Quick Summary: A light bright buddies romp

My Review: Melowy, Vol. 1: The Test of Magic was created by Danielle Star, written by Cortney Powell, and illustrated by Ryan Jampole. It is a comic/graphic novel series that features a very special group Melowy friends.

About the Book: Far away, beyond the stars, a magical realm exists. In this harmonious place, a school exists. Its purpose is to educate and train Melowies. Each Melowy has her own special look, her own special skills, and her own special test. Alas, something is afoot. Everything is not as harmonious as it should be. By the volumes end, readers get a glimpse of what's to come.

My Final Say: What a wonderful new world! This delightful adventure, so akin to My Little Ponies, is the beginning of a series set to teach young readers about individuality, identity, friendship, and love. I saw elements from many familiar fantasy fiction stories that I know and adore. Still, I found this book to be enchanting. I think it will appeal to many younglings.

I received this book from Netgalley for an honest review.

Well… sadly I can’t be very positive about this book. I am very disappointed. It seemed like such a fun book and I was happy that it was a Read Now on Netgalley. I was looking forward to reading it, but now I wish I hadn’t. :(

For one this is volume 1, but it felt more like a volume 5 or 6 in a series to me. We jump right in the story, get a very short introduction on the characters and that is it. We hear them talk like they are best friends forever, we hear about other adventures. I just couldn’t click with any character because of this. It felt like I was peeking a day in the adventures of a group of very close friends.

Next up is the weirdness/was it really meant to be drawn like this? These girls are unicorns/pegasus. They dance/walk on two legs, but also move on four legs, or on 3 of them. They sit in chairs like humans do, but then in other parts of the story they are being very much horsey. In the end I was just laughing when they suddenly got up on two legs from walking/flying on 4 legs. I guess I have to go for a serious case of it is all magic, and let’s not ask any questions as to why these girls are walking around on four legs mostly, but then dance and do other things on two legs…
I guess the same could be said about clothes. Why are some of them wearing tops and others are just wearing skirts… And some are just wearing everything.

The test they had to do? It was frankly boring, and maybe I would have been more interested if I had a proper introduction to the characters. If I had the chance to actually get to know them more than just casual “these are their names and kingdoms”.

As for the art. I can see it has potential (well with the exception of how the unicorns/pegasus look they just look a bit like play-do creations), but sadly due to Netgalley stuff the art is also blurry/grainy.

And of course there is also a mean girl and a villain. No fantasy story or school story could be without one it seems.

So yeah, not for me, sadly. I was definitely hoping I would find a new series to enjoy, but this just isn’t it.

"Melowy Vol. 1: The Test of Magic" is a magical book about flying unicorns called Melowies! When these special unicorns turn fourteen, they go to school at a legendary castle called Destino, which is hidden in the clouds. How cool is that?

At Destino, the Melowies learn all about their special powers, which are like magic. But the best part is the adventure and friendship they find along the way! Electra, Selene, Kora, Maia, and Clio are the main characters, and each of them has their own unique path to follow.

I loved reading about the Melowies and their exciting journey at school. They have dreams and challenges, just like real kids, but with a magical twist! Plus, the illustrations are so beautiful and colorful, they really bring the story to life.

If you love unicorns, magic, and friendship, you'll absolutely adore "Melowy Vol. 1: The Test of Magic"! It's a magical adventure that will sweep you off your feet and into a world of wonder!

I enjoyed this book and think that younger kids will devour it. As I was reading it, I got Harry Potter and Divergent vibes from the story. It was a cute adventure graphic novel and I enjoyed reading and seeing how they faced their fears. I hope that in the books to come there will be some more back story as to why Cleo is the way she is and where she came from. I would recommend this book to my students.

Miss 7 pointed out that it seemed awfully similar to My Little Ponies. The positive messaging was a little bit too forced and meant the writing felt stilted.

Miss 7 and I like to explore different books and authors at the library, sometimes around particular topics or themes. We try to get different ones out every week or so; it's fun for both of us to have the variety and to look at a mix of new & favourite authors.

*thank you to Netgalley and Papercutz for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review*

3 stars.

This just screams My Little Pony. In fact it was a little too similar. But then girls and ponies are so so popular that this could easily be a big hit. There wasn't really anything original about it though but it was still enjoyable. The art work was quite good. Lovely colours.

One day the Melowys went down a tunnel and they got separated in the forest of fears. A magical voice told them that they would always be alone and they would never be good at their special talents. Cleo made a light, then the other Melowys made lights and they got out of the forest. The Melowys learnt that they can always believe in each other.

I requested this book initially based on the cover artwork- it's bright and pretty and it looked like it would be very appealing to my daughter (age 6). This is the first volume in a series about the Melowy- pegasus like beings that attend a special school to develop magic powers. I think this was a good first entry- it introduces you to the main characters and takes them through an initial adventure while setting up some plot seeds for the future volumes. My only criticism of this would be the obvious similarities to My Little Pony Friendship is Magic. The power of friendship is a big deal in this volume, and you can see some parallels between these characters and the ponies. Also, I was a bit disappointed in the glossing over of how the characters met and became friends. There's just a brief mention and a few drawings, but that's it. I wonder if maybe more information will come out in later volumes as a flashback? Either way, I think this was a very cute graphic novel that a lot of little girls will enjoy.

To begin, this story intrigued me as a fan of My Little Pony. Truth be told, this is literally a rip off of MLP. The characters look exactly like the MLP characters. Each Melowy has a "unique symbol" on their wings just like cutie marks on the buttocks. Oh, and the Present of Friendship!

This is still an entertaining comic if your child loves MLP. This is right up their alley.

I feel like this was such a choppy first comic. The author just rushes through the introduction of the characters and everything about the 'main character' was explained in like three pages. There was so much promise there and we just sailed on over. Drawing out the plot would have introduced the characters more and made us fall for them rather than just throwing us into their world.

I did enjoy each character's little trail they had to overcome so that was very intriguing. One day we will see more of this world and hopefully in show form.

This graphic novel feels like it wants to be My Little Pony. Not quite Equestria girls, but maybe a step below. Seven magical unicorns are at school for Melowy training and time has come to pass an important test. Five of the girls have become best friends, and two others not so much. One of the five friends doesn’t even understand how she can be at Melowy since she has no magical powers. She was left at the school as a baby, not send as a special envoy. This book both reads and looks like a cartoon movie from the 80’s. Think the Care Bear Movie, The Last Unicorn, Flight of the Dragon. All covered in bright and sparkly unicorn illustrations. While this is an okay read, and I know kids who will devour it, I think it would have made a better B side animated movie.
