Rivalry & Feud. Murder most foul perhaps. A friend’s best friend, about my age, 70+, was murdered a year and a half ago. Brutally beaten and strangled to death by hand. Teeth knocked out, ribs broken, vertebrae cracked. Patricide. The perpetrator was the murdered man’s 39 yr-old son. Beyond tragic.

Now that I have your attention, this issue of Lapham’s Quarterly is not nearly so ghastly. Of the 44+ issues over the last 11 years, I think L.Q. Spring 2009: Crime & Punishment, still garners

First time I've read through an entire issue of this magazine, because normally I skip here and there and get rid of the few I've had pretty quickly. Giving myself time to put it down and pick it up was the much better choice, and though there were fallow weeks where I read nothing, I did finish it and did enjoy it. Eclectic mix of essays, excerpts, original pieces and odd bits, and I think it's delightful.

Nothing terrible, just that the concepts don't seem to inspire as much thoughtful writing as others. Must rate relatively!
