The Detective

Rate this book
Not all accidents are murder… When a private detective is asked to review a fatality at a remote facility he expected nothing but an accident because that’s what the report said. The report was wrong. The facility was above the snow line and buried in a mountain so reaching it wasn’t easy. It had been designed that way. The facility’s harsh isolation ensured the research within it remained hidden from governments and corporate spies and it also stopped the research escaping. Human clones. They hadn’t told the detective about them. But to be fair, he hadn’t told them he wasn’t really a private detective. ˃˃˃Written in first person THE DETECTIVE is a stand alone techno thriller. Touching on the style of a noir detective novel this one is a stimulating read. So ion you like your thrillers with a touch of sci fi, download a sample or buy THE DETECTIVE today. Interview with the Author Q - Why should readers give this book a try? A - Because it’s fun. The protagonist is outwardly similar to a hard boiled PI but if you read between the lines he’s a bit of an idiot, mostly because he’s self centred. There are a few mysteries, some suspense, some action and hopefully enough food for the mind to get your imagination firing even when the book has been put down. Of course the ever important climax won’t disappoint. It’s gripping and it’s a thrill ride that will keep the book in your hand until the very last page. Q - So, what makes The Detective special? A - It’s different. The story is set in the current world with the only the variant being one isolated facility that produces human clones for research (in secret). The style is reminiscent of the hard boiled/ noir detective novels although it carries aspects of a technothriller novel. The Detective starts off slowly, takes time to establish the world and its characters before it cranks up the heat and gives you everything you expect from a fast paced thriller. Q - Is it planned to be part of a series? If I read one will I be stuck reading them all? A - It will be part of a series, but… I like reading books that complete a story arc by the final chapter and all my books will do the same. You will be able to pick this book up, read it and at the end walk away satisfied that the mystery has been solved and story arc completed. Q - Will there be more books featuring this protagonist? The antagonist maybe. The protagonist? Possibly. If people like him. If he comes back it will be in another PI thriller / clones thriller with similar claustrophobic elements to it. Thanks for reading, & I trust you enjoy.

This book had me completely hooked by day 2! It touches on a subject that we all wonder about, secret place where clones are being made. Not only is this book a mystery/ thriller but all of the characters had their own mystery as well. I really enjoyed getting to know the characters, especially “The Detective” as he had no idea what he was getting himself into when agreed to “sign a report” that turned into an investigation.
This is a great stand-alone book although it could be open to having a sequel. The author vividly describes everything and it’s easy to picture going around the facility and the people that are involved. There were a lot of things that I didn’t see coming and it kept you guessing until the end. You would think you’d have something figured out but it turned out completely wrong. There wasn’t even just one biggest twist in the book there were several. Right when you think it’s over and have it figured out another big twist occurs until the very last sentence. It is truly an enthralling book and definitely a book I could read again.

If you have a scientific love for details, The Detective by D.I. Hills is the thriller for you. A man, who has recently been released from prison, has conned the company he works for into believing that he is a Private Investigator. He’s sent to a facility where he quickly learns that clones are being made. Human clones. As the story progresses, our ‘detective’ is tasked with reviewing an accident report, but soon finds out he’s faced with more than he bargained for.
The Detective holds within its pages a descriptive world of suspense. Each page pulls you further into the world of clones, experiments, and a serious case of “Who done it?” Because the setting of the book is a secluded lab, scientific facts are important to the story-line and each one has a purpose. However, because of how important the facts are, there is a significant build up to the real action. When the ultimate climax hits, putting the book down became impossible. Every fact previously fed to the reader suddenly made perfect sense.
In conclusion, if you enjoy an exciting thriller with clones and a suspenseful build up, The Detective hits the mark. Right to the end, the reader finds themselves on the edge of their seat wondering what will happen next.

The Detective is a techno, mystery, thriller by author DI Hills, published in August of 2018. The exciting story follows the Detective, an ex-con who took a job to look into a mysterious death at a remote facility. When he arrives, he finds himself way out of his depth. With secret clones, a false report and a series of lies, the Detective quickly finds himself in danger.
This story builds up slowly, allowing you to get into the head of the Detective and other characters and build up the world, almost the same as the real world but for the hidden human cloning facility. The book begins with intrigue at the death of one of the clones as the detective, and the reader gets let into a world of secrets and things that don’t quite feel right. The mystery to the story was fascinating and kept me enthralled throughout the book. The Detective was a great character to read because he portrayed the hardened PI façade but is such a self-centered person, he is somewhat incapable. I found him a fun character to watch as the mysteries grew deeper. The book was packed with action and excitement. I greatly enjoyed reading this book and am looking forward to seeing more from this author. I would definitely recommend as a must read for those that love mystery thriller stories.

The Detective is a well-written, gritty, dark comedy of a book. It leads you in one direction, and then takes off in a completely different one the next page. Within human clones involved, that’s what I came to expect. The story itself is interesting, but not completely enthralling. I think the redeeming quality about this book is the inner thoughts and feelings of the main character, who solely goes by the name “The Detective.” Some of the twists were easy to see coming, while others were not, which made for a good story.

The author’s use of imagery is very well done and it was easy to imagine what it would be like in a top-secret human cloning facility. It’s well written and I found the Detective’s self-commentary especially enjoyable, but it was just a bit wordy at parts and there was a lack of character development for the male high-ranking big shots. If you’re looking for a book that answers every single question, has a happy story, or even a fulfilling one, this is not the book for you. If you like mysteries, thrillers, or if you watch a lot of action movies, I think you would really enjoy this book.
