A best-selling core textbook for medical students taking medical biochemistry, Marks' Basic Medical Biochemistry links biochemical concepts to physiology and pathophysiology, using hypothetical patient vignettes to illustrate core concepts. Completely updated to include full-color art, expanded clinical notes, and bulleted end-of-chapter summaries, the revised Third Edition helps medical students understand the importance of the patient and bridges the gap between biochemistry, physiology, and clinical care.
A new companion Website will offer the fully searchable online text, an interactive question bank with 250 multiple-choice questions, animations depicting key biochemical processes, self-contained summaries of patients described in the book, and a comprehensive list of disorders discussed in the text, with relevant Website links. An image bank, containing all the images in the text, will be available to faculty.
I will read this book again in detail next semester!!! It was really good for the class that I just finish... Verbose but explains complex concepts well!! :)
The diagrams in this book are standouts. If you ever are short a pathway or failing to understand different endocrine signals link organs this is a great quick reference.
The format may be better for some (starting each chapter with several clinical cases, going over the information, and closing with a reconnection to the case), I found it cumbersome. It would often state the obvious or redundantly tread out the same information. While the little tidbits to the sides were helpful and the overall writing easy to follow, my personal take on the format of this book makes it difficult to rate highly.
This book is the best chemistry book I've ever read. I wish it had been around when I studied organic chem in the '70s. It repeats concepts and material to give you a good chance of remembering what you've read. The use of clinical examples with amusing names that help you remember the condition or disease associated with them is quite cute and a nice learning technique. The summaries at the end of each chapter are great for pulling out the main information (which the book presents in a very detailed manner) and perfect for review. If you are the type that can absorb everything in one pass, then this may not be the book for you, but if you're like me and enjoy a good dose of reinforcement, then it should prove to be an excellent book.
