Georgina Kingsley is off-limits. It’s better this way, really. Her brother is my best friend and business partner, the closest thing I have to family. Plus, she’s engaged to another man, one better for her than I could ever be.
But when Georgie is ditched on her wedding day, she needs someone to get her out of town. There’s bad blood between us but I’d do anything for her.
Except give her hot, rebound sex to get back at her cheating ex.
Tough choice. Loyalty to my best friend who has been more like a brother? Or to a woman with a history of driving me crazy and making me want things I have no right to ask for?
It’s a hell of time to realize I’m in love.
*Bad Blood is the fifth book in the LEFT AT THE ALTAR series, in a collaboration of six New York Times Bestselling Authors: J. S. Scott, Ruth Cardello, Raine Miller, Sawyer Bennett, Minx Malone, and Melody Anne.
NEW YORK TIMES & USA TODAY Bestselling author M. Malone lives in the Washington, DC metro area with her three favorite guys, her husband and their two sons. She likes dramatic opera music, staid old men wearing suspenders, claw-foot bathtubs and unexpected surprises.
The thing she likes best is getting to make up stuff for a living.
I read this for the Romance Sparks Joy readalong, but I don't think I'm going to participate in any more discussion on it. I liked the set-up and the first chapter, but after that it quickly blends into a mix of idealizing /putting another on a pedestal, intense feelings I don't understand yet (50%), making much about virginity, relief of the little sexual tension built...and I think I was going into a portion of the book where the characters were afraid to communicate.
2019 RITA Award Winner Bad Blood is just what you need right now. It's low on angst (which I so much enjoy!), the writing is amazing and beautiful and doesn't have excessive descriptions, and the love story is so soft and sweet but also very very steamy. M. Malone made my night, last night, when I finished reading it. I need to read more by her because I just love everything about this one!
So we have a runaway bride; she found out her soon-to-be husband was only marrying her because of connections; we have the brother's best friend hero who has loved the heroine for so long now. Both of them have traits that define them and you will fall in love with them yourself. Jamie is so sweet and only wants the best for Georgie even if it means marrying someone else. Georgie wants to be independent and just have fun without people telling her that is wrong. Both complement each other so well that you won't be able to see one without the other. I also really loved the secondary characters!!
This was fine. Not a lot going on beyond the runaway bride business and the trajectory of the story was pretty familiar. I didn't hate anything about it except for the heroine's controlling brother, but I didn't love it either. What is it with these romance brothers who think they get a say in their sisters' dating lives? It doesn't really seem like a thing in real life and as a plot device I find it more irritating than charming so why is it so common?
Bad Blood is a 2019 RITA Award nominee, one of the only nominees written by an author of color.
I may be wrong in my thought process, but wonder if this story would have received a nomination if the cover didn't have a White guy on it and if the main couple weren't also White. I'm pretty sure they were both White...
Any way, the story was fine, if bland. Lots of talk about an off the page encounter of the two main characters at a sex club that never panned out in the story. There was a lot of talk about wild sex and the female lead wanting to experiment but not as much on page action as I'd hoped based on the conversations between the leads. Georgie's older brother King obviously had his own story in this series, which I didn't read, but he was such a stereotypical older-brother interfering character.
That said, for a novella the world felt completely built and I was able to sink into the emotions. I enjoyed it and would certainly read more of the author's work!
I liked this for the most part. It’s a good length and the protagonists have great chemistry. I didn’t get the “bad blood” part, though. We don’t ever see them be mean to each other and it’s like the book wanted to be enemies-to-lovers but they were too nice and cared too much for it to make sense. Look forward to discussing this on twitter for #RomanceSparksJoy :)
I read this with Romance Sparks Joy as Malone is one of three authors of color nominated for a 2019 RITA award. I’ve heard good things about Malone so I’ll definitely try another by her. The reasons this one was only so-so is largely due to my own preferences. The whole “jilted at the altar” trope doesn’t work for me because I always believe the hero or heroine needs to ask themselves why they stayed in a bad relationship and get some therapy before they start something new.
Additionally, there was a bunch of toxic masculinity in this plot, as can be the case with the “best friend’s sister” trope. Calling King an overprotective brother is far too kind. But also Jamie prevented Georgie from going to a sex club once he found her there and tries to control her sex life. Even though she later gets to tell him how wrong he was, he still displays a lot of jealous and controlling tendencies that gave me pause.
Much of the characters’ actions made little to no sense to me. Georgie was so privileged and pampered, down to not even knowing how to pop the hood of her car. I wanted her to get to the bottom of why she let her parents dictate her choices down to who she marries and to take ownership of her life. I simply wanted more for her.
CW: infidelity, lying ex, references to parental neglect
I really enjoyed reading this, though if ever there was a setup for a book to be a little sexier, this was it since they continuously talk about a sex club that the hero belongs to/heroine went to and he escorted her out of. I normally wouldn't be pro a romance that starts immediately after one of them runs out of their wedding, but there were enough long standing feelings on both sides that I was willing to roll with it.
I didn't think the big brother stuff was TOO egregious, mostly because he doesn't know for most of it, and once he does, he's pretty firmly on his friend's side since the heroine has inadvertently emotionally devastated the hero. I didn't need the epilogues, but I felt like we were getting set up for an oops pregnancy in the first one and I'm surprised that it didn't pay off?
Anyway, I liked this and I will definitely check out more by the author in the future!
This was a cute brother's best friend 1NS to relationship romance. I cared about the heroine, and the plotting and pacing felt solid and a bit like a category romance. I liked that the heroine's arc was about reclaiming her life for herself, including her sex life. I wish I'd gotten a deeper sense of the hero. I want to try more books by this author.
This was a fun, sweet novella about a brothers-best-friend/younger sister. I love these kind of stories where characters love each other in secret, and assume it's unrequited love, but it isn't. This romance delivered the right account of heat, drama, and feel-good vibes.
Malone takes a chaotically, whimsical look at love. James is the guy you warn your heart about. Georgie is the girl you marry. They shouldn't fit, yet they so obviously do. Bad Blood gave me a chance to not only fall head over heart for a handful of new characters, but I also got a glimpse of King and Olivia from Bad King. Bad Blood is the road less traveled, finally making a way home.
Good, fun, sexy read that I think everyone will enjoy. After overhearing a conversation Georgina leaves the wedding chapel and her fiance behind her and sets off for some sexy times with the most unexpected man.
I enjoyed this story of the guy that has a crush on his best friend's sister. We have a runaway bride, a secret romance, and a rather sweet story. There is no ground-breaking content here, but it is well written and engaging.
Awww. This was a really sweet (and a little spicy) novella. The characters were relatable though I wish we had more time to get to know them better. Such are the woes of this format.
Read for OSRBC group and Romance Sparks Joy The story was cute. A quibble I have is that Jamie mentions a sex club at the beginning and it seems that he's into unique stuff, but it isn't reflected in the story.
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaa,I just don’t get the high reviews....
That’s all... “Georgie” is a spoiled, short side immature brat, that doesnt have enough sense to come in out the rain... You know the kind or TSTL h who pouts because the H said they could only have a “fling” and even though she supposedly “wants” him acts like a huge B to him at times because ,he said they “couldn’t “ be anything more... Riiiiight... Georgie is set to marry a guy she doesn’t love and isn’t sure he loves her, when only her wedding day she over hears his congratulating him on timing her down because her family will be soo useful for their business contacts alone... The one smart thing this B does then is run off... But constantly acts like a spoiled teenage B with Jamie... She wants to cut loose and have some fun sex, after the way her ex had always made her feel.. Well Jamie does eventually after trying to push her away like the good best friend to her brother would ,especially with low self-esteem not thinking he’s good enough..... But goes with the time honored cliche of just this one time... Even after sex when he admits how he wants her but doesn’t feel he deserves her thinking she’s asleep,Georgie instead of fighting for the guy she supposedly wants let’s him go.. Then treats him like dirt refusing to even acknowledge him at times or if she does quickly dismissing him after... When he confronts her and lets her know he’s hurt but wants more... She goes along but doesn’t apologize, not really ,making excuses about how he wanted things to “return to normal “.. They start to kinda date but honestly I never felt it between them.... the walls never really came down.... there wasn’t any true honestly or feelings or emotions .... Jamie seems lost to her even when he pathetically tries to fight it ,while after confessing he was hurt when he thought she went out with another and during sex told her he didn’t want her dating others and wanted her to be his and vice versa...she acts as if all that was said was meaningless... This is her reaction when her brother finds out. ““Booty call wasn’t the best choice of words but Jamie is hardly a prude.” King sighed. “You didn’t see his face when you said it.” Skip a few paragraphs to : “I’m really tired. I’ll see you later. At a normal hour.” Georgie rubbed her eyes. Her brother could see himself out since he’d had no problem inviting himself in. “You’re going back to sleep? You’re not going to apologize?” King stared at her incredulously. “For what? You are the one who came in my room uninvited. If you saw anything that traumatized you, it’s your own fault.” King looked like he wanted to strangle her. “Not to me. To James. To the guy who left here looking like he just lost his best friend. Which is really interesting because until recently, I was his best friend. You might want to think about what that means.” Best chapter ,we see King is right... “As soon as Jamie got home, he walked straight through to his bedroom. If he was going to Europe early, he had a lot of preparation to do. He hated doing things on the fly but considering what had just happened, it was best for all if he was on the other side of the ocean. He wouldn’t have a chance to say goodbye to Georgie but maybe that was for the best. Booty call. He shook off the hurt.”
See I just wasn’t feeling it.... these two were just to closed off, they felt too superficial and shallow especially Georgie... I don’t know how old the h is supposed to be but what ever her age she was very immature and lacked any self awareness at all and one minute seemed to see Jamie for the decent kind loving deep feeling guy he was and the next ignored all she knew because she couldn’t be bothered... When she pulled this I just couldn’t read any more... now I know sadly she gets the poor sap back but she doesn’t deserve him and I deserve a story where the H and h really seem to have passion and true emotion ... Ps, thought the sex was gonna be hot or at least interesting ? Aaaaaaaaaaa,no...
It opens on our heroine Georgie's wedding day---and she is nervous. She knows it's a mistake. More I must say, the dread I felt! She ends up leaving the wedding with her brother's best friend, Jamie. Both Jamie and Georgie have had feelings for each other forever, but never acted on them--- because you can never get with your brother's little sister!
Pluses: Really snappy writing and dialogue. Pacing was great, especially for a novella, you really can't waste time, and this moves along nicely. Character work is good. Georgie is a great heroine, she knows herself and what she wants. Jamie is a good character, too. He trusts her judgment but also wants to protective her, and that mix felt real. He's also achingly vulnerable in some ways, which I really liked a lot.
Wishes: This is very minor, but I really key into timeline continuity stuff. And I was distracted by some of this--Jamie says, "I have to leave" and then stays all night. People working all day on Thanksgiving. Walking into bedrooms at 6am. Just...keep that timeline straight.
Verdict: I enjoyed this a lot. I definitely recommend. One thing I LOVED is that the friendship between Jamie and King (the brother) is strong and King is a great friend to Jamie. This does not traffic in silly fights and machismo once the affair is discovered.
Copied & Pasted from Twitter as part of a project where I'm reviewing the 2019 RITA finalists.
a quick enjoyable read. my first book by this author.
i did feel like the back cover copy was a bit misleading though because Georgie wasn't really ditched by her fiance. in fact she left first, after overhearing said fiance and his dad saying something that upset her. so that wasn't quite what i expected going in.
from some of these reviews i read I also expected this big blow up when her brother discovered she and his best friend were sleeping together but honestly I found it pretty tame. King wasn't totally like yayyy in the moment and I was like why is this dude even barging in to his sister's room without knocking and waiting for a reply? But I was actually surprised he was less shouty because usually with this trope of best friend's sis, the brother usually acts a whole fool and i felt King wasn't as bad as i was expecting?
I did love how Georgie stood up to her brother and Jamie a couple times and didnt let them just railroad her. She called Jamie out for making a big deal about her attending the sex club so i was thrilled at that.
I did like Jamie too, even though sometimes he was doing the most like when he realises G is all dressed up to go out and sees she's been trying on thongs. Like chill, dis a whole grown woman out here, she can do as she pleases.
Anyway, i liked them together. i really liked that they had a silly moment/laughter during sex because I love some fun in a sexy time scene! I'll be checking out more book by the author for sure. :)
3.5 stars. Though enjoyable, just misses the mark for me. I read Bad King years ago as the first book in Club Prestige and so was excited to find Georgie and James’ story finally told and in KU. Though I enjoyed it, there was just too much lacking to make it great. Georgie and James have a lot of history (some of it is in Bad King) that is lost in this book. Georgie starts of as a weak person, marrying for the wrong reasons but a lot of this is down to her parents expectations, of nothing. They do not mean to be lacking in support for Georgie, but nor do they know what she really wants from life. James has issues due to his money grubbing family, which are lightly explained but I do feel he was a bit hot and cold in his attention, so no wonder Georgie didn’t expect anything from him except sexual gratification. There is a lot of sex, without them displaying or discussing their emotions. Their past history is a major part of their lives and is glossed over too much. Did enjoy the ending though. Read through Kindle Unlimited but as part of the BAD BUSINESS series, not Left at the Altar series.
This book was just okay for me. It's a light, fun read. I knocked the whole thing out in a couple of hours.
My main issue is that the heroine left me flat. She's 23, filthy rich, and extremely sheltered. She has a greeting card business (which I can only imagine has to be bankrolled by Daddy) but lives at home, has to call her boyfriend for help when her car breaks down, and doesn't even know how to pop the hood of her car by herself. The only moment of strength or independence you see is
Her main personality traits are that she's beautiful, has a smart mouth, and apparently is in possession of multiple facial expressions, which...okay? The fact that a 29-year-old man with a rags-to-riches backstory was into this fluffy little girl was disappointing.
Y el deseo sexual, of course! Una nadería. Muy entretenida. Con momentos sexis bastante logrados. Totalmente recomendable si estás en fase en que no quieres nada profundo. Crítica más extensa, en mi blog.
I loved this book coudnt put it down. On her wedding day Georgina Kingsley over hears her fiance Alex and his father talking about the real reason why he's marrying her. While everybody is looking for her James finds her hiding place. King Kingsley is James Hamilton, III best friend and Georgie's older brother, but Jamie didn't want to do anything that would get King mad at him like being with his sister Georgina. Jamie takes Georgie to his place and Georgie wants jamie to make love to her, but Jamie has to stay away even though he wants too because he really likes her. James and Georgina decide to see each other in secret, but one morning King walks in on Jamie getting dress and when Goergina trys to defend what they have she said something hurtfull that James leaves. Georgina trys to get him to answer her emails, but after a few weeks she decides that he doesn't want her anymore.
Well...this was disappointing. I saw good things here and think Malone is probably a skilled writer. Maybe this isn’t a good format for her - the title is a novella - but there was zero character development, invisible chemistry between the main characters, and a lot of telling rather than showing. The lead male, Jamie, is “in awe” of Georgie, his love interest, because she challenges him, but we never see it. In fact, we never see her do much if anything other than hide in the pantry when she learns that her fiancé is only marrying her for her family’s money and name.
This was a 2019 RITA Award winner, and I’m honestly not sure why, but I’d look for full-length titles by Malone to see if she just needs a longer format to write a successful story.
This book was fun and fast paced. I liked both Jamie and Georgie. There wasn't a lot of angst in this book. Even the uncertainty and insecurities in this book didn't overwhelm the basic storyline. It was sweet, funny, and sexy. Definitely 4.5 stars.
I thought it was interesting that although Jamie and Georgina were often around other people, you still got the sense that they were living in a world of their own. Often coming up for air to see what was going on in the rest of the world. Georgie, as well as Jamie come to some realizations with each other's help.
I read this book in one sitting and really enjoyed it. You get to know the characters, and you get your HEA. Now, I feel the need to go read about King and Olivia.
I voluntarily read and reviewed the Advanced Reader Copy.
I've always loved the best friend's little sister/older brother's best friend stories. It is just a fact of life that most little sisters fall in love with their older brother's best friend. So reading about Jamie and Georgie was fun. Jamie doesn't think he's good enough for Georgie. And she thinks that he sees her as just the annoying little sister. Little do they know they are both in love with the other but both are too afraid to say or do anything.
Until that fateful wedding day that didn't happen. And so the next chapter begins, but it is still fraught with miscommunication on both sides. Will they ever figure things out and communicate with they really want?
Side note, it was good to see King and Olivia get married. Now what about Colin?
This was a fast read full of tension. I personally liked this book. The only thing that Jamie didn't do to Georgie was pull her pigtails. Jamie and Georgie bicker and insult each. They made me laugh with their nonsense. Georgie is a lot of things sassy, immature, independent and smart. She is struggling to do things she wants because she feels she has to make everybody around her happy. Plus she has an overbearing brother she feels is overprotective. Jamie is smart, successful but has insecurity issues. He doesn't feel he is good enough for Georgie. This was similar to other stories I have read, but I was okay with that. In my opinion this story is fun, flirty and entertaining. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced readers copy.
I really enjoyed this romance. It’s full of all kinds of tropey goodness - “enemies”-to-lovers, best friend’s sister, and no strings attached. I loved the banter between Georgie and Jamie, and loved the passion between them. The last several chapters where Georgie wrote letters to Jamie were some of my favorites and I loved the epilogues. Scene where, when Georgie is in pain from all she’s been getting up to with Jamie, Jamie’s solution is to spend the night eating ice cream and watching shows was one of my favorites because it was the beginning of their shift to intimacies beyond what they’d already been doing. Such a wonderful romantic buildup~ strongly recommend!
James and Georgie came from very different backgrounds. When he became friends with her brother King there was a connection, but Jamie ignored his feelings because you didn't mess with your best friends sister. But when he helped her runaway from her wedding after she overheard her grooms hurtful words there was no going back to acquaintances once he got a taste of her. He was so patient and understanding when he left so she could find herself it made me love him. After his upbringing he sure rose above to become a heck of a man. Georgie proved to be a very strong character and finally got what she wanted. All in all a very good story with a happy ending.
