Grandma to the rescue when Annie Rose is ill and Alfie’s friend Bernard is away. But the holiday friendship Alfie forms with Lee at the beach has its own problems...
Shirley Hughes brings her usual tender honesty to this exploration of family and friendship: another gem from the undoubted queen of the genre.

Obviously brilliant pictures as this is a Shirley Hughes book. I was surprised to see the beach so busy with children of the same age, not many tiny children, dogs or oldies (apart from Grandma). Holiday friendships! Crikey Alfie seemed much older in this story than the others....or maybe he just handled rejection really well. The homecoming and conclusion was really lovely.
