Jerrod Santini was an olive grower in Italy. He was also in search of adventure and sailed on the crew of ships. He became a ship's captain. To continue this life of adventure, he sold his ship and purchased a tract of land to settle on in what is now Georgia. He did not know that the land did not belong to those selling it, but to the Cherokee Indians who were living on the land long before white men came and claimed it as their own.

Good story, but surprisingly short
I liked the story, and what it revealed about unfair and criminal treatment to the Cherokee in Georgia. Jerrod, Italian former sailor buys land to settle, not realizing that it already belongs to Water Lily's family. When he is shot trying to protect her from two scoundrels, death is not the only thing to fear.

The historical facts about white men taking away the land of the Cherokees and mistreating them was thought provoking. I would have enjoyed learning more about how the Cherokees tried to solve the attacks or their land being stolen. Unfortunately, the story, though sweet and interesting, leaves a lot of open questions. Nonetheless, it is well written and was a good reading experience.
