I am a DragonGod.

Finally, I know what I am. A DragonGod. I’ve been gifted with the magic of the Viking gods. Except my new powers are devouring each other. If I don’t fix this soon, I’ll have no magic left--and no magic means no soul.

To save myself, I must go on a quest through the realms of the Viking gods. It’ll be the most dangerous adventure of my life, taking me past monsters and deadly worlds. Fortunately, the Celtic war god Cade is at my side, along with my friends and allies.

Things get even more dangerous when I learn that I must destroy the Rebel Gods' stronghold to keep my magic. If I don’t succeed, I’ll become a walking husk of a DragonGod, wishing only for death.

So I guess it it looks like the fun is about to start.

Pursuit of Magic is a fast-paced urban fantasy adventure with a kick-butt heroine, a tough hero, and magic that will blow your socks off.

description

Before becoming a writer, Linsey was an archaeologist who studied shipwrecks in all kinds of water, from the tropics to muddy rivers (and she has a distinct preference for one over the other). After a decade of tromping around in search of old bits of stuff, she settled down to start penning her own adventure novels and is freaking delighted that people seem to like them. Since life is better with a little (or a lot of) magic, she writes urban fantasy and paranormal romance.

Four and a half
O my what a humdinger of a book ! I've always loved these fast paced exciting stories but this time the author truly raised her game with lots of Norse / Viking mythology running through it. As usual our favourite characters get to move around a lot and a cave in Scotland is just the beginning as we get transported to the World Tree ( Yggdrasil) and there along with Bree and Cade get to explore the various realms and meet the most wondrous creatures that truly are magical. Plus Valkyries ! Not exactly what I expected but in many ways so much better as Bree is tested with absolutely jaw dropping consequences.
Not as much romance as I'd hoped for if honest but I cannot fault our heroine and what is fast becoming her posse ! I like the newer characters that have appeared in this series but it was lovely to have old favourites back along for the ride. If I must single any one character out it has to be the ever hungry and always brave Mayhem but please watch out as this magical Pug just might have problems with flatulance ! O dear perhaps not what I expected but still hysterically funny which I think we needed to offset all the drama unfolding. Bree and her sister Ana continue in their quest to find their missing sister Rowan but as this instalment ends even though Bree has more control than ever it's a heartbreaking battle against some of the Rebel Gods that leaves this reader crying out for more.
This voluntary take is of an advance copy and my thoughts and comments are honest and I believe fair

3rd book in this series

I do want to enjoy reading about these characters, but the ending was kind of weird. Rowan was definitely going to come back into the story. I just didn't know when. I think it would have been a better plot twist to have her character turn evil as opposed to being a puppet of evil.
Cade is cool, but at the same time I feel his character development is incomplete. I guess he had a tough childhood finding out he was a Celtic God and his parents' treatment of him, but it just doesn't feel authentic. Bree irritates me at times. I feel her character development is flawed because she doesn't really self-talk all that much. It's going from one fight to another. Meh.
I like Anna. I wish the author had focused on her character more.
This book also went off into another subplot. TOO many subplots in this series.... Introducing characters from another book and trying to tie them in together with the characters in this book did not work well. I felt confused. I will finish the series, but if it wasn't free on Kindle unlimited, I would be pissed and would have stopped at book 1.

This was good, a lot more action than the previous two books. Wish things were further along with Cade and Bree.

Bree is kicking ass and taking names!!!

This serie is fast paced with tone of action and great story!!!

This new twist into the Nordic Gods History was AMAZING!!!!

On the downside:
The slow burn between Cade and Bree... I get that only 1 months has gone by but the want you /want you not is drama drama drama!!!

Cade being to of a doormat... Arrrrghhh sometimes he comes out like a love sick lost puppy!!!

more or less, same as before. some actions, some too powerful magic, fighting villains. nothing brilliant (kind of surprised when i found out who was the evil woman, but that's all). nothing special, and i've got to say, it was a bit cheesy.

Recap:

Bree and the other trainees were on the mission to stop mafia boss' goon from bullying store owner and gave them money. Bree's task was to create a water wall to prevent the demons from escaping or entering the store but her magic went haywire and she lost control of it so she fought hand-on-hand, went against the order. they returned back to the fortress and Jude finally decided to tell her what rebel gods were. they were, like their names suggested, rebel gods whose intention was not known (maybe power, or wealth, the usual bad guys goals) and they hunted bree and ana for some reason. Jude and Hedy told Bree to go to the Seer's cave to find answer, somewhere under the cliff near the fortress.

the cave took her to Yggdrasil, the world tree and she met the norse goddesses of fate. they told her she could find answer in the Valkyrie's realm, only with Cade (because ana hadn't developed her power) and gave her a paper and stones. she tried to read the paper but it was in old norse and eventually she could read it. it told her to go back to the cave. the next day she returned with Cade and after some rock puzzles, magic swirled in the air and made a boat. they returned to Yggdrasil, meat the serpent that encircled it and followed the river until they arrived to Muspell, land of Fire Giants. of course they had to fight them but suddenly, Bree gained another power, this time, it was Loki's. she could trick them to think there was ice giants to get the fire giants off their backs.

then they escaped from Muspell and found Huginn, Odin's raven, who offered them a ride to a portal up above the Yggdrasil. they emerged to Svartálfar, land of dark elves. they fought Fenrir's son, some humanoid root monster, skirted away from Nökken's (sadako-like monster who drowned people) pond, and got captured by the dark elves and thrown into jail. but Mayhem, the pug of destruction came in with the key and let them out. they fought some dark elves, Bree spun an illusion that they were spiked and died to distract them and they ran out of the place and realm back to Yggdrasil. they met the squirrel Ratatoskr and Bree told him a gossip (that the eagle was hanging out with the snake) and after further manipulations, the squirrel took them to the top.

they had to jump off the branch in order to make it to the valkyrie's realm and they made it. they rested for the night, had some very boring and unsexy hot tub scene and 'only one bed' scene and Cade told Bree about his past, that his family was this crazy supernatural cult who actually didn't want to have any magic so when he developed his power, they prisoned him and tried to find ways to take away his magic, but he managed to escape when he was strong enough and joined a mercenary group. Bree faced some trial the next day where she had to face her fear/weakness, which was always jumped head on to danger, gained a wing that helped her anchored her magic, and was told that in order to keep the wing and removed the pain, she had to do more challenge to proof herself worthy, maybe by destroying on of the rebel gods' stronghold in the ether. they said that the rebel gods hated the dragongods because they were not pure and wanted their power. they teamed up, gods from across cultures and backgrounds in order to do this.

they returned back to the Protectorat, had some meeting because Florian the ghosty librarian managed to decoded the book and had some clue of where they needed to go. Ana, Bree, and Cade went to Tunisia, meet some archeologist who could take them to Kart-hadasht, a temple of some Phoenicians god, and a might be entrance to the rebel gods' stronghold. they rode the camel through the desert, fought giant scorpions, the camel flew over a ravine (it was half goose HA), faced sandstorms, then the archeologist left and they entered through phantem shield alone.

after they were inside, the buildings started to threw rocks at them and when they were about to enter the temple, the Roman god of death, Orcus, appeared and summoned demons. they easily killed them and he threw torture spell towards them but Bree, using her illusion, convinced him he was on fire and they killed him together (he only returned to some godly realm). they entered the temple, solved some stupid riddle (they had a fcking signal in a middle of a desert for a video call🙄), made a portal for backup, met hippokampoi, swam across the sea until they entered the inbetween realm, check the surrounding, ambushed a guy, he alerted guards (and the evil woman too) so they kidnapped him and Bree, using her illusion, got them away from that place returned back to the protectorate.

they questioned him with some truth serum and he said that he was their accountant. the gods needed money to wreck havoc on human and caused desperation so they would pray to them. he also said that their source of power was somewhere in the middle of the city, in an eternal flame that couldn't be snuffed, they can only transfer it somewhere so they would need Nix's help. they visited the firesoul, asked for their help, and promise to meet again the next day after some rest. the next day, the all met in Edinburg, the firesouls with their guys, ana, bree, cade, jude, hedy, caro, haris, and ali. the plan was, all except for ana, bree, cade, cass, nix, and del would steal the documents that proof whatever bad things these rebel gods were doing while nix transfer the magic from the temple while the others protect her.

they fought some demons, as usual, and finally reached the temple when 3 of the rebel gods came, including the woman. they fought but the more magic nix transferred, the weaker the woman got until finally, when Nix finished transferring all of it, the black oil on the woman body disappeared and Bree almost killed her when her face was revealed and it turned out, the woman was Rowan. but the other 2 rebel gods hurriedly took her away before bree and ana could take her. and because the magic that held up the city was already gone, the city was destroying itself and they escaped. they said that the city was powered up by Rowan's magic, that was why it felt familiar so their next plan was to find Rowan.

So... to preface this whole review, I am a HUGE fan of mythology and the like and I did enjoy that aspect of the book.
However, there was a lot I didn’t like about the book like the ease with which the characters went through trials and basically got everything handed to them. There wasn’t a lot of hardship and the molding of characters through struggles. Also, who gets a “spirit guide” type character for every quest?! And the male lead was flaccid at best. I couldn’t get into seeing him as a romantic interest at all! I like my men strong with leadership qualities but when he just sits back and let’s his girl lead with NO input whatsoever, following blindly and doing her bidding... it’s more like a sidekick character than anything else. Plus, how is she even interested in this dude with his limp leadership and we hardly get to know him through their interactions because they only moon over each other and don’t truly talk. Grrrrr. Frustrated with wanting to like this book but it falling so short of expectations. I really like to finish my series but this just might be one of those times that I’m totally at a loss as to how I can finish with the level of disinterest.

While Bree is still coming to terms with what she is and how her new powers work she has to do a challenge of sorts to prove that she is worthy of her gifts. Good thing she has some powerful friends to help her out. Cade is by her side as she attacks the first goals and it’s a good thing for her he is. There is a lot happening plenty of action and some old friends check in and help Bree when she needs them most. Crazy magic isn’t all she deals with for once it’s a good thing she listens to the warnings.

Great read with plenty of excitement and intrigue. The action never ends and the characters just keep getting better. Love this series as much as I love the author.

The Pursuit of Magic is the third book in Linsey Hall's fourth Dragon's Gift series. Bree has discovered that she is a DragonGod. Long ago the dragons convinced the various pantheons to contribute a small amount of their powers to a worthy individual. However, there were gods that did not agree to give away their power. These gods banded together with the goal to destroy the DragonGods. Bree knows that she is a target, but in order to keep her new and old magic from destroying each other, she must prove her worth by destroying the Rebel gods' stronghold.
Overall, this was a great addition to the series.

The first book in the series started out really strong even though there wasn't a lot of interaction/bonding between the main characters (it was more of fight scenes to fight scenes). By the time I got to the third book, I was struggling to finish. I love Linsey but I think her stories are too similar and predictable. Good for really really light reading though. Love the pugs!

Pursuit of Magic Dragons Gift The Valkyrie Book 3

Linsey Hall

In the Academy of Magic, we just finished learning that Bree Blackwood is a DragonGod with enormous special powers. These powers are just a tad unpredictable at times, causing her and others around her great distress. As the book opens we find Bree, Ana and her Protectorate friends facing down a bunch of really nasty Demons out to cause chaos and destruction. They are hired thugs working for the Rebel Gods, some really nasty dudes. Bree is using her water magic when something happens. It just stops working! Ugh! Not again!

Bree just wants to find out who are these dudes that after her, what her powers really are and get on with life! Oh and find out what really happened to Rowan, her other sister. Cade is there backing her up every step of the way, along with Ana, Jude, Mayhem and the rest. The path leads her to a Seers cave, on to Midgard, the Valkyrie, and ultimately a Stronghold between worlds, as she finds out just what her magical destiny really is. Now I am not about to tell the story, you just have to pick up a copy for yourself and settle down for a great read!

As with all her books Linsey’s story unwinds with twists and turns that keep you turning the next page just wondering what is going to happen next! We get to see Bree as she really is! Nope not going to spill any beans here! You have to get the book to find out!

Now I really want to get the next book, this one answered some questions, but as usual left me asking more! Linsey you did say book 4 is just around the corner Right?

I was given an ARC but the Review is voluntary and all mine!

This book holds up well to the rest of the series. There’s plenty of fighting, adventure, trials to be overcome, and so on. All of these are delivered with aplomb. The fight scenes are still my favorite parts of these books, and they’re one of Hall’s greatest talents. There’s a lot of Indiana-Jones-like adventure, and of course every good-guy group Bree comes across insists on putting her through trials to make her prove herself. It’s something that’s a bit overused in these books, but it makes for great stories and scenes, so it’s hard to complain.

The Pugs of Destruction get a little more involved in the action this time. We also get to see Cass, Del, and Nix come into things (as a reminder, it’s about five years after the events of their books). Cade is giving in to his feelings for Bree, although Bree doesn’t want to move too quickly.

We do get a hint as to what happened to Bree and Ana’s sister, Rowan. She’s been mentioned often enough that she had to show up eventually, and I figured that much like Cass, Nix, and Del, we’d end up with a threesome here. I still assume things are going in that direction.

I don’t have as much to say about individual aspects of this book as I do with some of them. Suffice it to say, we get more of all the things we’ve come to count on Linsey Hall to deliver. The female characters are strong and most of the characters have depth. Those aforementioned fight scenes are creative and attention-grabbing. There are plenty of dangers, and new and unusual powers to complicate things. All in all, a good entry into the series.

I totally adored Linsey Hall’s prior two books in her Dragon's Gift: The Valkyrie series. I’ve been looking forward to this third book, Pursuit of Magic, and it was definitely worth waiting for. The lead here, Bree, just keeps on getting better and better. Not only is she the same kick-a** heroine she’s always been (just the kind of character I adore) but now, finally, we know what she is: a freakin’ Dragon God (and I have always had a soft spot for dragons so this couldn’t be any better). If you’ve read the prior books I pretty much guarantee you’ll love this one too. Bree, supported by Cade (ok, this is already a wealth of riches: I’d certainly love to have a Celtic war god at my side), and her friends and allies have a tough path to travel this time around, that whole need to destroy the Rebel Gods' stronghold to keep her magic or else become a walking husk of a DragonGod, wishing only for death. Not lots of options there at all. It “looks like the fun is about to start” indeed, and we readers get to go along for the ride. Lucky us. Highly recommended.

Good

Now Bree knows what she is, she has to fight to stay that way- and that means learning to control her powers before they tear her apart.
As it turns out, that means a quest, and it just so happens that Bree is more than ready to begin hers!

This action packed tale allows us to follow along as Bree first gets on track to learn how to control those powers, and then as she sets out to fight the “boss” level. It leads to some huge, and rather surprising revelations that will definitely lead to change.

This book featured some more cameos from Magic’s Bend residents, as we,l as some new and interesting monsters- both good and bad.
While Mayhem the Pug definitely gets some star power in this book, she does have to share the spotlight with a number of fun modes of transport.

It’s an enjoyable, and fast paced addition to the series, with lots of adventures of the magical kind, a little romance, and plenty of battle action.
A fun read for those who love urban fantasy.

Awesome story. Ms. Hall brings a unique bunch of characters off the pages. The story moved quickly and in this series Bree has to complete very difficult and dangerous tasks in order to develop her magic to her full potential due partially to the help of Cade (tall, dark & handsome war god). Yes, the story has a touch of romance. There are many supportive magical friends and 'pet's'. The story comes to a comfortable HFN ending. I'm looking forward to reading book 4. Definitely, worth the wait and reading. The setting is in today's world but magic is well hidden from humans so it mixes contemporary and fantasy. I don't know how each book is as well written or better than the last but they are. The best part is Bree has 2 sisters so hopefully we'll be heading more about them as time goes on.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review

How is it that Linsey is able to create this whole suite of characters and gets you to love them all? This books begins to answer some of those building questions that have arisen from book 1 and 2, but it wouldn't be a Linsey book if you didn't finish with more questions than you started with. This part of Bree's journey sees her beginning to find answers and learning an important lesson that may lead to the return of... (I'm not going to spoil it for you, you'll just have to read it for yourself). I have to say I love Mayhem (one of the pugs of destruction) in this book, she is simply adorable but also feisty.

I'm not going to lie, when I started the Dragons Gift series, the first chapter had me really questioning whether I would even make it through that the first book. Yet here I am, 18 books and 1 novella later, and I'm eagerly awaiting the release of the next book of the series.

Bree, Ana, the Pugs, and the members of the Protectorate are a really interesting crew, I think their interactions give a bit more life and lightheartedness to this series compared to the Triumvirate books.

The addition of the Phoenician setting was really interesting, especially since it's not one I'm familiar with, and the greater focus on the Norse mythology is always fun.

Great read for everyone whose inner child meets their adult self and they both love adventures

This book really takes Bree's story and sharpens her character, the reader learns more about her and how life is quickly changing, challenging her constantly whilst still allowing her fun nature shine...... Also what's really interesting is learning how Linsey gets her imagination entwined with real places, events, mythology and her great love of archeology. I highly recommend this book but also the series, I've never loved a whole series like this author's ever, and I've read more books than I can count

I love this authors work. I love have Cass, Del, and Nix was included in this story. Bree really learned a huge lesson to wait to react or however it was referred to in the story. I won’t give away the spoiler that helped her be worthy to earn her wings. I can’t wait to see what else is in store for her. Poor Mayham, I love her little doggie character. I liked the introduction to the pooki-something. I hope to see more of this creature in future stories. I can’t wait to learn more about the discovery at the end of the story. Sorry again no spoilers.

ok

I was disappointed in this book because I thought that since the last book had gotten away from the characters acting like teenagers, this book would just be as good. Unfortunately, I was wrong. It seemed like the characters in this book reverted back to being as obnoxious as teenagers in their talk. I can’t decide if I want to read the next book in the series because every time I expect the characters to act like adults they seem to revert back into the speech of highschoolers. The storyline is good for a while and then, the characters act like teenagers, and the storyline goes downhill.

Bree is absolutely fantastic. Easily excited and awed as I would be seeing many of the sights (people, pets, plants, places, and phenomena) that she visits. Cade continues to be stoic and enigmatic. But Bree is slowly loosening him and herself.

It was great to visit with Nix, Cass, Del, Ares, Aidan, and Roarke: old friends from Magic's Bend.

I was provided this book as an ARC by the author; however, the review is my honest opinion.

Wow, you think you have it all figured out and wham, it takes a new direction. Bree has to earn her wings and anchor her magic. Along the way, she learns how many people will step up and help her, Ana and Cade. Bree learning a valuable lesson about think before you leap. Cause acting first, then thinking could have killed some one she loves dearly. This is a fun series, a series of magic, battles and coming of age.

An Excellent Read

Linsey Hall has continued the well crafted story in Pursuit of Magic that has been the whole The Valkyrie series. The characters are fun and exciting. The story moves so fast it can take your breath away. The action is fierce. I loved reading this book and was almost disappointed when I finished it. I am definitely waiting on pins and needles for the next entry in the series. I can’t wait to find out what happens next to Bree and Cade and the whole crew.

Am anxiously awaiting the next book in this series!! C'mon February!! Great job, Linsey!! Please, please, please keep them coming. Love the huge range of different types of magic and ways to use it. I have devoured all the books about Nix, Del and Cass. The books are awesome from beginning to end. Each one as good as, if not better than the last. Your books make my quiet time him. Thank you!!
