Dee had been fighting one war, only to find herself caught up in another . . .

When circumstances leave Dee stranded on the breakaway planet of Lassa, she has to choose--take the easy way out, or stand and fight an enemy much like the one she left behind on her home world of Garmen.

For Sebastian, leading the Lassian resistance has come at a heavy price. Forced to gamble the last of his resources on a risky ploy to gain some leverage over the Core Companies that run Lassa, he stares defeat in the face when it fails. There's no fallback. Nothing more to work with. And it seems the Cores have entered a deal with a hostile alien force to enrich themselves even more.

But Dee inspires him. Even though it's his fault she's on Lassa to begin with, her courage and steady calm are the assets he needs, and unbeknownst to them both, she has the key to bringing the Cores to their knees.

They'll just have to turn the lock in time.

This is second in a sci-fi romance and we meet Dee in the first. I don't think you need to read that one before this one because Dee is pretty much background as one of Leo's bodyguards, but it wouldn't hurt.

I liked Dee a lot. And I liked that she rolled with the setbacks and did her best to set things right, willing to risk herself for the benefit of others. Plus, every interaction with Fluffy (an abandoned pet) was pure gold.

I'm less charmed with Sebastian, but I think that's the plot's fault. For the situation to be where it was that they needed an outsider like Dee to help them, his resistance has to have been pretty full of fail. And that includes their last-ditch effort at ransom that initiates their contact with Dee. It was a colossal screw-up from start to finish. Failure is not a good look, and it's even less so when we discover that his organization suffers a gigantic leak in its inner circle. So he's also a bad judge of character and/or bad manager of resources since those leaks have cost them standing with people who rightly fear retribution should they help.

Plus, there's a section in the middle where I just got bored. Forest grandeur and a waterfall getaway while under-resourced and unable to trust anyone wasn't a compelling read for me. I think it was Fluffy that pulled me through, the fierce little thing.

Anyway, once the action picks up and Dee goes all butt-kicking goodness I was back in it and happy to be there. I never did fully warm to Sebastian, but I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt for Dee's sake. So I'm going to call it four stars. Not as good as the first one, but good enough I'm eager to pick up the next.

A note about Steamy: There's foreplay that leads to sex, but it pulls back pretty quick. There's some skinnydipping and kissing and enough detail that I'm going to call in the Steam tag. But it's not very steamy at all, really.

If you enjoy intelligent sci fi with perhaps a smattering of romance then this author should definitely be on your reading list. This particular book follows on from Breakaway when Garmen resistance fighters helped bring down those known as the Core. Dee was one of those fighting but she finds herself stranded on a ship going to Lassa. Ok she’s not the type to panic or faint but when she’s mistaken for the spoilt daughter of a ruthless member of the Core Dee needs all her resources to bluff her way out of it. Luckily the small crew of Lassian resistance led by Sebastian believe her but things get a tad messy when they land and Dee and Sebastian suddenly find themselves running but they are not alone and their companion is anything but ordinary !
Another cracking story from this author and I love that it’s her heroine that quite rightly leads the charge so to speak. Dee isn’t written as wishy washy and she’s very resourceful , not to mention capable of just about anything. There’s a humdinger of a mystery for Dee and Sebastian to get to the bottom of and treachery is often hiding in plain sight. If you enjoy a little humour in your books then I’m pretty sure there’s something fluffy here that just might up the entertainment value but to my mind this was more of a sci fi thriller. This is an interesting world with characters that jump off the page and I happily recommend this book.
This voluntary take is of an advance copy and my thoughts and comments are honest and I believe fair

3.6 stars.

It wasn’t bad but I like Breakaway, Verdant String #1, more.

Dee was Leo’s bodyguard, hero of book #1, I couldn’t help wonder why she get her story, because nothing special about her in book #1, well, except being a female bodyguard.

However, her story was interesting despite H and h of this story pretty much average.

After little bit break, I will continue with this series.
Because I love its world building.

While this is a great story overall with lots of action and adventure, there are some pretty noticeable plot points that just don’t make sense or are left weirdly hanging. First, the romance aspect… Dee and Sebastian are complete strangers one minute and within a few hours they are doing the dirty and can’t live without each other. Huh?? Shaeesh! There’s insta-love and then there is insta-stranger-love. There is absolutely no reason or depth or understanding as to how that happened. It’s just… there it is. And what is with that super weird sex scene/interlude swimming get-away slapped in the middle of the book? Totally weird. AND… there are threads completely left hanging never to be uncovered (SUPER annoying!) like who was the other traitor? The guy piloting the hover craft that was the second mole? We’ll never know because that thread just dropped into nowhere.

If one can roll their eyes at these kind of things, and if one enjoys fast-paced, action-packed sic-fi light, Ms. Diener really is one to choose, though… just don’t judge the series from this one book. Hopefully you can do what I did, just enjoy all the fabulous points and know the rest will get better (judging from her other series, some of which are included in my all-time favorite pile).

I loved this one. It felt a little slow to get into even though it starts in the middle of a fire fight. I think i was less than enamoured with Dee's character in the previous book. But by the end of this book, I thought she was great.
The story starts when the Caruso are attacking Garmen (as in the previous book). Dee is the leader of Leo's security team and gets stranded seeking shelter on a Lassian pleasure cruiser.
Mistaken for a feather brained socialite from Lassa, Dee gets kidnapped by accident. It's not as simple as that, but that's essentially how her and Sebastian meet.
Dee's kicks butt and takes numbers. She's usually cool as a cucumber under pressure and works hard to keep her moral compass pointed straight in these hard times on the peripheral of the Verdant String.
The story is similar to the last one in that Lassa and Garmen have a similarly corrupt power structure and a rebel force determined to take down the Core Execs. Only Lassa is even worse off than Garmen.
But you know, the thing that I loved best about this one, was the Tula. She described as kinda like a very small primate. But she made me think of a tiny Cheshire cat. I want one!!!

The action is fast paced but still leaves time to meet characters and learn more about Dee and Sebastian. Sebastian was a great guy. Honourable, steadfast and nobody's fool.

safety is fine

Michelle Diener is one of only two SciFi Romance authors I love. All of her books I read were Super Amazing! All received my rating of Five Stars. Breakeven was no different. It was everything I expected and more. Dee was a courageous heroine. Super smart, could think on her feet, a first class warrior, and best of all? in Sebastian's eyes. . . she was like the golden light that spilled over the planet each morning.

Sebastian broke my heart as the leader of the Lassian Resistance, who fought a losing battle. His people were starved to the brink of death. To Dee's eyes when they first met, Sebastian was a little too lean. . . like food was rationed. His resistance force had no resources left, but seemed to fill with hopeless, traitorous moles. Having Dee showed up in his life at such catastrophic moments and to fight on the Resistance's side was like a miracle.

The entire story was heart pounding, thrilling, fast pace, do or die, never-ending battle! I just couldn't put the book down! Every moment could be the final, the end of everything. I was beyond ecstatic when they triumphed in the end.

The romantic scenes were so rare thus so precious. . . so beautiful. Sebastian could convince you better to love him and to give his story a chance. Here's what he said to Dee . . .

"I was close to going under when I met you, and you've reminded me that there are some good things to be found. That there are some beautiful thing in this world, and while I'm sorry I involved you in this mess, I'll never be sorry I met you."

OK, I loved this book and could hardly put it down but I have to admit that our heroine was just about 2 steps below Superwoman and our hero was just along for the ride which explains why not 5 Stars BUT I did love the overall story and the sexual tension between the two was entertaining if for no reason other than they seldom got to act upon it with the continuous interruptions.

Let me start by pointing out that you really need to read book 1 of this series "Breakaway" to appreciate how she got into this situation.

Bottom Line: Lot of action, over the top heroine for any relation to reality but entertaining all the same. 4 Stars

I really enjoyed Breakeven, which didn't come as a surprise because I've liked every book Michelle Diener has written. But this one was really good. I was hooked pretty much from the start and dare I say I liked it even more than Breakaway? I think I did! This series is quickly becoming one of my all time favorites.

Breakeven features Dee who we already met in Breakaway. I remember not disliking Dee in the previous book but for some reason I also didn't fully love her, if that makes sense. However, this changed completely with this book now that I could read in her point of view. I really ended up loving her because she kicked some serious ass. I probably said it before in some previous review of a book by this author but she always managed to write heroines who are badass and don't necessarily need a man to help them out. You just have to love that.

We were also introduced to Sebastian. He was a new character and as you can probably guess Dee's love interest. Plain and simple: I also loved him. Also probably more than Leo in Breakaway. Not that it's a contest or anything. I just felt it was worth mentioning. The romance isn't the focal point of these books, which is an aspect that I really like. But there was definitely a lot of chemistry between Dee and Sebastian. I just had to say that.

As I mentioned in my review of Breakaway the world building in these books is on point. I really enjoy reading about every aspect of this world, even the darker side. And of course I hope to read even more about it in the future.

Breakeven by Michelle Diener is an amazing action-packed scifi adventure and romance that I just couldn't put down. This story will hook you with its fast paced story and various fascinating characters. I loved it.

*Breakeven can be read as a standalone but I'd recommend to read Breakaway first.

Plot- absolutely loved it! The plot is compelling, fast paced and completely addictive! I was engaged the entire time, even though the romantic climax happens at the 50% mark. I do wish this author prolonged the romantic tension longer, but this is very standard for her. Still, the adventure keeps going and the reader gets lots of time to see the romantic couple together and happy and committed. So it’s not so bad, actually!
The author creatively interwove lots of elements from the first book. Def read these in order, starting with the 2 novellas.
I love the unique sci-fi setting! Well done!

Writing- top notch!

Characters- multiple POV. Very likable and endearing characters that are easy to root for and respect. No one is ever TSTL. They are smart, capable, respectful to each other and pretty much behave exactly as I want them to. …Except for the fact that when it comes to the romance, they practically have sex before they share a first kiss. So wow, that moved way faster than I would prefer. Also, I much prefer when a couple is fully committed to each other BEFORE they have sex. Luckily, they seem very committed by the end.

Cliffhanger - no. I’m looking forward to reading the next book in the series! (Be sure to read them in order.)

Content-
Language- some swearing. A couple f-words, but not used as a verb.
Spice- 1.5 explicit sex scenes but it pulls the curtain pretty quickly. Mentions of erections and breasts.
Format- KU

How I rated this series-
(Each book is a standalone, although they do sometimes build on each other in the grander space opera storyline.)

#0.5 Interference/Insurgency - 5 stars
#1 Breakaway- 5 stars
#2 Breakeven - 5 stars
#3 Trailblazer - 5 stars
#4 High Flyer - 4 stars
#5 Wave Rider - 3.5 stars
#6 Peace Maker - 4 stars
#7 Enthraller - haven’t read yet

I know, I know. I didn't think I was going to give this series another chance, but I just can't stop hoping that it'll get better! Seeing as I quite enjoyed this author's The Turncoat King, I want to see if the magic will happen again. :)

This one was better than the first one and much more interesting. However there were still parts that dragged and the action packed nature of it didn’t quite cover up the fact that there wasn’t a whole lot of character development. However the plot was interesting enough for this to be in the solid three star category. As a funny aside, it wasn’t all that surprising that my favourite character was an animal. :)

Review from 4/16/23:

A thrilling second book in a high-octane, space-opera series

MD has done it again! Dee is a fantastic, kick-ass heroine, and Sebastian is a wonderful romantic match for her. The action is constant and thrilling right up to the very end of the story. Every important plot point is satisfactorily resolved, with an HEA for the romance and all of the evil villains triumphantly defeated.

Reread 8/4/25:

This book was just as wonderful the second time around.

BREAKEVEN starts where Breakaway left off show-casting a supporting character from the first book, Leo's bodyguard, Dee. She is stuck on a ship heading towards another breakaway planet, Lassa and mistaken for a rich, spoiled girl, whom members of Resistance on Lassa hope to take hostage.

Lassa is in even worse condition than Garmen, and once there Dee can not help but get involved in Resistance plans to get rid of their Cores. Along with Sebastian, the leader of the Resistance she tries to collect evidence to bring Lassa's Cores and their leader down and at the same time avoid his clutches. You see, an exotic and very dangerous pet he ordered attached itself to Dee, and now half of the planet is trying to sell her out and deliver her to him.

I found Breakeven more subdued than Breakaway, and Dee while being a proper action heroine, just didn't have Sophie's flair. And yet, the sparks between her and Sebastian were honest, and I really liked their romantic interactions. Nothing over the top and full of wry humour.

Also, talu, the pet, was adorable!

Overall, an enjoyable ride and close to a comfort read for me, - relaxing and entertaining. As usual with this author, there is not enough background in these light sci-fi romances to satisfy my curiosity about the world-building, but I guess, they wouldn't be so light if we dug deeper. Recommended.

* * *

Update Feb 2024: I'm upping the rating of this novella. I keep re-reading it and I keep enjoying it. So up it goes.

2.5 stars
I have been downloading and reading this author's romantic sci-fi novels and novellas for a while. They are not perfect, but they are reliable. I always know going in that I won't be ecstatic about her story, but I also know that I'll enjoy reading it. Her books are light, fast-paced, and well-written adventures, with lots of tension and no sophisticated bits: the perfect escapism literature. I'm slowly plodding through her entire back list. When I'm done with it, I'll start with her newest series, The Turncoat King.

I like Michelle Diener's books. She writes smart characters. None of them do stupid stuff or are tstl.

This book is about Dee who was Leo's bodyguard and security expert from Breakaway. This book starts where Dee was last seen on the landing pad of the sky elevator. When the Caruso attack she takes refuge in a ship then is confused with a woman who is a Core's daughter. Her abductors are with the Lassa resistance. Sebastian is the head of the group. Lots of action and a bit more of the Verdant String politics. I found some of the book a bit confusing because I didn't remember all the details from the first book. I wouldn't call this a stand alone at all. More like part 2 of Breakaway. The action didn't stop and I felt the romance aspect was rushed. I could see Dee and Sebastian having sex but not a long term relationship.

First off, I enjoy Michelle Diener's books. She has a good writing style and I like her characters.

Dee was in the first book in the series. She's part of the Garmen resistance with Leo. Now she's on Lassa and helping their resistance with Sebastian. What makes things so hard is there is a mole in the Lassa resistance which causes a lot of logistical issues. I won't go into the synopsis of the story because it's already been done in many reviews. I will most definitely continue on to the next book.

This story is much more enjoyable when the series is read in order. The author does an amazing job pulling of you into the world she has created and then taking you on a wild ride with action, mystery, suspense, sci-fi elements, an adorable little creature, humor, and romance. There is a HEA for the hero and heroine and totally free of a cliff-hanger ending.

The second book in The Verdant String series is… a bit helter-skelter, for lack of a better word; so this is my least favorite book in the series. (Every series has to have a least favorite book, right? Sorry, Breakeven, your it.)

Breakeven still has all the elements I love and works well as the concluding book in the first “trilogy” of the series, which includes Interference / Insurgency, Breakaway, and this book. If you are continuing on to the back three books of Verdant String, you’ll discover they are very different in plot thread with just a few scattered references to the first three books, but we’ll cover that when we get there.

On to Trailblazer in my reread.

The Verdant String was supposed to be home to planets where everyone flourished. Why would anyone want to break away from that idyllic stetting? It’s a power/money thing.

Lassa is one of the two worlds that decided to break away from the Verdant String. The resulting power structure leaves everything of value in the hands of the elite with nothing left for the rest. Starving and destitute the losers in this world have nothing left but to gamble everything for a chance to change the world. The setup for the story means there will be plenty of people with desperation, heart and courage. As one might imagine, there is also plenty of opportunity for subterfuge, conflict and betrayal. These are many of the best elements of a great story.

In Breakeven, I especially like Dee. She is really a very strong woman, both physically and mentally, thanks to her training and experience on Garmen, the other breakaway world. She quickly insinuates herself into the rebel cause because she believes in it. At first I wondered why she didn’t just concentrate on getting home. But someone that had experienced life on Garmen like she did might find it very difficult to walk away from the same problems on Lassa.

Some of the natives don’t like her, don’t trust her and would really like to send her on her way. Some do like her, most particularly Sebastian. Sebastian is a man desperate for a win. He often seemed beaten down and very tired – a realistic rebel leader. Luckily, he did not give up. Maybe, having Dee on his side gave him a second wind. These two are drawn to each other, but they have a lot more important things to deal with before they can get too close.

Breakeven also has a sweet little pet. A talu. Dee happened upon the little critter when she was hiding out in a pleasure cruiser. She had know idea what Fluffy was, only that they bonded. Fluffy proves to have a pivotal role in this adventure which I thought was cool. Although when I found out why a talu was so important, the cuteness factor kind of decreased a bit – for me.

In addition to a charming pet, several secondary characters give depth and add intrigue to the Breakeven story. Every intrigue needs its sympathizers and its betrayers. They key is knowing who is who.

In Breakeven, Dee and Sebastion never stop running from something or to something. The action is non-stop in a plot that is thick. The romance provides brief respites from the constant commotion, but is perfectly placed and paced in this book. Scifi Romance readers, Breakeven is a great addition to your library especially if you are a Michelle Diener fan.

The author provided a copy of her book in exchange for my honest review.

Breakeven is the follow up novel to Breakaway (Verdant String Book 1). I didn't read the first book, but I was so intrigued by the blurb that I decided to give it a try anyway. I'm really happy that I did.

First, the author gives a great "story so far" prologue that gives you a quick and succinct overview of what has already occurred and who Dee is. Dee, our heroine, is a security officer and was separated from her crew in the previous book. But, we quickly find out, that she is so much more.

The story begins with Dee being the victim of mistaken identity and kidnapped by Sebastian and other members of the Lassa Resistance. She quickly learns the motivations for the kidnapping and finds out that Lassa's situation is very similar to her own group's fight against the same enemy (story line in the first book).

Dee is a fantastic heroine; a true Wonder-Woman. She's smart, level-headed, and good at her job. Once all the facts are laid out in front of her, she can't help but get involved.

Sebastian is a fantastic hero. As the leader of the resistance, he is passionate, intelligent and honest. He refuses to use Dee for their own gains and is determined to protect her at all costs.
Their attraction blossoms believably. And this attraction is not solely based on their physical attributes. It grows stronger out of mutual respect and admiration that develops as they maneuver from one harrowing situation to the other.

And if these two aren't perfect enough, wait till Fluffy joins the adventure. This little show-stealer is adorable and dangerous. She slowly becomes a major player in winning the battle against the Cores once and for all.

This story is a perfect mix of sci-fi and romance. The action, intrigue and world-building is top-notch and the romance is realistic, well-paced and will melt your heart.

Having said that, with so much "new" world-building, it is important to pay attention. There are a lot of balls in the air and players in the fold, so keeping them straight can be a little difficult in the beginning.

If you're a fan of Veronica Scott or S.E. Smith, I think you'll really enjoy Ms. Diener's writing as well. I was sincerely pleased with this space-opera and look forward to finding out what else is in store.

Breakeven is a blast of a book, full of adventure, love, suspense, and daring. Diener continues her saga of the Breakaway planets by focusing on Lassa, a planet that has become precipitously split between haves and have-nots. Into this tension-filled time comes our heroine Dee (a secondary character from the first book in this series, Breakaway). She is inadvertently taken to Lassa from her home world of Garmen. And while she thought the divide between the rich and poor was bad on Garmen, she finds the division on Lassa to be a veritable chasm.

I loved the strength and ability of Dee, a woman who’s worked as security for a wealthy man on her own world. And I adored her hero Sebastian, a man thrust into leadership of a planetary resistance that’s rapidly reaching the end of its rope. They are two marvelous, talented people who don’t do silly things in service of the plot. And how refreshing that is!

What’s fantastic in this book is the relationship between Sebastian and Dee. Diener’s romances are often understated, but that’s not the case in Breakeven. You can feel that magnetic attraction between these two throughout the book, and I loved the way they couldn’t help but touch one another affectionately whenever they were together. Add in some gorgeous, gentle love scenes, and you’ve got one of Diener’s strongest romances to date.

But Diener excels in rich, complex plots, and Breakeven is chock-full of dramatic elements. It’s almost episodic, in that the story moves from one form of danger for Dee and Sebastian to another. It takes time for all these threads to connect into a wonderful tapestry of danger, but when they do the action is nonstop and exciting. The secondary characters are well developed, with several of them hinting at stories of their own.

Breakeven is a fantastic addition to the Verdant String series. While we’ve dealt with the breakaway planets in this duology, I hope Diener returns to the Verdant String in future books.

‘The seven planets of the Verdant String, the green, fecund sources of life spanning five solar systems, comprise the Verdant String Coalition. While the people of the Verdant String know they have a common ancestor, a group of explorers who colonised the planets at the same time a thousand or more years ago, the mysteries of who they were, and where they came from, persist.’

Breakeven is Book #2 in The Verdant String series by Michelle Diener. I have really enjoyed exploring this series which is made up of captivating science fiction, romance, and adventure, all set against the lush and imaginative backdrop of seven life-rich planets, spanning five solar systems. The worldbuilding is one of its strongest elements - each planet feels distinct, with its own culture, politics, and environmental challenges, making the Coalition setting feel alive and interconnected.
A series highlight is the balance between high-stakes action and heartfelt character development. Ms. Diener’s protagonists are resourceful, intelligent, and emotionally layered, often navigating both interplanetary intrigue and deep, personal relationships. The romance elements are woven seamlessly into the plot, never overshadowing the sci-fi core but instead enriching it.
Throughout it all there is a sense of optimism and resilience. Even amid danger, there’s a thread of hope, cooperation, and respect for diversity - both human and alien.
If you enjoy richly imagined space settings, strong and capable leads, and a perfect mix of romance and adventure, then you should jump on board for a rewarding journey through the stars.
Happy Reading…

This book from the Verdant String series starts out with a fierce battle being waged where Dee is caught in the middle while on a mission from her boss, Leo Gaudier. On her home planet, Garmen, the enemy Caruso are attacking. While hiding on a spaceship, she is essetntially kidnapped by the resistance leader from another planet who thinks she is a high ranking official’s daughter. Sebastian has risked everything and used his last resources for this dangerous mission. His planet, Lassa, is experiencing even more dire circumstances than Garmen as the leaders have forced their people into desperate straits.

What Sebastian does not realize once he finds out his plans are tanked is Dee is a warrior too who has a common goal with him and his people. They come together with some unusual help to thwart the rather brutal and seriously evil leaders of Lassa who have sold their planet out to the Caruso as well.

Breakeven is a fast paced, action packed adventure with some romance thrown in to sweeten the story. Desperate times call for desperate measures; however, neither Dee nor Sebastian have lost their humanity. They step up with bravery, ingenuity, and a bit of luck to finds ways in which to defeat their common enemy and find a bit of happiness for themselves.

This book can be read as a standalone; however, the first book in the series, BREAKAWAY, enhances this story. I always come away from Ms. Diener's stories well satisfied; this story is no exception.

Un deuxième tome comme le précédent ... Bof

A second book like the previous one ... Blah !

This is clearly not a series for me : here we follow the adventures of a character from the previous book and it was quite disappointing. There is potential but the characters are too bland or cliché, the universe here is very similar to that of the previous planet and the romance was too instantaneous and artificial ...

In short, a book not horrible but clearly not memorable and I don't think I will continue the series ! For the readers, I rather recommend the other series of this author, the Rising Wave !

This is more like it. This series can be read out of order but I really recommend reading book one as this takes place immediately after. Dee was in the wrong place when things went down on the planet Garmen. She was forced to take cover in the nearest ship on the deck of a way station when it lost it's atmosphere and everything on it was tumbled into space. The ship was the private, luxurious ride to the pampered daughter of the most powerful Core family on planet Lassa. Lassa is a Breakaway planet from the Verdant String of planets which are nicknamed "greed planets" as all the wealth is held by only a handful of Core people. Things are desperate on Lassa and a small resistance group banked everything on following this ship and kidnapping the daughter which they mistake Dee for. They soon realize their mistake but still have to figure out what to do to stop the Core from mass killing their people from neglect. It's an almost impossible situation and someone at the top of the resistance is a mole giving away every move. Action packed and I liked everything but the ending was a little too "batman tool belt" convenient. Still really liked the smooth dialogue and tense situations that kept you reading.

When the alien Caruson launch an attack on Garmen’s tethered way station, Dee Vanuka takes cover in a pleasure cruiser and is mistaken by the Lassian resistance for Rina Fattal, a spoiled rich girl whose father is leader on Lassa. After meeting Sebastian Xian and his crew, Dee realizes that in order for them all to survive, she will have to pretend to be Rina Fattal and is drawn into the resistance plot against the Cores who run Lassa. Once they arrive on Lassa, Dee realizes the resistance needs all the help it can get, and there may be a mole that is making things even more difficult. We met Dee in Breakaway and at the end she was left floating off into space, so it was great to hear her story. And what a story it is. Even though Sebastian and his people are being starved and mistreated by the Cores, they’re determined to make things better and get help from the Verdant String against the Cores. He’s a strong, determined leader and although he’s sorry that he’s the reason Dee is on Lassa, he’s happy to have her help. They make a great team, and an awesome couple as well. I’m really enjoying the Verdant String series, and look forward to more stories in this world.

A tense thrill ride in this must-read space opera!

This tension-filled novel has rebellion, espionage, pulse-pounding action, a cute little pet, a dash of romance, and a cool-headed heroine. What more could you ask for in a space opera? I highly recommend this novel to everyone who loves adventurous sci-fi.

I am so happy with this newest sci-fi adventure from Michelle Diener. It can be read as a standalone, but it is better if you have at least read the previous book in this Verdant String series, “Breakaway”. The culture, politics, lingo, and a few characters were introduced in that novel. The romance and violence both feels like it would be rated PG-13. The romance element is secondary to the adventure plot.

If I was comparing “Breakeven” to Diener’s brilliant “Class 5” trilogy, I would say that “Breakeven” has fewer moving parts for a slightly less complicated plot, but it is just as tense, entertaining, and has equally smart, capable lead characters.

After the detonation was set off on Garmen (that story is covered in the previous book and would be to your advantage to read it first) Dee finds herself on her way to Lassa with the Lassian resistance leader and his team after being mistaken for the daughter of the Core leader in Lassa. Then caught up in a spur of the moment impersonation of Rina Fattal to save their lives while being unavoidably towed to meet up with Rina's father. Lots of cloak and dagger action on a Corp controlled planet whose workers and their families are suffering as much or even more than the people on the now liberated Garmen. Then there is the steamy romance between Dee and the resistance leader Sebastian. Very engrossing storyline and so entertaining. Worth the read!
