Operetta
Since its first publication in 1983, this volume has been recognized as a key history of the people and productions that made operetta a worldwide phenomenon. Beginning in mid-19th century Europe, the book covers all of the key developments in the form, including the landmark works by Strauss and his followers, Gilbert and Sullivan, Franz Lehar, Rudolf Friml, Victor Herbert and many more. The text captures the champagne-and-ballroom atmosphere of the greatest works in the genre and it should appeal to all fans of musical theatre history.

I have been “reading” this encyclopedia of operetta for several years now (I’m the type that feels compelled to finish every book I start, no matter how ponderous). Basically, this is a chronological listing of operettas and arias (and ensembles) stitched together with a few threads of historical information. Will I remember what I’ve read? Ha—never—but as a research source, this book can refresh me on the minutiae whenever (if ever) I need it in the future.

Quite informative on the subject. I'm learning a lot about the various genres of 18th and 19th century light opera styles.
