Warning: extreme gushing ahead...

Another top favorite of 2019!!! I absolutely adored every part of this book! While I've enjoyed every book by this author, I have two favorites that I just love to re-read- To Win Her Heart and Short-Straw Bride. More Than Words Can Say has now been added to that elite list- it gave me that special reading experience I crave- great characters and (I don't often use this word) *swoony* romance full of crackling chemistry, romantic tension, and longing for each other.

Zach is a hero that sacrifices for others, he's a protector. He has a troubled past but has redeemed himself, even though he still struggles with forgiving himself. He's a bit like Mr. Darcy in that he's quiet and standoffish, but personable and charming with those closest to him. He and Abby were genuinely adorable when they engage in a little flirting and teasing. I loved seeing them warm up to each other so quickly and the laughter and delight they take in each other. A marriage of convenience that is affectionate from the start, they don't rush their boundaries but also don't keep their growing feelings a secret. Zach shows his love through actions more than words (although the scene where he uses his words is, again- adorable!) and Abigail recognizes that. Abigail also struggles with a trauma in her past and the way her former BFF and current archenemy is still punishing her for it. There is a strong message of forgiveness and healing through relying on faith in God to provide answers to our challenges that they learn together. I loved Abigail's grace and compassion, which make her a perfect match for our sacrificial hero. This is a story I'm already itching to re-read, and I highly recommend it!!! It works perfectly well as a standalone, but if you can, read the first book in the series since Zach is such an important character in that story and it will add to your understanding of him when you read this one.

(I received a complimentary copy of the book; all opinions in this review are my own)

This is the second book in the Patchwork Family series.
I haven't read the first book yet but with plenty of back story I'm not lost in the story but will go back and read the first story.
This story, it's just one of those books that make you happy sigh in delight!
How fun that the author researched this book and it's a real place. It was a walk back in time down the street visiting the lumber yard with Zach and the bakery with Abigail.
I loved this book, I mean really loved it, Abigail and Zach are such a delightful couple and you can feel the passion simmering in the background. Cheerful and humorous go hand in hand in this reading and will leave you eagerly anticipating the next installment in the series.

Karen is one of my go-to authors when I'm looking for a book that will make my laugh out loud, has great historical details, romance that is just perfect, with a bit of mystery mixed in. I think I've said before that I get bored with regular ole romance, and hers are anything but. I really enjoyed More Than Words Can Say. It was so fun to read Zach’s story, since I got to know him in a couple earlier books. He was a rich secondary character, but shines as the hero. Swoon worthy. Then you add this amazing heroine and her sidekick sister, and the plot is rich, the romance sweet, and a fresh take on the marriage of convenience plot. Perfect for those who love late 1800s romances.

I really enjoyed this book for the most part.

Plot

Think marriage-of-convenience with a twist. Very interesting and I liked the spin put on it. There were a lot of little nuances that really made the story feel like it was well-developed and deep.

Characters

Abigail is plump and likes food and is therefore my kindred spirit. I always enjoy when authors have good sibling relationships in stories, and Witemeyer wove a sweet sisterhood between Abigail and Rosalind. Abigail's sense of humor was delightful as well and I was snickering for a good portion of the first part of the book.

Zach is a man with a past, and while he's trying to escape that past and anything that may resemble it in the future, his efforts are for naught. I liked how loyal and protective he was.

What I Wasn't Fond Of

There were two things I wasn't fond of in this book.

1) Neither character checked if the other was a Christian before agreeing to matrimony (at least, not that I remember).

2) The romance was just over too much for my personal preference in some areas. Primarily where Abigail hadn't even thought of the marriage night, but Zach was definitely saying he wanted intimacy in the marriage (keep in mind this is a marriage of convenience and neither really knows each other). Although I did like how he thought Abigail attractive despite her not "meeting society's demands" for how women were to look. #plumpgirlsdeservelovetoo.

Conclusion

With plenty of faith and humor, this was a fun book and one I will definitely be reading again. I don't recommend it to readers seventeen and under due to #2 above, but anyone above that will like this Christian historical romance.

Cute! It was clear from the first book in this series that Zach has a rough exterior but is a teddy bear at heart. After all that he did for his "siblings", it was great for him to get an HEA.

After the loss of her father, Abigail is in a rough spot since women cannot own a business in Honey Grove. She sees her best option to continuing as a baker to secure a husband on paper only. Love this line from the novel "Choosing a husband was much like choosing a good baguette. One looked for a stronger outer shell, a tender interior and most importantly, a tractability of dough to hold whatever shape the baker deemed appropriate."

Sweet conclusion to the series. I look forward to reading the novella about Abigail's younger sister Rosalind.

This was my first marriage of convenience trope (that I recall). If anyone else had written all the steamy thoughts of this male lead, I'm guessing that many eye rolls would ensue.

***editing to say that what I called "steamy thoughts" by the male lead of this book were natural thoughts by a [fully red-blooded man's] man about falling in love with the woman he agreed to marry.....

Then wondering if "relations" would be included in their marriage of convenience deal! :)

The wording was plain but done in a wonderfully hilarious and classy way (I thought). But it may be too much for unmarried folks. :)

The author made it funny! SO VERY FUNNY!

Smile. Smile. Laugh. Chuckle. Repeat. That's exactly how this went.

I started the book with the audiobook, which is FABULOUS, while gardening. When I came inside, I finished it up with the e-book. I read this so quickly because I couldn't stop.

While this is not explicit in any way, if you don't like noticing and thoughts of "consummating" the marriage in a godly way, you won't like this book. This book is one part adventure and one part romance, 1 part day-to-day, and one part regrets/faith content.

It wasn't a perfect novel. I'll get into more details on my YouTube channel monthly wrap up video. But I immediately ordered the physical copy. That speaks volumes.

*very entertaining
*one of my favorite couples
*phenomenal faith content

*Updated - I reread this book by listening to the audio version this time. So wonderful! It was great to return to this marriage of convenience story.

More Than Words Can Say has skyrocketed to the top and is now probably my favorite Karen Witemeyer book! I enjoyed this story so much! It is book two in the series, yet can easily be read as a stand alone novel if you haven’t read book one.

I love marriage of convenience stories and this novel is one of the best of this type of plot that I have read. I loved the commitment that Abby and Zach made to each other when they did decide to get married. I loved the tension between this husband and wife. And I loved the way they cared about each other and wanted what was good for each other, even as they were still getting used to the idea of being married.

This story deals with being able to forgive not only others, but also yourself, and allowing yourself to accept God’s forgiveness for those things that need forgiving. There was a lot of character growth in both Zach and Abby. I liked them both at the beginning of the story, and loved the way they grew together by the end.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

It's hard not to love a novel that basically starts out with a line like this one - "choosing a husband was much like choosing a good baguette. One looked for a strong outer shell, a tender interior, and most importantly , a tractability of dough to hold whatever shape the baker deemed appropriate." After reading this book, I think I literally had heart eyes for days after. It's definitely one of my favourites from the author!

I read this book ages ago, but am now finally reviewing it; let me say, I reread this book so often I practically have it memorized! (Not quite there yet, but close ;D) You'll laugh, you'll swoon, you'll more than likely cry a few tears... it has all the Witemeyer trademarks that draws me to her books again and again.

I love love love that we see real insecurities and lack of self-worth in Abigail. Oh, I hate that the way she feels about herself, but I'm so happy to see these issues being addressed in fiction! I was getting a little tired of the perfectly beautiful, flawless heroine (don't misunderstand, I don't think there's anything wrong with that, but when I first read this book I was coming off a slew of novels starring those very heroines). I love that the main message isn't strictly about beauty on the inside either. Those two tropes are some of the very worst in my opinion. It just made Abby that much more relatable. Abigail had to learn not just to embrace all that she was, but that her self-worth didn't come from only inner or outer beauty. She also had to learn that her insecurities, if she allowed them free range, would stir up bitterness and distrust in her and negatively affect her marriage.

And Zach... oh my goodness Zach! I loved every bit of his reticent, stubborn character (this is becoming a recurring theme... apparently I've found my type!). I laughed and cheered him on at his frustrations and muddling attempts to woo Abby. I knew Zacharias Hamilton would make an amazing, extremely quiet but oh so swoonworthy hero the moment we met him in the first book of the series. His determination to make the marriage work and do right by Abby just makes him all the more appealing.

Content wise I would rate this for adults or those that are mature. It's definitely heavy on the romance and chemistry. We also see a glimpse into a character's past and the repercussions that go along with the bad choices made.

This book was really sweet. 3⭐️

I enjoyed watching the relationship develop between Zach and Abby. It was sweet and romantic. I also loved that they communicated so well and were honest throughout the story, especially given the very unconventional way that they got together.

This story had an innocence about it and was easy to read, with a solid message and a lot of scripture. Karen's stories don't have an overabundance of depth but give you just enough that you're satisfied.

I did find this particular story a little unrealistic and kind of abrupt/not smooth flowing with the intimacy topic—Zach's perspective was sweet but his directness about it felt a little weird—especially for not knowing one another at all . Neither Abby or Zach had even attempted a conversation prior to their ‘arrangement’ .

I also feel that sometimes Karen's writing for her male character's are not realistic—they’re a little too gushy and emotional when reading thoughts from a guy's perspective. It can be distracting because it doesn’t sound like a guy—especially Zach who is supposed to be this hardened, unemotional man.

All that to say, the book still called to me and I was anxious to keep getting back to it!
It was sweetly written and both Abby and Zach were really good people with great hearts.
Their commitment to their marriage and each other was admirable and it was satisfying to watch them fall in love.

I enjoy Karen's writing when I want a light but satisfying, pleasant read.

Okay, I have another favourite Karen Witemeyer novel. I had a goofy grin on my face for most of the book! It was adorable and I loved it from start to finish. More Than Words Can Say also had a few really good spiritual messages and swoon-worthy romance, and it was a pure delight to read. Definitely one of the best books I’ve read in 2020 so far. Hands down 5++ stars!

Every time I saw this book I was convinced it was Amish fiction. Which was fine since I will read Amish fiction when I’m in the mood for it, but I feel the cover does the story a disservice.

To be clear, I loved the story. Abigail is a strong and feisty heroine, responsible and with a strong head for business and with a heart as big as Texas. And on those Texas plains as she’s about to be run out of business merely for being a woman—and women can’t be business owners in Honey Grove—she solves her problem. A marriage of convenience to her her husband’s name on the title. Zach is her first choice. He’s the strong, broody type—a burnt cinnamon roll of the crustiest variety.

The faith truly sparkles on the pages as Abigail and Zach (and even Abigail’s sister Rosie) work through the throes of forgiveness, shame, guilt, and hope. They’re imperfect people, and there are consequences for their sinful choices. But they find grace at the feet of Jesus and no condemnation. And learn what it truly means to trust God with an uncertain future.

A note on the romance: it’s a marriage of convenience which in this case means there’s talk about consummation. Abigail and Zach are physically attracted to each other (as they should be), but they’ve waited to consummate the marriage until they’re better emotionally connected. But the longing is still there. Personally, I didn’t feel it was inappropriate; instead it was a sweet, healthy approach to desires within marriage and realising the emotional intimacy was every bit as important as the physical. (It’s along the same vein as Witemeyer’s The Short Straw Bride.) I wouldn’t hand this to a teen—it’s definitely a MATURE read.

But it’s a beautiful book—despite the misleading cover!

Content: comments about consummating a marriage; longing & desire; passionate kissing; one girl was exploited by a photographer into taking naughty photos (in her undergarments) for money

'While I believe in prayer and utilize that weapon every day, when one faces Goliath, it's best to have a rock in the sling. And he was the rock she planned to have on hand.'

Karen Witemeyer brings us another novel in her Patchwork Family series and it's the best of the series in my opinion. In fact, I think it's just my favorite of all her work!

Zacharias Hamilton is free now to live his life the way he sees fit. His adopted brother and sister are now both married and on their own and he settles down in the town of Honey Grove, Texas to live out his bachelorhood in peace. Until one day the sweet baker in town comes to his place of work and hands him a contract for marriage. She needs a man's name to put on the deed of her bakery so the town won't close her down. And he's her first choice. What? Zach immediately says no, yet he begins to rethink this, even though he knows Abigail Kemp only has a marriage of convenience in mine. He doesn't.

They marry but threats to her bakery continue and even her sister seems to have trouble surrounding her. Zach is not one to let those under his protection suffer, so he decides that his wife and sister in law need a strong man to watch after them. Soon, however, Abigail begins to think maybe this man means more to her than just a way to keep her bakery and she thinks she wants his heart.

I adored this book! Witemeyer's wit is such a fresh breath of air on the pages. I've watched Zach through the last two books and wished so badly that he had someone to truly love him for who he is. He is a true man of integrity, despite his horrible upbringing and treatment at the hands of those supposed to love him. His light shines through this book from beginning to end. Any woman would be proud to have a husband like Zach Hamilton. And the wonderful spiritual theme sings through all the way: God can make a way where there seems to be no way and He can use what was meant for evil and turn it into good. I've seen him do this in my own life. Well done!

*My thanks to Bethany House Publishers and the author for a preview copy of this book. The opinions stated in this review are entirely my own.

I was anticipating this book for a year since I LOVED Zacharias from the first book, I wanted to see him finally get peace and love, and he did get that .. but for some reason I didn't like many parts of the story, his character changed so fast that I feel he is a different person all together, I wanted the broody, lonely Zac to change but I wanted more from the story than this, most of the story just a filler until they finally become " husband and wife ", I wanted to enjoy the story more than I did but let's see what will happen with Rosalyn
As a side note, I never understand the story where the main character kiss and date and sleep together and they still wonder if they love each other !!! I mean, if you do all that and you are still not sure of how you feel when will you ???? really weird

MORE THAN WORDS CAN SAY by Karen Witemeyer is second book in the Patchwork Family series. It’s the story of Abigail Kemp and Zacharias Hamilton – the perfect match?!?!?!?

The story takes place in Honey Grove, TX during 1896. We find Abigail Kemp the sole owner of a bakery business. She inherited it because her father had no sons. During a time that there were laws on the books stating that a woman could NOT own a business, she finds herself with three choices: sell the business she loves and has grown into a thriving establishment leaving her with no means of support for herself and her younger sister or a home to live in, sign on a partner losing control of the business of which a male partner would have the legal right to sell it right out from under her, and lastly marry someone to have a male name to use but make sure he has no rights to the business. Wracking her brain to cover all her bases, Abigail writes up a contract for such a marriage and then figures she has three likely subjects to approach for marriage.

Zacharias “Zach” Hamilton has had a rough past from a card shark father to abusive grandfather who found himself out on his own a very young age fending for himself. Ending up on an orphan train that crashes, Zach finds himself responsible for two young kids, a young boy and a younger girl when he was a mere boy himself. He’s done things that he’s not proud of, but he did it for the sake of his “family” to put a roof over their heads and food on the table. Both are grown and with families of their own so he must not have done too badly – right? For once, he has no one to answer to or worry about. He’s happy to be a bachelor with no one to answer to and plans on staying that way. He is not marriage material – period!

Zach was Abigail’s first choice. Will her dimples, ample curves and sweet buns be enough to get Zach to consider her contract and say I do before her time runs out and the council shuts her business down? She’s sure of her sweet buns, but she’s far from having confidence in herself on the other factors. Zach’s initial reactions is to run in the opposite direction, but those dimples when she smiles keep drawing him back. He can’t have her taken advantage of by either of her other two choices, but could he be happy with a marriage in name only when she looks so enticing? After a bit of matchmaking help, Zach agrees to Abigail’s marriage contract with a few alterations – one being a good night kiss every night. Once again Zach finds himself the defender for his “family” and he takes that responsibility very seriously. Can Zach protect not only Abigail from the council that is determined to put her out of business as well as from her once friend who seems determined to undermine and ruin Abigail at every turn? Along the way, can he help and shelter his new sister-in-law from some poor choices she made in the past? Can Zach and Abigail find more to their marriage than words in a contract? Will horrible events in each of their pasts bring them even closer together when exposed and they see how similar they are to each other?

Karen Witemeyer tells an absolutely marvelous Christian story about love, faith, family, forgiveness and turning all things over to God. She has us feeling Abigail’s insecurities about her ample curves and lack of experiences as well as her feelings of never being good enough because she was a girl. We know of Zach’s passion for Abigail, but see his determination to do it right – to court her and become friends before he sees to his husbandly rights. We see how our choices affect our lives and to look at the real choices we have before jumping into the only ones we think we have.
I highly recommend this book. I loved it so much that I will be checking out more books by this author.

Fantastic Characters!

I enjoyed this one so much! Zach and Abby are two fantastic characters who inspire loyalty and bravery. I loved how they worked together, supported each other and rallied when things got tough. It was all about standing up, showing up and learning to love. I also loved the chemistry and physical attraction between Zach and Abby. It was real and made everything feel more believable, especially given their situation.

I read and enjoyed the first in this series, so when a book about Zach came out, I was eager to finish his story.

This is, more or less, a story about a passionate marriage of convenience. As in, the couple was attracted to each other before something made them agreed to a business-partnership-type-marriage of convenience. Though there was a non-romantic thread, the primary thread was romantic. And, yes, I’m not a romantic swooner here. It *was* sweet, and I liked both Zach’s and Abigail’s personalities very much. But for a single gal, the romance was a little too much. Detailed kisses were woven throughout the whole book (“acceptable” because they are married—but a good dozen or so written in detail about sparks and wishes for courage to do more) and then the romantic plotline was basically getting to the marriage bed. So yeah, romantically speaking, it was a little too over-the-top for me.

But writing-wise, this totally sucked me in. I do like Witemeyer’s way with words. Like “This man had just made a date with his fist.” Yeah. She’s very colorful in her writing style and I enjoyed it as a writer.

The non-romantic plot involving Rosalind did whet my appetite for book three hopefully being her story. However, depending on if her secret comes back to haunt her, it could be a very touchy subject right there.

Spiritually-speaking, there were mentions of God throughout the whole book. Abigail was, more or less, a strong Christian. However, it was when her husband said that she was beautiful that she changed—though she did say it was because her husband helped her to see she was fearfully and wonderfully made. It is evident that Zach got saved toward the end of the book. One of those subtle things stood out to me: before he “made his peace with God,” he referred to God as the “Big Man” (which I find highly disrespectful), but afterwards, the “Almighty” and “Lord.” To me, that was very neat.

I do find it hard to know how to rate this book. For the writing and spiritual aspect, I’d say a solid five stars, but the romance content was too much for me (so much so, that I really am glad I don’t have the paperback around for my teen sisters to thumb through) and I’d put that rating at most three.

*I received this book from NetGalley and happily provided my honest review*

More Than Words Can Say was yet another fantastic read from Karen Witemeyer. I started the book with the expectation that I would enjoy it, but it completely blew my expectations out the window -- I was hooked after just the first couple chapters.

The characters were lovely. They weren't perfect and had some things they needed to work through, which made them realistic and the story believable.

I LOVED the romance. It was so sweet how he waited for her to be ready for their marriage to not be in name only...and yet he only had one request that they end each night with a goodnight kiss. He was a great hero in the ways that he protected not just Abigail, but also her sister.

All in all, I give More Than Words Can Say 5 stars and highly recommend it if you enjoy historical romances.

This was such a fun story to read. Some parts had me smiling and other parts had me laughing. Abby was such relatable character and so was Zach. I could relate to both of them in some ways. I loved reading about the bakery, and all the baked goods. I’m so glad Zach got his own book, and I can’t wait to read Rosalind’s short story. This series has been so good. I highly recommend and I can’t wait to read more of Karen Witemeyer’s other books.

This was a fun little read, not quite the western I was looking for, hehe, I tend to go more for the shoot outs and outlaws I'm gonna blame it on having two older brothers. :)
But nevertheless this was a nice little romance read. It felt a tad drawn out to me, just a tad...and I'd have liked it to be a bit more focused on the plot lines because not all of them felt as important to me as I think they should have, but that's probably just me.
Overall, this was a nice read.

A book that takes place in a small town I actually have visited a few times and a plump baker who is completely adorable? Yes, please! For five of my growing-up years, I lived just a few miles from Honey Grove, Texas, but I didn’t know any of the history of this town that was shared in this book (assuming the research was accurate). I must say, I’m now curious and want to learn much more about this darling little town.

The fact that the baker wasn’t as petite as the cover indicated made me smile. Of course, I wish the cover designers would have chosen a model who better reflected the plus-size of the leading lady. Tsk, tsk! But the story surrounding Miss Abigail Kemp was amazing, and she brought enough spunk to the table that I forgot she wasn’t properly portrayed on the cover. (Though, that dimple on the cover model’s cheek is perfect and matches the one featured in the story.)

The leading man, Mr. Zach Hamilton, was a sweet surprise for me. I had really liked him in book one in the Patchwork Family series, but this story featured him as a lead, and that allowed the author to fully explore the depths of his character. I liked what I learned about him this time around!

One thing both characters had in common was a mistaken perception of their past deeds. So many times, we get an idea stuck in our minds about how things happened, but the perception for others might be different. It’s only when we seek God’s truth about it that we learn where our true mistakes were and what steps we may take to patch up any bridges with people and also learn what we can from those past events. I think this journey was well expressed in this book, and I love that both characters could figure out some hard truths in their journeys that can also apply to readers’ personal lives.

The unique spin on the marriage of convenience genre was special and neat. I liked that Abigail was marrying to save her business rather than to keep her family together or something. Not that I don’t enjoy that other type of story; I do. But this one gave more variety to the genre than many of the other marriage of convenience stories I’ve read lately. I enjoyed seeing the bakery play a huge part in the plot, because so often the leads’ careers take a back seat to the romance. Not so with this one! The bakery was front and center, and I rather liked that.

This story was fun, entertaining, charming, quirky, and challenging. The author’s trademark humor was in top form, and she dipped into deeper waters with the main themes but knew when to pull back into lighter tones at just the right moments. I especially adored how children came to be involved in the plot in a couple of different spots, and the references back to Zach’s siblings were perfect.

Only a handful of things were disappointing to me. There was one mention of a character swearing to the Lord. There were a few references to “big man” or “big fellow” when in reference to God. Those are very disrespectful terms for a reverent and holy God, and I’m disappointed every time I hear them, for the lack of respect they convey. The sensuality in this story was heavier than in other Witemeyer books. While it flirted with the line between chaste and tawdry, it managed to stay on the more innocent side of things, though there were a couple of moments that I wasn’t sure which way it would go.

I wish this series could continue forever, but I suppose I’ll instead have to look forward to the next series by this author.

Content: “big man” and “big fellow” in reference to God several times, one character swore to the Lord once, sensuality (flirted with the line but did not cross it), mentions of gambling (but not seen on-page)

I absolutely adored this book! 😍😍😍 I loved the characters. I loved the troupe. I loved the setting. I loved the chemistry. I loved the message. I loved the family. I LOVED IT ALL!

The author wrote such a well rounded story, I never felt like anything was rushed or incomplete. Each character was perfectly formed and every problem was faced.

I loved Zach! His silent, brooding, gruff self was truly hiding the biggest teddy bear with a massive heart underneath. He just doesn't express it in the same ways everyone else does, but once he considers you family you're locked in forever. He was exactly the kind of guy Abigail was looking for and needed.

Abby was a great character! She was strong, brave, gracious and loving. She had a lot of insecurities because of the way she looked, but throughout the story Zach helps her realize that she is beautiful just the way she is, she is perfect just the way she is.

Zach and Abby complemented each other so well! Not only did they make each other better, they built each other's relationship with God. They never judged each other, but chose to use each opportunity to learn and grow.

They both had pasts that they tried to run away from and forget, but they leaned on each other worked through it all. They learned that man will fail you, but God never will.

I LOVED that communication was actually a thing!! I have the hardest time reading and enjoying a book when the main characters don't talk to each other.
These characters did not have that problem. They never held secrets from each other for very long. They talked everything out and that helped build a foundation for a strong relationship. They knew that if their marriage was going to be a good one they needed to get everything out on the table.

Lots of healing took place throughout this book, and I enjoyed every minute of watching it happen.
I'm looking forward to Rosalind's story as well.
I rated this book a 4.5/5 stars.

If you see the name Karen Witemeyer, you already know that it will be extremely entertaining and sweet. What stood out for me, is the awesomeness of a plus sized main character! Abigail is very uncertain about her looks and I loved to read about that as many curvy women have self esteem issues. I don’t know about you but I’d rather read about real women than the normal pretty type with freckles. Also I want to try allll the bread.

However, I didn’t like how other woman were a little bit mistreated because they cared about their looks and looking pretty batting eyelashes when that’s basically the role society has pushed them in, leaving them no other choice. Karen’s earlier book A Tailormade Bride dealt with this prejudice against frilly women very well, and I get why it happens plotwise, but I’d have liked it more if it was omited, especially combined with the evil former best friend. But these are minor issues, I loved the plot so much it didn’t really stood out to me but I do want to mention it.

I loved Zach in More than Meets the Eye and he absolutely didn’t disappoint! He’s a bit of a bad boy with a big heart. And I looooved the romance in this book, there were many sweet moments where they opened up and slowly came to know each other. I think the plot was very original and the characters are amazing as always! Abby is an amazing person, very kind and thoughtful. And the side characters Reuben en Rosalind were very good and very real!! Reuben gave both ridiculous and awesome advice and his singing is adorable. I’m pretty sure we’re gonna see Rosalind again yay! I binge read this book in basically a day and am a bit bummed I have to wait another year for a new fullsized novel even though I know that is fast lol!

All in all, this is the perfect vacation novel when you’re not too hungry because trust me, Abby’s cooking will make you want to eat allll the pastries!!!

" . . . . I have to choose which voices to believe. I can believe the ones that tell me I'm not good enough or brave enough or pretty enough . . . . . or I can push aside that clamor and see out the voice that tells me I am fearfully and wonderfully made."

Abigail Kemp has been listening to the wrong voices most of her life, struggling with her self-esteem on almost a daily basis; but there's one area where even she can admit excellence; her baking ability is second to none in the little town of Honey Grove, Texas. Now some silly city ordinance is threatening to topple Abby's future.

Zacharias Hamilton is enjoying his life of freedom; his siblings are well settled, he likes working as a lumberman in Honey Grove, and he particularly likes starting each day with a cup of black coffee and two sticky buns from the "Taste of Heaven Bakery". Never in his wildest dreams did he expect to be propositioned by the lovely baker with an offer he could easily refuse; or could he?

This clever, and most romantic, marriage of convenience tale should have a list of life lessons tucked into its back pages, because Abby and Zach learn so much about what marriage is and what it isn't, that it's hard to believe they weren't meant for each other all along. There's far "more than words can say" about life, love, and lists of expectations in this lovely new story by Karen Witemeyer.

Here’s a story that is a good example of a marriage-of-convenience stories! How could I expect less, since it’s a Karen Witemeyer novel? Once again she proves herself one of my favorite authors with this gently romantic, humorous story of a woman business owner whose town board decided to force her to marry in order to keep her business. While I wanted to kick the corrupt mayor to the curb, of course, I was in the wrong time frame to do so, and the hero was a great option!

But naturally the independent heroine isn’t as easily convinced. She’s skeptical of men, especially after the town gangs up on her in order to give her and her business to the smarmy town favorite who’d rather shmooze the mayor than to make himself more worthy of the woman he supposedly loves.

There were a few things that weren’t super believable, but honestly Witemeyer is such an engaging author that I really tend to just swallow down whatever delightful plot she throws my way and beg for more. I just wish she could write faster than one book a year! I binged her entire backlist the first year I discovered her and I would do it again in a heartbeat.

Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for a free reading copy. A favorable review was not required. Review is based off a final paperback copy.

Ahhh this book was so so cute. My love for marriage of convenience might make me *slightly* biased. But Abby and Zach immediately win your heart.

I love how this book nestles very sweetly between More Than Meets the Eye and the novella More Than a Pretty Face from the Serving Up Love collection. You get to see Zach, trying to live a better life. We see Evie and Seth again, as well, albeit briefly.

Abby’s insecurities struck my heart. I struggle so much with feeling inadequate and unlovable. Mistakes weight down on me until it’s all I can see. I LOVED how Abby not only found strength in the man she chose out of necessity, but also in her Heavenly Father and what He says of her.

All in all a fantastic read. It definitely had more adult themes (because of the marriage angle) but it handled it in a tactful way that made me smile and not squirm.

This was not like Witemeyers other books but it also was just like them. This was a sweet Christian read with a theme of coming to God and having him heal you. There was a strong current of sexual tension in this one other Witemeyer books have not had. This talked a lot about consummating the marriage. I would say this is more of an adult read. There was also a lot of crying.... I'm not sure why this stuck out to me. You have this Lumberjack who rarely interacts with woman outside his sister and the poor guy gets stuck with a lot of crying woman:} It's a good thing he falls in love with one of them:} I loved the whole idea of how they got together a little too much drama for my tastes but it was fun to read.

This book is absolutely adorable. It's sweet, light, and sure to give you all the warm fuzzies. I've loved most, if not all, of the books I’ve read from Witemeyer but this one just takes the cake (pun intended😉). Also that cover? Gorgeous.
