Inside Electric Cars
Engineers are designing electric cars to replace public transportation, personal vehicles, and semitrucks--all while powered by electricity instead of fossil fuels. Inside Electric Cars introduces readers to the uses of electric cars, the hardware and software that make electric cars possible, and the future of electric car technology. Aligned to Common Core Standards and correlated to state standards. Core Library is an imprint of Abdo Publishing, a division of ABDO.

Aimed at younger readers it adequately covers the basics.

I recommend ABDO Publishing's grades 4-8 nonfiction series for grades 3-5. They are very thorough. They always go into the history, the science (if there is any), the current application, the future, the pros, the cons. Sometimes there's a little bias, but never glaringly so. It does admit that the making of batteries is not 100% clean since fossil fuels are used to make the battery, thus giving off some greenhouse gas into the environment. The only complicated part in this book is the chemical explanation about how batteries work. But I will never, no matter how easy the book, understand how chemical energy is converted to electrical energy.
ABDO places the reading level of this technology series at 4th grade. I agree with that. The problem is that they assign this book to grades 4-8. The large font and short length make it most appropriate for grades 3-4. Advanced 3rd grade readers could handle it, but no one beyond 6th grade would read this series. It's a toss up for my grades 4-6 library, but anything else by ABDO is either too easy or too hard.

48 pgs. This book features the concept of the electric car from its invention to today's models. It explains how it all works. I think this book would be helpful for students studying technology or inventions in Grades 4-5. Recommended.
