One of my all-time classic novels happen to be Jane Eyre, and a reading weakness I have is renditions of classics and fairytales. So when I saw this one, Jane of Air loosely based on Jane Eyre, I had to read it straight away. OMG, I loved it so much, we have Jane who is a foster child who gets a job at Thornfield Estate looking after Edward's grandmother Adele. Well this was a sweet surprise. I didn't think I'd give this a 5 star rating. When I read the synopsis I thought it'd be a 3 or maybe 4 star read, but I was pleasantly surprised. This book was such a beautiful, dark Jane Eyre inspired novel that kept me gripping my seat. The characters were all so well written...I loved each and everyone of them.

This book was such a beautiful, dark Jane Eyre inspired novel that kept me gripping my seat. The characters were all so well written...I loved each and everyone of them.

The story follows Jane Marsh who is a sixteen year old orphan going into her freshman year of college at Huntington. She gets an opportunity, thanks to her best friend, to work at Thornfield Hall caring for Miss Adele. Thornfield Hall, however, is haunted and has been involved in many killings over the year.

Jane is a mystery girl, with an even more mystery tattoo on her back that seems to grow and expand after time. She can hear ghost and feels a sense of home at Thornfield Hall. I love and adore Jane. She has had such a tough upbringing with terrible foster mothers, but she managed to graduate high school early and take care of herself. She is intelligent, loving, helpful, caring, quiet and reserved. Jane kept me interested because no matter how much fear gripped her she continued to push forward and find answers. I loved her! As for the things revealed about her ... oh my. I need her to get a clue and figure it out! LOL

Edward Rochester, three years older than Jane, is a man of many mysteries. He seems to be a sweet guy with such promise, but because of the family curse he is trapped in doing things that he does not want to do in order to keep things in order. Edward had so many amazing moments that my heart melted for him. I didn't care for how abruptly he left Thornfield Hall, but there is promise for him in sequel.

The romance, though slight, was well written. I enjoyed the interactions between Edward and Jane. It wasn't instantaneous and things still didn't seem resolved between them at the end. However, the cute moments they had and lingering touches were just to die for.

Helen, Jane's best-friend, is older than her by three years and has been with her since high school days. I loved Helen for how different she was from Jane. Where Jane was quiet and reserved, Helen was loud and obnoxious. Helen was such a great friend, but her abrupt "disappearance" I have questions about.

Miss Adele was a sweet old granny, but she also had a dark side to her that confused me. I didn't know if she truly liked Jane or not with how she acted towards the end. I feel like she knows a lot more about the haunting of Thornfield Hall and I hope she reveals them.

I need book two immediately. That ending wasn't a cliffhanger, but it left me needing to know more especially after all the revelations that came in those last few chapters. Such a beautifully written story. Can't wait to read the sequel ...more

But it seems that there are rumors floating around about the house being haunted, made a little more real by the laughing Jane hears at night and the intense nightmares she has been having. It seems that Jane was meant to be at the house, but for what purpose she has no idea.

This was very much so a Jane Eyre retelling, but set in a modern time with some great supernatural flair and scary encounters. I found it very interesting how the author created something new and surprising while at the same time very familiar. To be perfectly honest, I hated the classic Jane Eyre pretty much since Jane was a doormat to everyone, forgiving a jerk just because he wants her to- yeah, I have a lot of issues with the book. But, that being said, I am always on the prowl for new versions of the classic to hopefully redeem my feelings of anger and disgust so I was very interested to read this new, unique version.

Jane was at times so very naive, showing all of her sixteen years. Sure she has experienced some harshness as being unwanted, but when it comes to interpersonal skills she has zero experience or knowledge. I did have an issues with how quickly Jane was in "love" with Edward, the owner of the house, after just a few interactions. I would have been 100% behind a crush or some hormonal lust, but love needs to build and there was no building, just a few encounters. I did really enjoy Jane's curiosity and intelligence as well as her stubborn streak- but I do have some questions about Helen...

The ending was the most surprising part of the book! Some twists, and some scary happenings and then BOOM- ending! There was no wrap up or resolution to any of the ongoing questions the book was focused on, just a stopping at the most random of times and it took me off guard. It felt like I needed the rest of the book, but I guess that this is the first of a cliff-hanger series. I have so many questions though! Overall this was a very fast read, just a few hours for me. I am a sucker for the short chapters the author used, making it so easy to say "just one more" until the entire book is over.
