Behind her came a click - a single boot heel coming down on the wooden floor.
Jack Ampong has always had an ambition to be a writer but life got in the way.

Most recently, his wife was assaulted and he was with a prostitute during the time - in short, his marriage is crumbling.

Meanwhile, Jack's fictional world is taking on a life of its own.

The Mandrakar people have incredibly short lives but pass along memories across generations. One of them married a normal human woman

As a note, a copy of this novel was sent to me by the author in exchange for an honest review. This does not effect my opinions in any way. You can find this review here on Booked J.

I'm not certain on if I am leaving this at 3.5 or 4 star, so I wouldn't be surprised if I update this again in a few days to a 4. My feelings for The Childless Ones were complex in a positive way. If you're on the hunt for something new, something that will make you feel, Cam Rhys Lay h

When I finished reading The Childless Ones, I couldn’t believe it was a debut novel. It was such a creative and vivid story, that really shows off Cam Rhys Lay’s talent.

What I found most fascinating about this book was the two very different worlds, and how well they worked separately and together. We have the real world and the fantasy world, both vividly described with compelling characters.

I think The Childless Ones is a book you need to experience foryourself. It’s unlike anything I’ve ever

In this novel of intermixing stories of reality and fantasy, Jack is our guy. He is the man whose life we follow in the reality version along with his wife’s (soon-to-be-ex) life. We see both struggling in their different relationships, while also steadily overcoming their respective pasts. As for the fantasy side of the novel, we meet a variety of characters, almost as a short-story anthology, all connected at the end. We go on various journeys with different races, different magic, different p ...more

In his debut novel The Childless Ones, author Cam Lay excellently interweaves separate stories from two very different worlds; real world of aspiring author Jack Ampong and a historical fantasy realm that the later created in his writing, into a marvelous tale of intriguing characters and vividly drawn settings.

The readers are introduced to Jack’s world at the time when his first marriage is at the brink of falling apart. With a swelling aptitude for prostitutes and his inability to concentrate

The Childless Ones by Cam Rhys Lay is truly hit. I picked this one up not truly realizing the world I would be sucked into. This is the authors first novel and I truly believe it contends with the top novels in its genre. The book is two stories entwined into one. It truly is crazy that one person could come up with a world and book so intricate.

I really loved the character Sarah. I really don't know why but I really was drawn to her story and the entire time I wanted more from her. Serafina was

The childless ones is a short story with mixed fiction and fantasy within two worlds of a storyline. It begins with Jack’s wife being assaulted while he is busy with a prostitute, displaying their relationship problems, later on getting a divorce and marrying someone else. They too have problems struggling with infertility and things are simply not going as good. The sudden revelation shakes him. The reader is then introduced to jack and his world of writing where it is Empire based with creatur ...more

I received a copy of this book for a fair and honest review. When I finally got this book in the mail I was so excited. The concept of the book was just something new to me. I really enjoy the mix of the two worlds. It was amazing how the author kept the two side up in the air. The characters where fun, bold and kept me wanted to read more. This is one of the surprise debut novel of the year. I don't want to tell too much about this book for it is one that everyone should experience for themselv ...more

Thank you goodreads for sending me a copy of this book. 3.5 stars for me but I rounded up because the author is so talented. You get two, two books in one and for me that is part of the downside. On one hand we have our author protagonist and his first and second wives. On the other hand we have the fantasy book he supposedly wrote. The two stories are very cleverly woven together along parallel lines. It seemed like two different sets of short stories to me. And I tend not to be that big a fan ...more

I do not think this was a bad book, it had a lot of amazing points and twists and turns. I did like the fact that you have a bit of fantasy and some of the real world. My only thing about this book was for ME it was very hard to follow along with but I just think it was me not the book or the writing. It is one of those novels that you have to have time to sit down and read all the way through or you will be completely lost. Would I recommend it? Yes I would, you just have to follow along comple ...more

A really different reading experience... Different story lines around characters separated in reality (one is fantasy genre) and one is current life. Each of the three story lines was well written and pulled you in -- the final segment was I felt an unusual closing. i've read lots of stories that had what appeared to be unrelated stories before that eventually tied together but this was I felt original, more real.
