It has been two years since the Shift—when most technology stopped working, and the laws of physics changed. Humanity has been brought to its knees. Like other survivors, Noah Henson has heard rumors of the Aelves. Among other guesses, predatory aliens seem as good as any other theory for what caused the Shift.

But for Noah, everything else takes second place to survival,

One-shot

Started and finished the book in a single five hour session. While I wish the book had been longer, I also realize I would have had to wait longer to get to read it.

There's a couple of familiar themes, but, to me, were woven together in a unique way that felt new.

Looking forward to the rest of Noah's story!

Interesting twist, good start

What I liked the most about this story is how it surprised me. As such, I won’t talk much of the plot. It is a light GameLit story, with an emphasis on a character with a bard archetype... and it takes a bit of time to fully realize itself. The story starts with an intriguing scenario - post apocalyptic where physics have changed.

This means people are back to something akin to Bronze Age tech, and running around with weapons and crossbows rather than

Fantastic spin on post apocalyptic earth

What a fantastic read. I'm normally not a big fan of post apocalyptic books but this merges that genre with gamelit and nails it out of the park. In the forward, the authors stated that the MC wasn't very likeable to start and I'm glad they did as I really didn't like him but some things happened and he got a lot better.

Fun read

As it is usually the case with these authors books, things start slow and gradually build to "can't put it down" levels.

A nice entry into the genre with plenty of action to go around.

It reads like a meta-settlement build novel, if that helps.

An unexpected start to a fun journey

So I was excited that a dystopian gamelit book was coming out. There aren’t many where the real world becomes the game world. The start was rough. You have a hard time liking the MC. And there was a few times I wanted to yell and scream at him.

That’s the thing though. The book gave me strong emotions and it kept me moving forward into a interesting story of prepping for the end of the world and understanding how you relate to others. I had a lot of fun disco

What would you do if you got a second chance at life? You find yourself in a world where aliens with high tech have neutralised electricity. No cars, no internet, no phones or hospitals etc!! This is what happens to Noah and he finds himself unable to cope. He can’t believe what a sniveling coward he has become. It’s not just aliens he and others have to cope with but inhumanity by their own people. Then Noah meets ‘Doc’ and this starts a fundamental change in him.
Noah brings out so many emotio

The first part wasn't really enjoyable. The second part had it's moments.

This book seems to focus on the human elements more than the actual survivability. It's not bad but I read hundreds of "the spirit of humanity" books, I expected more shown of the actual preparing and training. I'm sure other people would enjoy this, especially as the litrpg elements are small, and there are no tables of stats.

The second author seems to have taken Blaise in hand, and stopped his habi

I like LitRPG books that use the earth as a backdrop, and work within the confines of that, perhaps with some extra features thrown in to keep things interesting, and this book does that very well. I was actually surprised by the way the author handled it in this case, but I find I liked it, because it fit the storyline. It kind of ended in an awkward spot, but that's nothing new with books, so I suspect book 2 in the series will pick up and continue the story without any gaps, which should prov ...more

I really enjoyed this book I finished it in one sitting. It says they wanted a main character that people wouldn't like in the beginning but I never saw any real reason not to like the guy. The book has some interesting elements and the beginning reminds me very much of The Postman, The majority of the book has a feel more similar to a Light Novel series titled Me, a Genius? I Was Reborn into Another World and I Think They've Got the Wrong Idea! that was never finished. I also see what I think i ...more

What a start....many more hopefully to come

An excellent read with a very good plot line and good MC(s). I thoroughly enjoyed this first in what I hope will be a long series.

The horror of humanity losing all our modern tech and descended to our base instincts is all too probable and this book doesn’t hide away from that fact.

There a few grammatical errors but only a few. My only concern was the total lack of Merriweathers after the MC meets them, with them only appear

4.5 would read again, if my to be read pile wasn't glaring at me

*Spoilers*
I don't like, no, I hate Time travel, but it may not be a problem for others. Other than that, I find the MC to be incredibly slow on the uptake, which wouldn't be a problem, except that he is supposed to be incredibly intelligent.

I will say though that, eventually, he does come off as quite brilliant, most of the time, later on. Intelligent MC are my favorite thing to read and this did not disappo

Amazing but...

I enjoyed how well thought out everything is but I think too much is in control. Maybe for the following books you can have different perspectives used unless you plan on having the next book from someone else’s perspective, which seems unlikely since you have to have a protagonist who is bonded with an orb. Maybe you could have the next book be from Kakelck’s perspective (the Alien with the other half of the orb) or have the book split between perspectives.

I didn't have any expectations going into this book, if anything it sounded run of the mill. Boy was I wrong, I thoroughly enjoyed and devoured this book and cannot wait for the sequel.

It's a little rough to start but thats part of the point setting up the characters, and then it takes a turn I didn't expect at all but it was a good one.

Definitely going to read the next book and will probably give Outspan Foster's next book a try too. Blaise Corvin is already on my list o

This book is good, like really good.

The author has managed to combine quite cliche elements to make an incredibly unique story. The MC'S journey is quite satisfying to read along with his great determination.

MC was written well with enough achievements and failures to be both incredibly amazing and quite human.

The set up for the new world was done well along with all the cool characters.
The firestarters were cool.

This book has done an amazing feat of being UNIQUE.

First Song oddly has a what is essentially a prologue for about the first 1/4th of the book. That same first 1/4th is also pretty slow and not terribly enjoyable. It does pick up after that and become very enjoyable for most of the rest of the book. Due to what happens at that 1/4th mark, talking about any of the main plot is extremely spoiler heavy.

Suffice it to say, if you're reading this book and have low interest, at least keep going until you get to that point (you'll know it when you get

Good read

The first 10-15% of the story took me so so long to actually get through, I thought I would give up several times. After that the story starts getting really good and you start looking forward to what comes up in the end. This is a good book to set up the scene for what I expect will be a great series. In hindsight I probably would have waited for book 2 to come out to read it as it feels like it’s missing a bit of actual story to it but yet I would recommend reading this, just per

Great Post-Apocalyptic Fantasy

The book’s Foreword warned the MC would be unlikeable but I disagree. Just because you don’t like yourself does not make you unlikeable. That character development happens quickly and the MC becomes a strong character after the first quarter of the story. There is much good self reflection by the MC throughout and makes them formidable by the end.

I won’t spoil the story but the MC’s second chance at life takes the story in an exciting and unique direction that I w

If you are looking for a FULL ON LitRPG, this is not it. First Song has video game mechanics within the story, but does not take place in a game world. HOWEVER... this book is simply amazing and even if you are looking for a traditional LitRPG, I urge you to give this book a try. First Song is a VERY well written book that has insanely good character and story development. Blaise Corvin takes his time to tell the story he wants in the way he wants. I am only upset that the book is over and now I ...more

A truly unique story. It mixes RPG, post-apocalypse, and reincarnation into something new.

It took a while to find its legs but once off and running it was unstoppable. With a sympathetic protagonist pitted against an enemy of unimaginable power, we get front row seats to an epic David versus Goliath battle. Or at least the set-up to the battle. Because it's only just begun.

If the set-up to the main conflict is this good, I can't wait for the next book.

What a great, knuckle-clenching adventure. An unlikable MC that quickly turned into a heroic figure in a post-apocalyptic world full of dangerous Raiders and villainous magical aliens. The unique twists to a seemingly stereotypical dystopian story were not only well written, but hard to quit reading about. I enjoyed the preparations and personal growth Noah made when given a second chance. Exciting book that I would recommend for fantasy, apocalypse or even LitRPG lovers. Where's book two?

Good read. Dark but riveting

Tale about an apocalyptic shift/alien invasion which occurs on Earth rendering all electronics obsolete immediately. An inadvertent encounter with an orb from which the aliens (Aelves ) derive their power results in an unexpected result which may give humanity a chance to survive. Aside from some editing errors, a grim, dark, fast-paced read which will leave you gasping for more

Great Apocalypse/Prepper/Fantasy Story

This book was, in my opinion, hard to get into. I didn’t believe some of the other reviews, but I really did almost stop reading before 20%. The MC was really unlikeable... but the story gets better, and better. By the 30% mark I couldn’t stop reading, and before I knew it, I had read for three hours and finished the book. All in All, fantastic read from two phenomenal authors, Well done.

Very different

This book has a premise I haven't seen before or even thought would work. It's a bit of post-apocalyptic survival, a little RPGlit elements, alien invasion, reincarnation, Base building, and Super Genius child. This is really much more a post-apocalyptic book rather than a RPGlit book so set your expectations accordingly. The main character is unlikable for the first 20% but this is to give him room for personal growth so push through.

Epic!!!!!!!!

This book is amazing in so many ways. The emotions cover the whole spectrum. Nothing is far fetched. And the way this story has started out is brilliant. There is plenty of humour and I love the inclusion of a few classic games too. I also enjoy the way this book doesn't rely super heavily on a game ui to explain everything, not does the MC have an all knowing mentality. I like that we learn as he learns. I can't wait for the next book

Great plot very original

The forward stated there ideas of the book. One of the main character that's not likeable at first. The almost did to good of a job, I almost stop reading. However but chapter ten (1/3) the plot twist happens that blow me away. So keep reading if you getting tried same plots just different shades. I love the planning or prepping in stories and this had them in full.

Satisfaction, Suspense, and all around Awesomeness

The story balances deep personal self finding with witty preparation and triple A action. This author has earned yet another victory in writing epic stories. While you wait on the sequel read their other titles like Nora Hazzard and Delvers LLC. Also available on Audible.

Get past 25%

I didn’t think I was going to like this book, but then I hit the 25% mark it it twisted in an AMAZING way. I do wish that the whole orb thing though has been changed to something else. Way too similar to Delvers LLC. This was way more gamelit than LitRPG. Think The Wandering Inn.

Awesome story

Okay so huge fan of both these authors especially Blaise Corvin. This was a good first book the series. The only thing I didn't like was just how much introspection there was in the beginning, it was necessary but still took me a while to get through. Can't wait for the next book though now that the stage is set.

Blaise Corvin served in the US Army in several roles. He has seen the best and the worst that humanity has to offer. He is a sucker for any hobby involving weapons, art, or improv.
