It starts out fine. The vocabulary is simple, but that seems in keeping with the narrator; the point of view narration keeps in character as a plain spoken youngster trying to make sense of her world.
At first the author does a pretty good job keeping consistent with the ‘un-powered’ world building, but does mess up on a few key details that a reader familiar with non-electric living will catch. At first it's not enough to ruin the book, but enough to kick one out of the story-world for a minute

‘A year spent in artificial intelligence is enough to make one believe in God.’ - Alan Perlis

Wisconsin author RD Palmer makes his literary debut with THE ONE. He has been a Solution Manager, working for one of the largest software companies in the world, has worked for one of the largest computer hardware companies in the world – including South and North America as well as Asia, and has experience writing software for robots - a true proponent of technology - but he wants to bring the possible

Presented as religion vs science, I found this to be more about religion vs religion.

Here we have low-tech religious believers (who nevertheless take quickly enough to spaceships and such) with an absentee but ideologically benevolent god, vs hi-tech religious believers (who nevertheless have a penchant for ancient religious figures and aesthetics) with a destructive but existent god.

In terms of characterization, the human characters shine through. The One, on the other hand, for me was a little

The One by RD Palmer warns of the possibility that AI or artificial intelligence may take over our lives. An AI entity, the One must be destroyed. There is a good mix here of Christian/Amish beliefs, science fiction and the battle against artificial intelligence running amok in society. This book is totally on the mark, as the advances of AI become more prevalent in our daily lives. Even Elon Musk notes that “AI is the biggest risk we face as a civilization.” This is a fascinating look at these ...more

This novel by RD Palmer is a unique dystopian tale. It tells the story of a group of people, a mixture of Amish and English, who must learn to work together during a drastic time in their lives. They must defeat an Artificial Intelligence machine that conforms to look like an actual person. However, this machine lacks emotions which means it is unforgiving and deadly. They must work together with each of their own unique skills and abilities to help fight off this machine before it’s too late.

With the improvement and advancement of intelligent machines happening everyday this could not be more relevant to current society.

There is no doubt in my mind that eventually machines will overtake humanity and become the dominant race on earth. But in the eventuality of this happening, will God step in and interfere? Or will he let the creations of his creation take over and prosper?

This book tackles that question perfectly and does so in a way that had my eyes popping out of my head at some

The One, by R. D. Palmer, is a sci-fi novel centered around AI and the conflicts between religion and science and what it may imply to the human race.
The plotline is well outlined right from the start, with a clear direction and strong links to Christian thoughts. It goes on describing the dangers of AI controlling the world, with no ability to empathize or to feel any kind of human emotion. What are the pros and cons of living in such a world? The writing is very good and reflects all the tense

AI vs faith and belief in the human race

The One is an Artificial Intelligence story about an entity that is created to look and act like a human but has no emotion so is not hampered by a conscience or emotional attachment. Artificial intelligence has been developed to a point that it may take over the world. There is a stark contrast between the AI creation and the human existence. I found the story to a fun read that drew me in and kept me turning the pages to find out what happens next. I fou

R.D. Palmer begins The One with Naomi racing against death as she braves helping her family when the Harvesters appear. This is a memoir of her life and what it had become. She stood by her Amish beliefs strongly and treasured her family ties, which makes it harder when she watched the Harvesters consume those she holds dear.

You will find The One a gripping inspirational suspense. R.D. Palmer shows the dangers of an Artificial Intelligence run world. This is one of those novels that gives a glim

The genre on this one is a combination of Amish and Sci-fi (or speculative fiction, as it's sometimes called). A human invention of artificial general intelligence (AGI) has taken over the world. At first invented to stop wars and improve existence, the AGI exceeds its design and seems to aim at stamping out human existence like a plague infesting the world. It's up to one reluctant young Amish girl to kill it. I'll give it four stars.

I found the story to be good, although a little predictable.

The One is the second book in a trilogy about a war between artificial intelligence. However, that description alone does not do it justice. There is a strong Christian theme, plenty of common phrases used in the Christian community throughout the book. There are also elements of good vs evil, hope, empathy, and plenty of cultural Christian references.

The distopia is executed fairly well with an interesting story line that is not very common. I imagine this alone would be very compelling to man

A Unique blend of Science and Belief!
The book brings the message about the dangers of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and warns about its impact on the human race. It says that through a story wherein heroes armed with courage, trust and hope are on the mission to defeat an AI entity (The One) who is an image of man, very powerful but lacking all emotions. The battle is tough and it’s the test of humanity and so called human. The plot is filled with thrill and creativity on the one hand and on othe
