One thing you learn about magic is that just when you think you know what it’s all about … it finds a way to surprise you.
I’m a tad obsessed with Lev Grossman’s The Magicians. The only problem is that the best intentions in the world have so far only extended far enough to buying the trilogy, not actually reading it. It’s been on my ‘I must remedy this egregious error immediately’ list for too long already but at least I’ve binge watched the TV series so I haven’t missed out entirely.

For fans of Lev Grossman's The Magicians there a lot here. It tells the story of the first book from Alice's perspective. People not familiar with the novel, or at least the SyFy series based on Grossman's books won't get a lot out of this, but it's definitely a fun read for those who are. While the plot doesn't diverge hugely from the original, it is interesting to see Alice's point of view. We get to know a bit more about her thoughts, and her mindset when entering Brakebills. The art is simpl ...more

Thank you to Netgalley and Boom! Studios for the review copy in exchange for an honest review. This does not change my opinion in any way.

I read The Magicians well over 10 years ago and then reread it a few years ago. The first time I loved it. The second time I was more aware of what was putting people off this book. Even so, it still worked for me. I never did get around to reading the next two books but I did see The Magicians tv show, stranded in season 3 though through no fault of the serie

I don’t have read the Magicians trilogy yet, but I’ve seen the TV shows and I like it a lot. This graphic novel takes back the story from the start but clearly focusing on Alice point of view. It sure has a lot of difference from the TV shows, not in term of major events, but more in the characters (they are so different physically (Penny!?!) maybe they are describe like that in the book, I don’t know), but nothing that really matters in the end. I like the art, like the story, really fast pace, ...more

Thoroughly enjoyed seeing through Alice's eyes for once. The artwork and storyboarding were beautiful. I really liked the drawing style of the artist. It’s great to be able to see all the characters appearances fully flushed out. Most of the characters weren’t what I expected them to look like, but that’s probably because I like the TV show. Unfortunately, the plot was a little slow in places, and therefore frustrating.

I absolutely loved The Magicians Trilogy. It was one of my favourite books that I read last year.
This graphic novel does not disappoint. Absolutely love the drawings and seeing the story from Alice's perspective.

“Alice’s Story” by Lilah Sturges, Lev Grossman, Pius Bak is “The Magicians” told from Alice’s perspective thus showing us things that weren’t necessarily pointed out in the book originally.

As a huge fan of the book and the TV series, this graphic novel was just what I needed after the latest season of the show ended. “Alice’s Story” combines the familiar plot with some great art. It was a bit surreal at first seeing the characters look different but that’s the beauty of it — we get to see a new

Thanks to Netgalley for the opportunity to read early for an honest review.

I've read The Magicians series (and liked them) and watched at least two seasons of the tv show (maybe three), so I'm very familiar with the series and was intrigued by the idea of this. I don't know what I expected from this story, but I didn't find it. It felt like "the best of Alice moments" from the series, and although it is Alice's story, most of it was repeat that was originally from Quentin's point of view in the

As a huge fan of Grossman’s original trilogy, this graphic novel has been at the top of my TBR since it was announced. Thank you so much to the publisher for granting my wish and sending me a copy of it.

This book was so wonderful. Alice is such an endearing and beautiful character in The Magicians so it was incredibly lovely to get to revisit the story from her point of view. The author’s really captured her spirit and I loved being able to read her innermost thoughts about the things that she g

There’s a good chance that you might have heard of The Magicians before. It is a well known series written by Lev Grossman involving a group of students who discovers a land they thought that was originally written in a book. They also happen to deal with magic as well.

Alice's Story took me by surprise, really. The comic starts off slowly and it takes time to set the story on fire, but when it happens? It's pure blast! Alice Quinn can do magic and she wants to attend Brakebills College for Magical Pedagogy, where her brother used to study too before his death. She makes friends with Quentin and Penny and soon we have a love triangle and Penny drops out. The friends loved Fillory fantasy books as kids and it would seem that Narnia happens and they get to travel ...more

In general, I liked this, but overall I don't understand who it is written for- other than super fans. This graphic novel sticks to the plot and characters in the book (The Magicians), so those who have only seen the TV show would most likely find parts of it confusing as the show deviates from the book. For those who haven't read the book or seen the show, there is not enough explained to fully understand all of the plot points.

My main issue is that even though it is told from a different POV,

2 stars.

I didn't enjoy this. I found it a bit too boring and the artwork just didn't appeal to me. I do have a positive thing to say about it though and that's that I really like the cover and that is my reason for this being 2 stars and not 1. Unfortunately this was not for me.

I haven't read the series itself yet, but after reading the graphic novel, I'm excited to pick up the books.

The beginning felt a bit disconnected between years and events and it felt like there were important parts missing from the story.
The artwork is fitting for the genre, if you like it a bit dark and gothic-themed.

Thank you Netgalley for providing me with a copy.

This was a surprisingly great story. I've heard of the T.V. adaptions of The Magicians, but never watched the show. -- perhaps now I should start! This graphic novel got me hooked on all things magic. The world-building, the complex character development, and even the awesome spells were some of the things that lured me into this story. Alice was awesome, and I hated the ending (yes, I love sappy endings!). This book also made me fall in love with graphic novels all over again, and I would recom ...more

I’m in love with the artwork, and storyline. Now I’ve not yet read the full magiancian series, or watched the show. But after this I surely will for the both of them. I honestly didn't like it that much. The art was amazing but the story was a bit boring. I lost interest really quick.

Merged review:

I am afraid I wasn't that impressed with the book. I absolutely loved the art, it was very well made but the contest had me loose interest a bit fast.
It could be because I'm not familiar with the original stories about the Magicians and therefore lost something, but I couldn't seem to stay interested.

I received an ARC copy of this graphic novel from BookCon. All thoughts are my own.

I am honestly surprised at how much I enjoyed this! I purchased The Magicians trilogy a while back and it still sits on my shelf unread. I was wary of reading the graphic novel inspired by the books before reading the original story mainly because I wasn't sure if I'd understand what was happening enough to enjoy it and I also didn't want to be spoiled for the other books.

Turns out I didn't need much background t

I haven't yet read the Magician's Trilogy. I saw this book on Edelweiss and decided to read it because it's a graphic novel and I was really surprised by how much I enjoyed it. It feels like an adult version of Harry Potter but it is much darker and with far more angst.

The story focuses on Alice Quinn, a clever young woman who manages to get into Brakebills college where people go to study magic. Alice has a tragic background because she lost a brother who also attended the college. It might be

The Magicians is a dark Portal Fantasy trilogy by Lev Grossman that was adapted into a TV series. This Graphic Novel is based upon the original books – not the TV show.
Think College after Hogwarts with sex, drugs and bad mental health – and then give them firepower and access to Narnia to really party!. The original trilogy dragged the reader through some dark corners of the main characters souls before showing any light. This Graphic Novel parallels the events of the first novel in the series,

“Josh, so disarmingly funny. Janet, wicked but always entertaining, and Eliot, larger than life.”

This graphic novel started off fairly happy, but then things slowly got darker and depressing. That’s just how it always goes for this lot isn’t it?
Still, I really liked Alice’s Story. The art style wasn’t extraordinary, but it was very detailed, and I just loved seeing the events of the first book unfold from her perspective. (Okay, I haven’t read the first book, but I’m familiar with the characte

With Alice's Story why I expected was something new, something different, in particular, what Alice experienced as a Niffin. Instead what I got was the entire first book of The Magicians trilogy told from Alice's POV. It was repetitive and lacked the power of the original book. What's more, there were errors. Elliot and Janet aren't in the same year as Alice and Q! Therefore they didn't go to Brakebills South with them and didn't graduate with them. Charlie is almost an unimportant plot point, w ...more

As an avid The Magicians fan I was extremely happy that my wish was granted on NetGalley! But at the same time this being an avid fan somewhat ruined all the surprises in the comic book for me as I had already either read about them in Grossman's novels and/or seen it happen on the TV show (which is amazing, by the way, GO WATCH IT).

So if I rated this according to the story itself and the writing, well... I wouldn
