Frost, Sam Neumann's third novel, is certainly an interesting read. It's full of dark, unlikeable characters whose motives are often not known. A quick and easy read filled with suspenseful moments and surprising revelations, you simply end up tearing through it! Well written, fast-paced and a deep exploration of the human psyche. I was hoping that protagonist Amy would find her way through the maze of life and perhaps receive some good luck. I really felt for her in some of the situations she g ...more

I received this book for free from Publisher in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

Sam Neumann is a new author to me and there are a couple of reasons why I picked this book up. Firstly it snagged by attention with it’s beautiful and slightly gothic cover. Secondly, it tapped into the part of my psyche that can’t get enough of true crime with its inclusion of the character Arnold Dooley a man who it is widely believed ki

Amy Frost has reached rock bottom. She knows that this is rock bottom. She’s a thirty-one-year-old single woman who is back, living in her childhood home with her mother while working a minimum wage job at a local diner. Her world is fueled by her all-consuming desire to drink her pain and sorrow away. Amy navigates her life through stages of drunkenness; how drunk she is, determines how good she’s feeling. Her life was going now

Amy Frost is one of those relentless, self-sabotaging people. She will keep you interested, if for no other reason than to see what her next disaster will be. But Amy has found herself right smack dab in the middle of a good story. Lucky for us! Author Sam Neumann has concocted a complicated plot and Frost, as his main protagonist, doggedly pursues the questions raised by the plot. I liked this story for a couple of reasons. The husband who was acquitted of the ax murder of his wife yet everyone ...more

Secondly, it tapped into the part of my psyche that can’t get enough of true crime with its inclusion of the character Arnold Dooley a man who it is widely believed killed his wife, however, there wasn’t enough evidence to convict. Sound familiar?

Starting Frost can feel a bit ambiguous but despite not exactly knowing where the story is going, it’s told so well that you’re content to just read about the characters and their daily lives. The author paints beautiful, descriptive scenes of the mountainous Colorado landscape and capture moods perfectly with light and temperature. I felt cold and warmth throughout the story as if I was there in the town of Ballast. The use of specific colors lend to a skillful interpretation of the atmosphere. ...more

Great Character development

First of all, it's four stars for me because even though I know the majority of the world is ok with it I didn't like the alcoholism and profanity. I feel even though it probably makes Any more relatable to most the story would've been just fine without either that's how good the plot is as well as the author's ability to develop characters in very few words. I'm actually impressed. I felt like I knew all the main characters without much being said about them simply th

Wonderfully Written

This is the first book of Mr. Neumann's that I've read but I doubt it will be the last. I was slowly but completely drawn in by the curious situation the main character finds herself in. Tough on the outside, but internally fragile, she tries to cope with circumstances that eventually spiral out of her control.

Mr. Neumann skillfully paints a picture of despair and of things that are not as they at first seem. "Fog mutes the changing aspen leaves; bright reds and yellows dampe

Even after I read Frost by Sam Neumann I am still not quite sure what to think about it. I like it but at times I wondered what I was reading. Was it a thriller, Mystery, a weird romance?

The characters are dark and Amy will have readers wanting her to find peace and find what she is looking for in life but readers will question why she reacts to certain situations to the point you wonder how she is ever going to be able to find her way out.

This book has readers thinking about it long after they

This story was a bit hit and miss for me. I liked the first 2/3 where I resided mostly inside Amy's head. It was an interesting place to explore and I liked her voice, I liked being a spectator to her journey; I was rooting for her to get her shit together. She was a realistically drawn character who wore her flaws on her sleeve. But around the last third of the story, after Amy leaves a certain place, the 'genre' changed and the story had a different vibe entirely and I didn't really like it mu ...more

Just finished narrating this book for the audiobook version. Though I read this book for my job, I found myself entranced. On my read through, I couldn't help but skim down and maybe even skip pages to see what happened next. I couldn't wait. It was stimulating, thrilling, and dynamic. Just like a good mystery thriller should be.
