Debbie Shore's Sewing Room Secrets: Machine Sewing: Top Tips and Techniques for Successful Sewing

Rate this book
Jam-packed with sewing essentials and techniques, Debbie Shore's latest unmissable book brings you 10 must-make machine sewing projects to build your confidence and repertoire.

In this, Debbie's new series, each book takes an aspect of sewing as its subject. The focus of this book is machine sewing, and with her characteristically friendly and easy-to-follow style Debbie delves deeper in detail than her previous books, bringing you 10 must-make projects and the confidence to sew them.

The book is packed with hints and tips for successful machine sewing and will walk you through every aspect of your sewing journey. The book begins with a section on Sewing Room a peek in Debbie's sewing room, a guide to all the tools and materials you might need, a labelled diagram of a sewing machine, and in-depth sections covering various types of wadding/batting and interfacing, fabrics and threads. The book contains a comprehensive trouble-shooting section to reassure and guide beginner sewists when they encounter problems, along with a glossary to debunk any unfamiliar terms.

The second section of the book, Sewing Room Techniques, covers the skills you need to know, including inserting zips and piping, using shirring elastic, free-motion embroidery and applique. Debbie's focus is on craft and home items, but she also includes some dressmaking and quilting tips for those looking to explore other areas. The book features 10 projects that build up in difficulty, incorporating the techniques you learn as you go. Begin with a simple heart pincushion before you move onto a piped pillow cover, a tablet case with zipped pocket, a drawstring bag with applique detail, a quilted sewing machine mat and a pin-tucked bolster pillow.

This is the ideal book for the beginner sewist looking for in-depth and helpful guidance, or for the more experienced sewist looking to brush up on their skills.

bought this in norfolk and it's very good. Debbie Shore's book starts off with beautiful pictures of her sewing room (as opposed to mine, which is the kitchen table) and a guide to which type of sewing machine would be useful to you and how to deal with what goes wrong with it, ie your stitches too tight and breaking cotton etc. Then it moves on to the necessary tools which go hand in hand with sewing, scissors, thimbles, bobbins, cottons, seam ripper (have just bought a new one so that will come in handy then), and moves on to fabrics. She also gives you information on the different types of stitches you can use on your machine and handy information on inserting zips. I liked the things you can make too, in fact I feel the need for a toaster cover coming on.....

This book includes basic sewing and quilting instructions, along with some specific project patterns at the end. I enjoyed reading this, and will consider getting a copy for my personal library, since the author provides detailed instructions on some of the techniques that I tend to forget and have to figure out again whenever I have time to quilt.

What Debbie Shore does with her fabulous new book Sewing Room Secrets is take the sewist back to basics.

If you are a novice stitcher this book is perfect for you, and if you have been sewing for what seems like an age then it is a brilliant guide to reminding you of some of the things you might have forgotten.

With ten projects included, Bags, Pillow covers, and a gorgeous Toaster cover, each project gives you the chance to use the techniques given and end up with a fabulous and professional looking usable item.

Debbie Shore also makes suggestions on how to organize your sewing space to make it more user friendly and practical.  Advice on what you need to start your sewing journey is included , a full guide on which sewing machine to buy and what the different parts are and what they do. and even what feet is best for your sewing project.

Tips and techniques are explained in a simple language that everyone understands. I love how Debbie doesn't bombard us with 'sewing speak' that some professionals use.

What I love about this book is that everything is covered. Zips, Applique and so much more. Even shirring is explained and demonstrated, this is something I have never done but do plan on having a go.

This book is brilliant. It is beautifully presented and the photography gives a visual guide that makes everything come to life in perfect fashion.
