Seraphine Thomas #10

Recovering the Siren

Rate this book
Two questions have been on everyone’s mind since Division Chief Seraphine Thomas went missing on her way home from NYC:
Who abducted her?
How do we get her back?
The answer to the first is layered, the repercussions of it no one can fully foresee. The second answer is probably a given considering how kickass Sera is. Though she can’t do it alone and the one who comes to help wasn’t who most would think.
Especially because it’s not a simple rescue. At. All.
Months have passed when she returns home, and only her training with the FBI and going undercover saves her from too much crashing down on her at once. Oh yeah, and she’s still dying. They don’t know how she’s still alive when her own body was eating itself to survive.
The road to recovery will be difficult, but she has help, and she does the best she can, especially when betrayal hits her hard from a place she hoped it wouldn’t.
Thankfully all that work she put into building a solid foundation for herself pays off because the paranormals of Chicago will need to pull together or everything they built could be lost.

Seraphine Thomas is a crime series filled with Chicago attitude and a strong heroine that pushes what most would think a female lead capable of, along with the heat being involved with several men brings while trying to figure out what she wants.

Review of the Seraphine Thomas Series by Erin Flynn (Books 1–18)
⭐️⭐️⭐️ (Overall)

I’ve officially read all 18 books in the Seraphine Thomas series - yes, all of them - so you don’t have to (but maybe you’ll want to). I’m a longtime fan of Erin Flynn’s writing. Her stories are creative, emotionally rich, and often addictive. There's always at least one character per series you end up rooting for, and her talent for immersive world-building is undeniable.

That said, my experience with this series has been a bit of a rollercoaster. Let’s break it down honestly - but respectfully.

🔥 The Positives:
Compelling Worldbuilding: The supernatural FBI + polyamorous twist is unlike most in the genre. Think Forever meets Castle with a Vampire Diaries vibe.

Long-Term Character Arcs: The series spans a wide timeline and shows dedication to character growth (even if not always in a direction I enjoyed).

Addictive Early Books: Books 1–7 had me hooked. They had humor, high-stakes emotional drama, and solid pacing. These earned a solid 3.5/5 stars from me.

😬 Mixed Feelings & Constructive Critique:
1. Tone and Authorial Voice
While the author’s writing style is generally engaging, I personally found some of the commentary in the closing author’s notes and certain narrative choices to feel more personal or opinionated than expected in fiction. I completely understand the need to address issues like piracy, but I believe there might be more neutral or inclusive ways to communicate those messages.

2. Relationship Complexity vs. Clarity
This isn’t a typical “Why Choose” or Reverse Harem setup. It’s a deeply layered polyandrous dynamic - messy, intricate, and sometimes emotionally chaotic. If you're looking for straightforward bonding arcs, be prepared: the relationship development gets incredibly convoluted. Personally, I found the shifting dynamics between mates, sirened partners, consorts, and friends-with-benefits confusing as the series progressed. A glossary or relationship map might be helpful in future installments.

3. Character Fatigue
By Book 18, I found myself struggling to connect with many of the characters - especially the main character, Sera. She starts off as a resilient, sharp, and likable FMC, but over time, her decisions and relationship management felt inconsistent or frustrating. The push-pull dynamic in her personal life, paired with very little progress in her supernatural education even 18 books in, made it difficult for me to continue rooting for her.

Many love interests were introduced with big emotional weight, only to fade into the background or disappear altogether. Some characters who were well-developed and emotionally resonant (like Dain or Tristan) seemed to get less closure or fair treatment than others who felt more peripheral. In contrast, some relationships dragged on without significant development or payoff.

4. Pacing & Structure
Books 8–18 dropped to a 2.5/5 rating for me. The pacing slowed, and more focus seemed to shift toward commentary and expanding the cast rather than continuing the central storyline. Political and social themes started to feel more prominent than the core plot, which I found distracting from the fictional narrative I was invested in.

🧍‍♀️Sera Thomas (FMC):
Early-series Sera was fantastic: witty, brave, emotionally complex, and vulnerable. I loved her journey through the early books. But as the series continued, her indecision, emotional volatility, and seeming lack of introspection made it harder to sympathize with her. She often reacted rather than reflected, and by Book 18, she felt less like a hero and more like a character stuck in loops.

💔 On the MMCs:
Too many to list fully, but here are some key points:

Tristan: Felt unfairly treated by both the narrative and Sera. He brought a lot to the story emotionally and deserved more.

Dain: A standout for me. Loyal, strong, and emotionally available. Frustratingly underappreciated by Sera.

Brian, Riley, Hagan/Reagan: Relationships with these characters didn’t feel satisfying or necessary by the end.

Noah, Axel, Eugene, Jason: Struggled to leave a lasting impression. Some started strong but faded, others never quite clicked.

Carter: Felt like his storyline was mishandled. A simple conversation would have solved a lot.

Ari, Virgil, Lucca, etc.: Either forgotten or sidelined. At 18 books in, I’m struggling to remember who’s still important and who isn’t.

⚠️ Final Thoughts:
This series started with a bang but has become increasingly complex - sometimes at the expense of clarity, pacing, and emotional payoff. I’d still recommend it to readers who enjoy dark paranormal romance with poly themes, complex emotions, and an ongoing world that spans dozens of characters.

But for me, the series may have reached its natural peak. I’m unsure whether I’ll continue with future books unless there’s a notable shift in focus and tone. Still, Erin Flynn’s creativity and dedication to her characters is commendable, and I hope future installments bring some much-needed resolution to long-standing arcs.

TL;DR:
Started strong with a bold and complex heroine in a unique supernatural world. Became bloated with characters and unresolved plot threads. A frustrating but ambitious series worth reading - if you have patience.

5 Poetry In Motion Stars

Recovering the Siren is the tenth book in the Seraphine Thomas series by Erin R. Flynn.

The King is dead! Long Live the Queen! Okay, so obviously Vlad was never much of a King. I'm sad, like those who know he was a better Master than many worse options, that he never recovered from being used by one of the Dorcus line. Maybe that's why he couldn't seem to trust any of the good that Sera was building for the supernatural humans? That since he didn't realize he was being manipulated in the past, he was always questioning whether Sera was manipulating him? I'm not sure. I simply know he continued to spiral throughout this series, and the ending of his long life only highlighted how far he had fallen.

I love this book. Besides the horrors that Sera faced at the beginning of the book. One, I'm glad we weren't carried through the disgusting details of it all, ONCE AGAIN. Two, it gave her all of this time to simply BE. We ironed out many intricacies of the Council, and her alliances, which was helping in building a better foundation for this story. But we also got to move forward on a rather groundbreaking idea Sera has been concocting for a while.

I hope the Alliance she is the genius behind will do loads of good for supernaturals. It's difficult not to imagine all of the bad people that will try to tale advantage, like those that basically broadcasted their corruption by leaving the convention. But I'm being naively hopeful that there will be much more good wrought by her selfless deeds.

I am concerned about the manipulations of the Shifter Council. Everything they've been trying to do with her consorts and dating life, along with the new and equally annoying Wolf Councilman's nefarious designs on his new position. But there's also the alluded to trouble in South America to look forward to in the future.

Bijan is such an enjoyable character. I do so love the way he speaks to Sera. I wish there was a true chance he could become a mate to her because he is entirely too delicious and swoonworthy to simply be an every now and then relationship. I know that Sera's suitors all speak to her rather lovingly, but his poetry of devotion was honestly leagues above. Maybe with only Brian being the only true mate candidate that brings that same level of swoon to the equation...

I enjoyed this series until this point. Unfortunately, I found this segment of the story arc to be boring. To such a point that I choose to jump to the last couple of chapters to see if I should even bother to continue reading. I found no reason to go back. (I had read around 70% of the book before I jumped.) I find that I am unlikely to read anything further in this series, let alone by this author. (As I have read about half this series through Kindle Unlimited and not "purchased" the books. I find the anti-piracy rant, however justified, to be rather insulting.)

I'm going to have stop reading these books although I finished this book I just find that sees is constantly being raped and it's just not for me anymore I just don't see the point of it constantly in the books yes fair enough she needs to go through trails and to grow stronger but I don't think this character is really growing stronger In previous books she has been whinny I enjoyed this series up until around book 6 and then it was just her going through traumas of rape all the time and whinning about everything else

I was waiting to see what happened to Sera after the disappearance from the last book and I felt they just blew over it. Yes, it was traumatic for her but why set it up like that if the book wasn't more about that. I also feel that she still felt like the world was on her shoulders after everyone kept the peace the four months she was abducted and she should have felt some relief she could take some stuff off of her plate. Too much sex stuff for me, really not as interesting as previous books.

Getting tedious

I am not sure how to write this review. I understand that Sera was kidnapped and all, but her recovery from that was instantaneous, yet she is still using her childhood as an excuse to be petty. I am not sure how many more books I can read if she doesn't have to grow up to. She expects everyone else to grow and change, yet she still uses the same excuses and doesn't change at all.

Another one bites the dust

This series keeps going and going. There are no reservations and everything is laid out for you. I’ve always enjoyed this series and I keep hoping there will be some miracle and sera will become fertile bc infertility is something I battle. But regardless, I love this series

Complexities

We are starting to see the relationships forming. I am on the fence with Brian and honestly I dont know why. I am mad that she is not handling Dain and that she is not being fair in her attentions.
The story is not to in depth with her abduction and the players involved. The vlad situation was a long time coming. Overall this is progressing nicely.

An emotional balancing act

I think I spent the first third of this book crying, at this point in the series, a quieter, calmer period was appreciated, even if for heartbreaking reasons. I love how you explain a female inner dialogue so well, and how other people so ‘our’ actions so differently to us. Keep writing please.

Struggled with this one

This one was a bit of a struggle for me. I opened it on Kindle straight after reading the 9th book, and it took me to the first chapter. So perhaps there were trigger warnings before, but it was quite upsetting to read. Nonetheless, it's still a great story and amazing writing

Absolutely AWESOME Again 😁

Sera finally came home, but still has some triggers from her captivity 😕. We lost Glad in the story cuz he just couldn't put Barnard behind him and he knew who had Sera, but didn't tell anyone 😢. Sera's getting better and taking over more than she wants to 😉. Thanks again Erin, I'm truly addicted to this series and enjoy it immensely 🤓.

I love the fight that Sera has in her. It truly showed the every day woman’s vulnerability not just an exaggerated form of it. I truly cannot wait for the book.

I TRULY LOVE THIS SERIES

It's so very rare for me to find a book let alone a series that makes me want to live in their world. I love Sera and all her many trials and triumphs and all the wonder of her world. I read every book like a junkie. I so can not wait for my next fix.

Hot, and sweet

I was worried there might be triggers, but it was handled to well for it to be a problem for most. Loose ends were tied, healing was accomplished, and love was proven. I've really enjoyed this entire series so far and can't wait to jump into the next one.

I feel like up to this point Sera has been this indestructible power house. But now she's been kidnapped and injured. The struggles she faces are real and I love that they're not glossed over but talked about.

convention

The convention idea was very interesting, though I wished for more drama.

I really hope that Apollo makes more of an appearance and Dubois pops back up.
Dubois was interesting and I think he and Sera would make an interesting combination.
