Grandpa's Noises

Children love laughing about body noises. In Grandpa's Noises, a range of sounds and words coming from body and mouth are explained in a warm and funny intergenerational romp. Children look at life with open, honest eyes but sometimes it takes a bit of thinking and code-breaking to work out what's really going on. Fortunately, for this particular grandchild, while Grandpa's noises might be a mystery to many, he knows just what they mean! For example, "Eyenolessgofurawark" is obviously Grandpa-speak for "I know, let’s go for a walk". "Aaaahhh" means the cup of tea is just perfect, and "Pissphusshawertt" is that sinking sound Grandpa makes when he needs a rest in his chair. And once you know that "Eeeawoscreech!" is actually the sound of a misbehaving hearing aid, Grandpa becomes a lot less scary and even more lovable. Of course some sounds - like the "Fffffffft" that sometimes escapes Grandpa’s bottom, and Dad's - need no explanation!

This cleverly conceived and executed picture book by, Gareth St John Thomas, spotlights grandpa’s day through the cacophony of noises that he utters both verbally and physically; some involuntarily like his bottom burps and trilling hearing aid. Adults barely comprehend what’s going on but thanks to Colin Rowe’s warm and captivating illustrations, a treasure chest of exposition unfolds: shown through paintings on the wall, poppies on the side table and grandpa’s gorgeous ginger-stripped cat. Relatable and realistic with plenty to share and laugh along to, Grandpa’s Noises is highly recommended both in the family and in the classroom – the perfect exploration of sound: cause and effect!

I'm not sure who narrates this book of a grandfather who makes lots of noises; especially his bottom. It's humorous but not enough that I'd recommend it for storytime.

This is Grandpa's story about all the noises he makes every day as he goes about his daily activities.

This book really plays on the fascination kids go through with noises people make, including body noises. My 4-year-olds are going through that stage at the moment and they think it is the funniest thing ever.

Along with onomatopoeia usage, this book also includes a simile on each page (this is when two things are compared using 'like' or 'as'). The combination of the two poetry techniques work exceedingly well in this story to create relatable scenes in a way that young children would see the situation. The onomatopoeias are written in a slightly larger, bolder font (in varying colours and textures) which allows children to easily locate the "noise" words.

I would highly recommend this book for kindergarten aged children through to grade 2,
