Alfie is heading off to the seaside with his grandma, and makes a new friend on the beach! But unfortunately all's not fair in love and friendship, and Alfie—with a little help from Grandma and Bernard—has to discover what a true friend looks like. A summer adventure which speaks to our experiences making friends from literary treasure Shirley Hughes.
Shirley Hughes is the illustrator of more than two hundred children’s books and has won many prestigious awards, including the Kate Greenaway Medal twice. She is the author-illustrator of DON'T WANT TO GO! and OLLY AND ME 1 2 3. She died at her home in London on the 25th of February, 2022.
Grandma to the rescue when Annie Rose is ill and Alfie’s friend Bernard is away. But the holiday friendship Alfie forms with Lee at the beach has its own problems... Shirley Hughes brings her usual tender honesty to this exploration of family and friendship: another gem from the undoubted queen of the genre.
Obviously brilliant pictures as this is a Shirley Hughes book. I was surprised to see the beach so busy with children of the same age, not many tiny children, dogs or oldies (apart from Grandma). Holiday friendships! Crikey Alfie seemed much older in this story than the others....or maybe he just handled rejection really well. The homecoming and conclusion was really lovely.
