The Reluctant Assassin #2

The Sorcerous Spy

When a rogue assassin starts taking heads in the Hundred Halls, no one is safe, not even the teachers.

Zayn leads his team as they investigate the gruesome deaths. The search draws them to dangerous places: the infamous Black Council and the opulent casino of pain run by the Diamond Court. As leads dry up, and heads roll, leaving them no closer to the truth, Zayn must make a terrible choice involving the people who he cares about most.

Q:
"It feels like Varna is a black hole to the world. There's no mention anywhere, not even tangentially. It's almost like you can't write about it."
"We're the Fight Club of magic," (c)
Q:
"It's hard to argue with the logic of illogic. Let's go see if we can get ourselves killed before the world turns to hell." (c)

The MCs are shady enough to be braindead:
Q:
Zayn had to hop over a vendor with a blanket full of "magic rings" to get past a particularly resistant knot of teenage girls.
When Alex glanced back, looking directly at Zayn, he knew he'd been spotted, but not how. There was no way that he could have known that he was following, because their encounter had been purely by chance. (c)
No shit, Bondie. No ideas as to how you might have possibly been spotted? None, whatsoever, you poor thing? Like, 'that crowd-jumping maniak running after me might possibly be following me'?

In this the second book in The Reluctant Assassin Series we once again catch up with Zayn, Keelan and the team in The Hundred Halls Academy. This time the team embark on a massive and thrilling adventure together with a team of their professors including their own patron into the bastille. A researcher had found out about the biological nature behind the access to magic and Priyanka Sai feared that what could be understood could be manipulated and destroyed and a virus had been created to kill magic at its source. This of course could not be allowed to happen as so many people in the hundred halls and elsewhere might lose their lives so they went in search of the word of annihilation and they were all tested beyond belief especially Keelan. The love the cousins have for one another really shines through in this book when they give up their lives for one another on numerous occasions. The loyalty of the team and their ability to work together is getting really strong now, so much so that they are entrusted with this most difficult mission by their own patron of assassins hall. This was yet another brilliant book in The Hundred Halls Universe which is made even more interesting through the chapters which give us an insight into the Varna background which Zayn and Keelan come from and the problem at the back of their minds on how to rid their town of the lady’s grasp and hold over each one of them!! A big well done Thomas Carpenter, looking forward to the next book in series!

As with all of the Hundred Halls books I just loved this.

Following Zayn along on his adventures and never knowing what trouble he'll get into while trying to do right by everyone and figure out a way to save his family and home town.

If you're looking for a fantasy, magical, adventure then jump right on in. But you might want to read in order as you'll get the most satisfaction this way.
