The title is illustrative because the adventure at sea that this book chronicles is indeed one, which reflects the epic journey of Odysseus, with tropical storms, pirates, paradisiacal islands, mystical beliefs, palm readings, predictions, shattered sails, and a broken mast. Also, beneath it all is a relationship strained to the breaking point by this odyssey. In this case, the author, Rita Pomade, is an active participant with her husband on the same fragile vessel, but unlike long-suffering Pe ...more

I knew Seeker: A Sea Odyssey by Rita Pomade was going to be a compelling story before I even read the first word. First of all, I know nothing about sailing so I was curious and second, the notion of leaving a steady job to sail around the world is intriguing, something dreams are made of. To say that it would take courage is an understatement. So while I expected an exciting, romantic adventure, I found myself mesmerized as much by Rita’s inner journey as I did by her detailed guide to the art ...more

Written by Rita Pomade, Seeker: A Sea Odyssey spans a decade where a dream is formed, worked for and accomplished. Rita and her husband Bernard want to sail, to see the world, and to find a perfect place to live. Yet as the saying goes, even the best plans go awry.

The plans begins in Mexico and takes shape in Canada. They build their ship, Santa Rita, in Taiwan and sail, at times with Rita's sons, unhelpful crew members, or vacationing family and friends who have flown in to meet them. For long

My Review:

Rita Pomade’s memoir Seeker, takes us on a thrilling adventure from Taiwan to Hong Kong, Singapore, India, Israel, Italy and Spain, with so many stops (and long stays at different locales) along the way. I
Pomade shares her adventures (and misadventures) and gives us a first hand look at the people and cultures she met on her travels. For her, it was important to explore these places and learn as much as she could a

The Review

Many people often talk of adventure but rarely do we ever get to see it unfold as it does in this amazing memoir. The combination of an adventure memoir with the more personalized touch of including journal entries, photographs, and other material made this feel like a book that readers could really invest in on multiple levels.

The vivid imagery of the writing and the outstanding experiences both good and bad that the author shares to tell a powerful story of adventure, but also lends

On the surface, this book is a compelling travelogue of a sailing journey around the world by an intrepid woman, her man, and sometimes, her teenage boys. She looks at the cultures she visits with a curious eye, not as a typical "yachtie" but as someone truly seeking more depth in her knowledge of other cultures. Underneath is a story about courage, resiliency, and the curve of relationships. Even deeper is a message about awareness and listening to your gut. I finished it in a week. ...more

What an adventure! Rather than sail the ocean myself I'll happily stay on land. I enjoyed living vicariously through this brave woman's experiences and wonder where she got her grit and character. This well written memoir is a great read. ...more

Wow, any unbelievable journey that’s full of adventure, understanding and heartbreak that will delight you and intrigue you; wishing you could go, but in the end will make you happy just to read it about it. The storyline reminds me of Micheal Palin (Monty Python fame) world adventures with its connection to the people, the food and place and no matter where you go, people are happy to try and connect with you. Of course It’s not all fun an games, but that is something you’ll discovered as you r ...more

Seeker by Rita Pomade

This is a fabulous adventure story and travelogue in one. Rita and her husband Bernard have accomplished the dream of many, but the action of few-realizing the bold journey of sailing around the world in the 1980s.

A better travel guide would be hard to find. Name a country, a food or a culture and Rita was there to try it. Bernard was the ship taskmaster, always busy with the boat, but Rita; she was everybody’s friend and kept a journal- hence this book.
