I love this book so much. Every bit of it. Even the thank yous at the end. This is a beautiful book about love. So glad to have met Mallko & his family through this book. ...more

This graphic memoir was a beautiful tribute to Gusti's son, Mallko, who was born with Down syndrome. The beautiful artwork and photographs help to capture the chaos that is the life of a family trying to navigate the world while caring for a child with downs, and its is simplicity reflects the message that Gusti tries to convey that all that he needed to give Mallko was love.

While Gusti's acceptance of Mallko came slowly, his wife and firstborn son's ability to unconditionally love Mallko h

This stunning multimedia book chronicles artist Gusti's understanding and acceptance of his son Mallko, who has Down Syndrome. Includes art, poetry, photographs and musings in various formats. Not sure how many kids I'll be able to hook with this one, but I'm glad it exists in the world.

This was a big window into a world that I have no experience with. Mallko was born with Down Syndrome. Dad wasn't ready for it. A quick read for parents of all types, for future parents, and for those of us who can develop more empathy.

This autobiographical picture book takes a raw and impassioned look at fatherhood and unconditional love. It is the story of the author and his son who was born with Down Syndrome. Mallko was not what his father was expecting, and Gusti did not accept his son at first. Steadily though, he quickly realized that Mallko was complete and fine as he was. Mallko’s mother and older brother accepted him much faster, showing Gusti the way forward. The book explores Mallko, his humor and his life. His art ...more

This book is so sweet and amazingly beautiful. I am so pleased this book was translated to English. You can understand this book just by the pictures but having the poetry, scribbles, and stories translated make you feel more connected with the boy and his father. I love how parts were left in Spanish making you understand the love the father has for his son. This little boy is so cute and adorable you would never think he had down syndrome. Everything the boy did was just like a normal little b ...more

A beautiful coming to terms with Down syndrome memoir. I was initially concerned because I'm a librarian and we have this in the children's area and in the first few pages Dad declares "I DID NOT ACCEPT HIM." This is followed by a scrapbook of Dad getting to know him, coming to love him and basically falling for his funny, sweet, busy guy. In the end, he says ""Accepting" is willingly and gladly receiving what we've been offered." A charming and heartwarming book.

This beautiful book was certainly not easy to read, which offers some idea of how hard it must have been to write. But oh, what insight it offers into the heart and soul of a man, the book's creator, artist Gusti, and his slow coming to terms with his son, Mallko, who has Down syndrome. My heart was broken as this father describes his unhappiness about his son's disability and his initial inability to accept this fact or love his son as he is. Eventually, though, he is able to do so, led by the ...more

This is the most charming of charming books. Written in graphic memoir form with some of the brightest, most colorful, wildly fun illustrations that combine father and son, Gusti writes about his experience raising his son Mallko who was born with Down syndrome.

The book is honest, humorous, and heartfelt. It's a quick read, but take your time anyway because the illustrations are packed on some pages and there's lots of great detail to see. The book has been translated from spanish and includes

Sweet graphic-novel memoir of the relationship between a little boy with Down Syndrome and his father, who at first is unhappy about how his son has not fulfilled expectations.

In an era when many people with Down Syndrome aren't allowed to live until birth, I especially loved the illustrations of Mallko being like other children--climbing into bed with Mom and Dad only to kick them all night long; peeing in the bathtub; pretending to be an animal.

Beautiful! Only four stars because some of the words were hard to read because of the font choices.

Brutalmente tierno y honesto.

mixed media GN about a father accepting his son who has downs syndrome. Very good, physically hard to read at points (there's a lot on every page, in several languages).
