For fans of Let It Snow by John Green, Maureen Johnson, and Lauren Myracle, ONE TRY is a charming Christmas novella set against a gorgeous Hawaiian backdrop.
When Thompson is home for winter break he finds out the Tiki House, the local hangout he loves to hate, is in financial trouble. Determined not to let one of his favorite places close, he and his friend Johnny concoct a plan to save it.
Thompson’s ex-girlfriend is home for Christmas, too…And she wants to help.
What happens when the two get together to try and save their favorite Honolulu dive?
Part romance, part comedy, ONE TRY is about going for it–in life, love, and everything you do. It appeals to fans of Hallmark Christmas movies and novels by Debbie Macomber.
Though ONE TRY is technically the third part of the Thompson Lake series it can be read as a standalone young adult romance novella.
Deanna Cabinian is the author of One Night and One Love. When she isn’t working or writing she enjoys traveling and spending time with her husband and their Havanese dog, Cuba.
A huge thanks to Mrs. Cabinian for offering me the chance to read this book in exchange for a fair review. This has not influenced my thoughts on the book.
The thing Deanna Cabinian does best with her writing style is create characters that feel so real they’re almost tangible. This is the third book in this series (though they can all be read as standalones), and every time a new one comes out, I get excited to catch up with these characters. The plot is fun and it is paced in a way that it managed to keep my attention. Her writing is consistent with the previous books. The entire book is decently executed fluff, and if you’re in the mood for such a read, give it a shot.
I loved going back to Honolulu with Thompson in this 'One Try' novella. Thompson is coming back home for holidays and it turns out that Greta (now his ex-girlfriend) is there too. As Christmas is the time of magic Thompson hopes to get Greta back since they are uniting their forces to save Tiki House (the bar where Johnny the Elvis impersonator and Thompson met). I really like the way Deanna's characters are so normal and so real. Reading Deanna's books you feel like a part of the story, like a family member. Thompson Lake books give a really good advice concerning our everyday lives as they tell stories about life, love, friendship and family. I must admit - It was good to be back in Hawaii. I'm definitely waiting for more Thompson Lake books to come.
Another winner in this series that continues to be heartwarming without being saccharine. Holds up as a standalone but if you haven't read the first two will have you going back for more of Thompson, Greta, Johnny and the gang.
