I've been singing in various choirs and vocal groups pretty much my entire life, and have gotten a good deal of training from the group work, but never took private voice lessons until now. My voice teacher got this book and CD for me and it is fantastic. The first half of the book is basic information about the voice, much of which I already knew, while the second half of the book contains a series of warm-ups, then a basic voice workout and an advanced voice workout. The idea is to warm up your voice and then, with the workouts, push yourself and stretch your capabilities. The CD has the accompaniments to sing along with and has separate tracks for high and low voices.
I like these workouts because they are clearly aimed, like the title says, at the CONTEMPORARY singer. It's hard to find vocal training resources that are not made for classical singing, yet if you're going to sing pop, jazz, rock, etc (my focus is jazz), you really need a different skill set than a classical/opera singer.
The warm-ups are helpful, and the workouts really are fun to sing, not just boring repetitive exercises.
