There's something about the early history of America that I find so fascinating. What better way to experience those days but with true-to-life characters.

Hawk and Elizabeth Spencer struggle to raise their family in the midst of unrest and uncertainty. The Indians don't understand the white man's ways and go on the warpath. At the same time, the British are warring with the colonies.

Another battle also rages. A son whose father had left him at birth. When Hawk wants Jacob to return with him across the mountains, Jacob resists. A bitterness that has been in him for years, surfaces. He must get past it or it would destroy him.

I loved the spirit of this book. It's great slipping back into the birth of our nation. Shows me what this country is made of. It's a great reminder.

I am enjoying this series very much. I love historical novels, and in this case, Appalachian history is one of my favorites. In addition, the message of God’s love and His will for our lives are woven throughout each book in the series.

Thoroughly enjoyed this second book of the Appalachian series by Gilbert Morris and Aaron McCarver. The stories that are woven into the historical facts made it all come alive for me. Intend to read the entire series.

Solid 3.5 stars, rounded up to 4. Really makes you appreciate the pioneer spirit that started America!!! Sometimes it seemed a bit slow. I like the series but it's not nearly as good as Cheney Duvall, M.D.

This book was a little harder to get through for me. It didn't keep my interest as did the first one in this series. But I did finally finish it after a year or so of back and forth.
