I really enjoyed Chrishaunda Lee Perez's debut novel. We Come as Girls, We Leave as Women explores the driving forces behind the transition from adolescence to womanhood for several students at Madame Ellington's School (a fictionalized Miss Porter's School). There is so much to chew on in the pages, and it definitely took me back to my own late adolescence and the many challenges faced by girls on the precipice of womanhood. This is a real page Turner, I finished it in less than 5 days by reading during my commute. The story of girls exploring their developmental phase is very good. While I'm long past that stage it was interesting to see how life has changed for young women and I will definitely share with my younger cousin.
