I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, it may be aimed at YA, but as an older reader it took me away from everything, I was totally engrossed in Sparky’s story.

Set in 1932, Los Angeles, Sparky is alone in the world,her mum had died on one of her birthdays, and her cousins abandoned her on another. Now she is about to celebrate her 11th birthday, she has saved up a box of candy for the occasion, and walks to her favourite bench, where she plans to just sit admire the view and eat candy. Rosalind Barden brings us the mystery of a young street rat named Sparky in her YA Mystery, Sparky of Bunker Hill, and the Cold Case Kid. Sparky's life is never the same again after her discovery of the dead girl on the bench. This book is a must-read for any mystery fans out there.

Barden takes us on a journey through the Bunker Hill area of Los Angeles during the Great Depression. Her vision of the area brings to life in an excellent description of the city. Everything, from the rose thorns to
