About the author
Michael Grant
177 books163 followersMichael Grant was an English classisist, numismatist, and author of numerous popular books on ancient history. His 1956 translation of Tacitus’s Annals of Imperial Rome remains a standard of the work. He once described himself as "one of the very few freelances in the field of ancient history: a rare phenomenon". As a popularizer, his hallmarks were his prolific output and his unwillingness to oversimplify or talk down to his readership.

A book listing all the names of classical mythology and trying to decipher where those names come from and what they could mean. It's really no more and no less than that, a philological exercise in ancient Greek.
It's interspersed, here and there, with a dry sense of humor, and whenever I came across it, it was so unexpected that I laughed for about 3 minutes. I suspect there may be more of it, but I knew only about 60% of the names and myths referenced, so a lot of it mat have been lost on me.
Given the authors assume their readers are familiar with all of the myths and know ancient Greek, I mostly felt left out. It's more of a geek book, and I'd recommend it to avid fans of Greek mythology and/or linguists.

An excellent reference for Greek and Roman mythology. Very dense and difficult to read. It's not quite as sassy as The Meridian Handbook, and contains less parentage information. It also lumps more entries together. Instead of having separate entries for two characters in the same story, it simply says to see one of the characters. It is not as well organized as The Meridian Handbook. Good certamen resource, and the genealogical trees in the back are nice.
