Breaking Out

Rate this book
Mati Viveiros is done with men. Her family will never love her for who she really is, and the men she’s dated haven’t done much better. The only exception is Reese, who is the perfect boss, mentor, and friend. Wanting more would just be greedy.

Reese Lamont is finally in a place where he’s genuinely satisfied with his life, his struggles in the past. Are there still things he wants? Sure, but he’s too old to change his ways and he’s never going to cast himself in the role of sleazy boss, so Mati can’t ever know the extent of his feelings.

David Zapetti spent ten years with the Boston PD before realizing a change was required. Now he’s in the personal protection business, where the money is good and the boredom immense, which is just what he wants. David knows the minute he sees Reese and Mati that there is nothing boring about either of them, but that doesn’t stop him from volunteering to be their protection—and a whole lot more than that.

Samantha Wayland

Samantha Wayland has three great loves in life; her family, writing books, and hockey. She is often found apologizing to the first for how much time and attention is taken up by the latter two, but they forgive her because they are awesome and she clearly doesn’t deserve them.

Sam lives with her family -- of both the two and four-legged variety -- outside of Boston. She is a wicked passionate New Englander (born and raised) who has been known to wax rhapsodic about the Maine Coast, the mountains of New Hampshire and Vermont, and the sensible way in which her local brethren don’t see a need for directional signals (blinkahs!).

Her favorite things include mango martinis, tiny Chihuahuas with big attitude problems, and the Oxford comma.

This was just freaking delightful. Nothing else needed.

To be honest, I didn't care about the secondary plot. I was 1000% here for the beautiful thruple that came into being.

This is a standalone MMF menage romance, but it felt like it was part of a larger world of MM and MMF couples. I say this because the characters here have “strong” connections to other people that didn’t feel fully fleshed out in this work, as if their relationships had been discussed comprehensively elsewhere and myriad secondary characters were now making cameos. I’m not sure if that’s in fact the case, as I haven’t read any of the other books, but that was how it felt. Honestly, I would have liked it more had there been more explicitly-stated settings, fewer side characters, and more action driving the plot.

It was a bit like two books were smashed into one, and eventually Mati’s family became a large part of the mystery of her assailants. Nothing she can’t handle with some “sit-down and shut-up-dad while I save the family from ruin” and herself from being a pariah. And you can bet the next scene was sexy. The unnecessarily convoluted plot took more energy than I was expecting to give in order to keep people, places, and events all in order. Pretty much, it all (nearly) made sense in the end, but it definitely took the long, kinky, instalove (at least with David) way to get there. I felt I was suspending disbelief far more than I have in a long time, even for menage romance.

I love revisiting this world and all of the interconnected characters. I was excited to get Reese's story. I really liked his long time connection with Mati and how they had both been afraid to express their interest until they were placed in an extreme situation that showed their intense feelings. And I liked the fact that they were still really new when they met David and both had such strong reactions to him and he to them. So it was an exploration for all of them at the same time as far as building connection, chemistry, preferences, and pushing boundaries. They were not really know for sure what they were doing or where it would end up, so it was a journey for all of them with building trust and comfort.

David and Reese were both equally swoony and sexy heroes in their own ways, and Mati was smart, sassy, and could hold her own in any situation. I love all of the extended family in Samantha Wayland's books and this one had plenty of familiar friends. And it also had a bit of mystery and suspense running along the romance and sexy times...and there were plenty of sexy times.

Ultimately it is the story of three people that just fit and are able to give each other what they did not even know that they wanted...and then trying to figure out how they could make it work given the complications and logistics.

I don’t know what disappointed me the most. The plot with enough cheese and holes to make Swiss cheese? The over abundance of glistening/swollen girl parts (YES, I was aware of the girl parts before I started reading 😒)? The extreme amount of on page sex (Can you believe MY pervy ass is complaining about that?😳). Or maybe is was the really lack luster resolution to the “mystery”? I don’t know, but this wasn’t the “magic bullet” to jumpstart me out of my reading slump. YMMV

on to the next attempt.

I liked it at first. Until the three got together. Which is really bad when this is a romance novel.

There are some books that can hit all the right places in your Like centre. This hit all the wrong places. For some reason, I could not stand it when they started making out and I found Mati... sorry, obnoxious! I feel terrible for that alone but I really had to pick up another novel to calm down. And I do like this type of books!

Well, I guess, you can´t win them all. You win some, you lose some.

(Also, Mati´s family was there just so Mati could play "the badass" and get comforted and the reader had someone to despise... but whatever.)

Not my favourite

3 ⭐️

This can be read as a standalone, but to be honest there are so many characters that appear from previous books, that it really should be considered a series at this stage

This was not my favourite of the group.
I love ménage books but I found myself bored in this one. They are all so lovey dovey right from the start and there is no real conflict between them, all of the conflict comes from outer sources. You’d think to manage 3 people in a relationship would actually take work to incorporate everyone’s personalities but that doesn’t happen here

I liked Reece in the previous books and this one was no exception. But I feel that if you didn’t read the other books you didn’t really understand how he has grown over the books. It is mentioned that he never left the house but you don’t really get to see the progress he has made, whereas he has been progressively getting better over the previous books.

David was a good character but I felt he went from being the bodyguard to the chef pretty easily.

Mati was the character that was hardest for me to connect with and I actually didn’t like her forwardness and bossiness in the sex department, which I found strange as I enjoy reading strong female characters. That being said I liked her when we saw her outside of the bedroom.

while I liked all of the characters both individually and together as a group, I found the sex scenes kind of boring.

There are a lot of sex scenes in this book and I knew I was in trouble when I found myself skimming them, more interested in the mystery of who was trying to kill Reece than the relationship.

Hodges as always was a hoot and a standout in this book. Would love to see him get a book

I finally read Reese's book and it was way better than I thought. I just love this family! Home and Away is one of my absolute favorite books and it was great to see Callum, Rupert and co. again.

I liked Reese before and now I love him even more. I'm glad to see how hard he fought against his anxiety and how much better he is now.
Mati was a surprise! I had no idea she was such a sex fiend. Love her!
And David? Amazing! He is such a sweetheart with a heart of gold, love him too!

These three make one hot throuple. There was a lot of sex, like a lot and normally I find that boring but in this case? Absolutely not! All the sex scenes were different, interesting and really hot.
As soon as they met, their chemistry was of the charts. It made me kind of flustered and had me blushing.

Totally recommend this book! The mystery was very interesting and kept me on my toes. The found family vibes are the best, it was funny and had some super sweet moments!

😍

Wow this book I didn’t know what to expect. When I seen it on KU I had to check it out. There was no reviews. I’m glad I did. This book was a lot of sexy but it was A LOT more also. It had a story to tell and it was told pretty well to me. I really enjoyed it. It had a lot more kinkier stuff in it than I’m use to but overall it was a great read. I did find myself skimming over parts but it was because I had no clue what was going on because this was my first book by this author and it had a lot from previous books.

Welcome to the magical world of insta-lust with a sprinkle of insta-love, a simplistic "mystery" plot AND ENDLESS SEX. Only David is mentioned to be in therapy, when all three of them should, and Hodges as well, whose presence I cannot find endearing but still a little bit creepy and a lot more sad. He started working for the family when he was 18 and caring for Reese (as a butler, chauffeur, confidant, assistant, surrogate brother, protector etc) has been his sole focus throughout the years, and now the poor sod is 40+, with apparently no life other than this! Why, why, WHY? Yes, I understand that the surely complicated things. Nonetheless, I cannot but feel sorry for Hodges and the life he didn't get to live due to being too caring and loyal for his own good, trapped in this regency-era remnant of employment mixed with servitude. #freehodges

I would also like to point out that, besides being presented as a two-dimensional caricature (tbf, this is the norm for antagonists in this universe) and regardless of whatever else he's done, needs mental health support. He might be stupid, he might be a criminal but he's also a very disturbed individual and to hear his pain ridiculed by one of the main characters, while he's literally breaking down, was infuriating.

Mati's family is toxic. And also caricatures. Pining after someone you see every day for 5 years is, at the very least, problematic. GET THEE TO A THERAPIST. The rest of the Moncton and/or Morisson gang make only cameos, not enough to salvage this.

For all that, and the fact that the throuple did not excite me one bit, one star.

This book was just my cup of tea. The author did an excellent job at portraying a polyamorous relationship without falling into the old mistake of imbalance amongst the three lovers. I could sense the love radiating through the three in equal measure and the way they all cared for each other. It was a bit of an insta love which isn’t really up my alley but it was worth it. I love how there was no alpha male in this, but just three human beings wanting to please and take care of each other. The ending was a bit rushed and I wished to have seen them all exchanging rings (are Reese and Mati also gonna marry? I seriously hope so), but it was really sweet overall and I wish for more poly to be like this.

Glad to see the story for Reese. He needed his story told.

Was a little disappointed in how fast everything happened. I know stress and fear can ratchet up the rate of getting it on but Reese and Mati instantly falling into it and then picking up David in his work building was just a little to much. Especially since Reese thought he was always straight and hadn't from previous stories he been in suggested any different. Loved Hodges the best. Adorable man. This was fun read over all for a troupe with three people. Glad Reese got his happily ever after. Didn't think he had it in him.

5 huge stars! I love Samantha Wayland's books and I devoured this one in less than 24 hours after being pleasantly surprised that SW had a new book out! I will surely be back for a re-read. I'm so glad Reese and Mati got a story (and a third!) and I loved revisiting the old crew in Moncton and the characters from previous Boston-based books. I can't say enough how much I loved the relationship between Reese, Mati, and David; I loved that it was truly about all three of them being together. It was definitely steamy and there was also a plot and substance in the characters as well. love.

Sappy Hearts

I am in love with this growing family of characters. Just all the feels. Each family unit is as great as the previous. The endless love that this chosen family shows is heartwarming.

This is story had some shenanigans. For the life of me I couldn't figure out who was behind the problems. Which was fantastic. There was none of the usual blatant predictability that there is in so many books.

I look forward to the next book or short from this world. (Eagerly and impatiently)

I think this book had a wonderful contrast of innocent and wicked and that kept me interested long enough to read half of the book. But this writer uses a lot of tell instead of show with the relationship and I feel like this keeps me from fully feeling their connection. The scene where Mati is chased, in the beginning, is a beautiful example of show; I felt my heart beating and wanted to read on and on to know what was happening. I’d like to read what conversations R, M & D have, instead of reading that they’re having conversations and getting to know each other. I want to get to know them.

Already read With Grace, Destiny Calls and now Breaking Out. This really should be a series, because I love it! People are connected and come back in other books, I just love that. But it took some figuring out, so please does anybody know if there's a reading-order?

But about the book: If you just want to be there, become friends, maybe live with them and don't want the story to end, it's bloody good. So there's that!

It was my first book from this author so I was confused with all the secondary characters from previous books. ( I would not advise you to start with this one and I do not consider it as a standalone). I liked the story and the mystery but I skipped the more intimate chapters after the 60% of the book. It was getting creative but also repetitive for my taste ….

I loved it!! I was so happy to get Matilda and Reese's story. I can't believe I didn't realize it was available. I was a little annoyed a third person was introduced into their burgeoning relationship but it worked out well. David was an interesting character too. This story had some of the same humor as the others in this series and almost too many sex scenes, but overall a great M/W/M read.

This book felt like coming home. It was so great to visit and catch up with some characters from Ms Wayland’s previous stories. I loved Reese in Home & Away and I was so happy to see him get his well deserved HEA. This will definitely be put on my list of books that I want to reread.

This MMF erotic romance was a pleasure. I laughed, I cried, I sighed with pleasure at the end. You don’t have to read the other books in the series before reading this book.

Love how the other characters tied to the story.
Out of the stories tied to the Ice Cats, this one was the hardest to get a feel for the main characters, especially Mati.
David was my favorite as a well written character, followed by Reese. Mati just felt distant at times.
