My debut series "My Best Friend is Dense Harem Main Character-kun, But Why am I the Heroine?!" just went live as of this posting! I'm so happy to see my childhood dream of writing my own novel series come to fruition! Though I admit it might not have been the best idea to debut with such a strange concept for most readers, but I'm writing from the heart and not for the big bucks!
I am an avid anime watcher who grew up watching the usual 90's stuff, but eventually came to appreciate manga and light novels after feeling unsatisfied with mashed-up 13 episode conclusions. I fell in love with the LN style of writing and wanted to try my hand at writing my own series so that Western readers could get this charming and simple type of fiction without having to wait forever for translations.
I hope that I can keep this passion of mine going and I hope that I can became the best writer that I can be so that you can enjoy my humble stories to the fullest!

I feel that this is going to strongly try and play itself as a parody of most harem manga/anime/visual novels/light novels.
Checklist to ensure the book follows harem, parody, and Japan's style:
-An attempt at manga style artwork (At least on the cover) ✓
-A long, lengthy title that might require abbreviation to remember it well ✓
-All the "fun" harem cliches/tropes (Or as many as can be fit into a 1 volume book) ✓
- Much ridiculousness in its plot and characters ✓
- Does it get a laugh? ✓✓✓
- Did I enjoy it?✓✓✓

My thoughts:
Before: The first thing I noticed besides the cover, was the title. It's lengthy like most light novels or manga that usually get some kind of anime adaptation or live action adaptation. It kind of also speaks to me as if it really wishes to be seen as a parody of sorts when reading it. But of course, I know this isn't the first time someone has attempted to poke fun at these tropes in manga or anime. So, I'll properly judge it after a nice read through it.
Final: Wow I really enjoyed this book. I think maybe because it's that romance and fluff I enjoy so much.
(I guess I need to actually accept it as another one of my guilty pleasure genres.)
Also yeah this book pokes some fun at the harem cliches and tropes, but really focuses most on being a fun gender-bend romance story. And I can totally see this may be becoming a live-action drama series or anime if it wasn't more addressed to the Western audience.
But I would also like to say that the author he did a good job and is clearly very familiar with anime tropes, light novels, and the romance genre surrounding anime.
And lastly, I will say that I look forward to the next installment in the story.

If you liked The Hentai Prince and The Stony Cat Volume 1 you'll find a few similar themes here and there are a few others I could recommend but this one has a very similar trigger to what this story does.

Not what I expected, but amazing nonetheless
Shintaro Mofujin's book My Best Friend is Dense Harem Main Character-kun, But Why am I the Heroine!? volume 2 is a story which I did not expect, but was still a very good story nonetheless.
From the very beginning, the story in My Best Friend is Dense Harem Main Character-kun, But Why am I the Heroine!? volume 2 is making itself different from any other high school Rom-Com harem story by telling the story of Tomoda Itahashi, or “irrelevant side character B”, as he calls himself, rather than Hiro Manashima, the “generic harem main character”. Even though I would consider Tomoda just as much of a dense character at times during the story. The story is quite intriguing as it uses the setting of many rom-com anime and manga, but this time, instead of telling the story from the eyes of the close to annoyingly dense main character, we get to see it through the eyes of the character I usually find even more endearing: the best friend character. That one character that goes out and beyond to support his dense friend in the pursuit of love. But this time, that friend turns into the love interest. Yup, it's that kind of story. And I loved it!
As for the characters; there are really only two that are worth discussing at length: Irrelevant Side Character B, Tomoda Itahashi, and dense harem main character-kun, Hiro Manashima. Those two can best be explained through following my last review; by comparing with Infinite Stratos and it's infamously dense main character: Ichika Orimura. Although, rather than turning Ichika’s personality around, we now have an Ichika 2.0, and his best friend that tries to get him together with one of the love interests. The characters really bloom out after the gender-swap that happens in the end of chapter one (not a spoiler, it's even in the synopsis). This is where the love interests show their true colours and Hiro actually starts falling in love. You can even say the book's true potential doesn't appear until chapter two. I do have to commend Mofujin on how wonderful the naming of the character's is. Although anyone who has never studied Japanese or watched manga won't understand.
Something I have to comment on in this book is how the dialogues are written in some kind of script-style ([Name]:, rather than “..said Name”) the rest of the book is written, well, like a book. I feel that it's an odd way of writing, although it's fitting for this book where discussions between many characters happens often and it gives off that stuffy feeling of many people talking to you at the same time that happens around harem protagonists.
Although I have praised this book a lot, this book is definitely not for anyone with little experience of anime, similar to the American Kitsune series. It references anime, and especially rom-com harem ones in it's whole concept to get through with its jokes, similar to anime such as Lucky Star or Gintama, and because of this, none to little experience with anime will lead to many jokes going above your head.
Overall, interesting twist to the Harem rom-com genre, and I give it an 8/10. Looking forward to reading future volumes!

This is the first book in the series. Tomoda has a best friend named Hiro who is very popular with the girls even though he hasn't a single clue that he is very popular with girls. Tomoda tries to help him any way he can (Hiro isn't the brightest bulb in the pack) which even goes to praying at a shrine that Hiro might find the girl that is perfect for him.
Because of extenuating circumstances Tomoda ends up changing into a girl. Her parents are able to make the adjustment, things are handled where and a cover story is made up about Tomoda's leving the area and Tomoya's appearance at the school.
The entire book is then taken up with Tomo trying to help Hiro find the perfect girl for him. Hiro is still mainly concerned with eating (a whole lot) and pretty much remains clueless about the girls around him.
Oh, yes. One complicating factor. Tomoda's girl form is ultra-cute and attracts attention from both boys and girls.
It's a light-weight, fun book to read.

So I didn't have an issue with the plot of the book. Very chill, slice of life/romance kind of thing, and other than having read the title of the book and seeing the cover, I had little else to go on initially.
Where's the problem to then score it 3 stars out of 5? The dialog.
So with the dialog, it's set put as:
[Character name]: “Dialog!”
It's written the way that I don’t usually enjoy, and its sort of irked me with how its written in this fashion. On top of that, the majority of the spoken language in the books seems a bit clunky and doesn't exactly run smoothly, at least not with my interpretation. It could sound more smooth in it's original language, so arguably it might even be to do with how it's been translated and doesn't sound so natural in English, but it somehow just doesn't sound right. The wording for inner monologues and descriptions go far smoother and feel a lot more comfortable to read, and some of the parts written can actually be really moving.
On top of this, some of the character’s personalities in the book seem to change so fast they could practically give you whiplash.
There is also the fact that this book does also include changing perspective. This style of writing, although I'm sure does have it's own merits, is not my sort of thing. Not a criticism, just a reflection on my own preference. At first, the perspective and POV (point of view) changed each chapter (POV shared between only two characters through the book), but part way through a later chapter, the POV suddenly switches over, rather than starting a new chapter.
One big thing that irked me is that there is also a scene in one chapter (no spoilers) where a character expresses their thoughts when the person who’s POV it is supposed to be isn't there. If you're going to write something from someones point of view, surely you're supposed to include only things that they are able to perceive, right?

The writing could be less cringy in the beginning, but this is a fun rom com type gender bender story overall. Just needs some work where Tomoda/Tomoyo is presenting his thoughts. There are some bits in the early Hiro perspective that were also difficult to get through due to the cringy nature of some of it. To be fair, I remember that it was cringy in the beginning, but I did not mark the specific parts. Thus, I may be mistaken on this.
Glad the author decided not to make the beginning of the girl perspective more sexual. I was thinking it would be another series where they give every female character's BWH measurements.

Good reading
I found this book on Amazon and the cover and title sounded really good and interesting,so I decided to pick it up. Needless to say I was not disappointed. The story is well thought out and is not super long and drawn out like some light novels out there. Overall I loved it and couldn't stop reading it until the end. I plan to pick up the next books in this series but I plan to wait a bit because it took over doing actually house work (that's how good it is.) So I highly recommend it to anyone wanting a light read.

Noticed this one on Kindle unlimited and I figured, why not? It looks cute and the title promises an interesting premise. The semi script / first person perspective style threw me off for a few minutes, but I was able to adjust easily and it doesn't detract from the story.
What was most jarring to me was how stiff Tomo's family felt. For a precocious younger sister, Kana comes across as overly formal half the time...
All in all, this is a fun little story that I have since purchased.

This was a really fun and funny read. The title had me intrigued and I just had to know how this was going to go down. I loved the tone of this book as its been a while since I consumed any media with comedy as a key focus. I had a great time with all of the characters as they all brought me immense joy. As my first experience with a light novel style book, I think that this is a genre I could get into.

While this may be a satire it is a horribly written parody that could have (and should have) gone through at least two additional rewrites and a line editor.
The concept is fun, the satire has promise but the bad prose, the baffling choice to set up the interactions like court room transcripts, and the grammar errors make it too difficult to stomach.

This was a fun twist on the usual light novel. This book is very self aware of the tropes that plague most light novels and extorts them to the fullest extent. All the anime tropes are there. MC that's oblivious to all the girls that like him, Tsundere, Yandere, nosy lil sister, Rotten Girl, super hot mom, over bearing dad, parents that are never around. etc, etc, etc. What this book does is embrace these tropes and then turns them on a their heads. This entire book is very tongue in cheek and could quite honestly be a LGBTQ+ book if the main character didn't switch genders. Even at it's worse its a bromance, at it's best, it's a nice love story. Two people trying to figure out their feelings for each other. I've already picked up the second book because I'm now invested in this story.
