sniper battle was also well done.

I also appreciated seeing Shiraishi stay true to his promise to Sugimoto by protecting Asirpa. That loyalty really stands out, and as usual, there were plenty of moments that made me laugh out loud in this volume. This series is so delightfully unhinged! We’re heading into another side quest, and I’m really hoping it adds something meaningful to the main storyline as things progress.

The blending of the Russian, Japanese, and Indigenous cultures and histories is so fucking good - and on top of that, the character work has gotten to such a powerful but subtle height. The characterization Ogata gets in this volume (as you might expect given he's on the cover) is one of the most powerful pieces of work Noda has done in the series thus far, adding incredible depth to a cruel and hollow man and letting the reader in without trying relying on melodrama to try and make him sympathetic or likeable. It's a masterclass.

The tension between Vasily and Ogata is enough to make me come. THIS VOLUME SLAPS.

Especially that we get to see something about Ogata's backstory again. His empty eyes, empty smiles, and his empty straightened back. I can still remember his face when Yuusaku mentioned thei father on the hill. Damn. This wildcat sure is messed. And adding his brother's words echoing into him.

Looking forward to more!

We're in kind of a dark patch in the story. There's still some terrific moments and I'm learning so much, but the deeper they go into Russia, the more I miss Hokkaido and the heart of the story. Maybe the big betrayal from a few volumes ago is still affecting me. This is still a really good volume.

Is it crazy to say that I think Ogata is one of the best, most interesting manga characters ever conceived of? He is so fascinating, so well-written, so multi-faceted, I love to watch Noda explore his psyche.
