Written by an acknowledged master of comedy, this study reflects on the nature of humour and the functions it serves. Why do we laugh? What are we to make of the sheer variety of laughter, from braying and cackling to sniggering and chortling? Is humour

This book was written for Terry Eagleton by Terry Eagleton. For a true understanding one must have a familiarity of philosophy (doctorate?), worked in the field of psychology (more doctorates?) for at least a lifetime and be Terry Eagleton.
A tough read for a layman such as myself. Every other page left me wondering if I should take a course in philosophy or read everything referred to in the notes. A common theme among contemporary philosophers summarizing a subject. A tough feat Im sure. The

A pompous and tedious explanation of theories of comedy. I battled on until Hegel made an appearance. Horrible.

Terry Eagleton is one of my favourite authors, particularly his writing in the London Review of Books, which has informed my own writing style, or at least my aims. I like his wit and erudition and much of his politics, although I baulk a little at his emphasis on Marx and Freud.

I buy his books as they come out and begin them with great interest; recently though, I've stopped part way with the last few, for various reasons. This latest one, although a completed read, contains some of the

It ended up being more technical than I expected - but there were some interesting points on the history of humour and the evolution over time. Plus there were a few mentions of the cultural differences that factor into humour, and that was super interesting.

A philosophical look into the theories of humor and examining what it is. Dissecting jokes has never been so interesting. It kills as a book on humor.

...more

If brevity is indeed the soul of wit, this is possibly the longest 170-page book I've ever read. Much of it reminded me of a meticulously researched term paper for a 10th-grade honors humanities course; heavy on the citations and reports on what others thought but seemingly little original thought. Moreover, at times it seems that Eagleton annoying added a fourth or a fifth element to almost every series just to stretch the word count. The book's saving grace is its examples of humor, some which ...more

Quite ambivalent about this work of Eagleton. We are offered a broad spectrum of theories and of historical poetics of humour, which is certainly not an easy feat to compile. Sometimes Eagleton loses track, which at times leads to tedious reading and at others to truly insightful observations. The author seems to reach the limits of his unquestionable skills as a rhetorician: though he tries to make his reader have a good laugh, he only succeeds in this regard when summarising existing jokes or ...more

If you havent spent a good deal of time reading literary criticism, and by good deal of time I mean an insane amount of time, this book may not be for you. I knew Eagletons reputation as an esteemed literary critic, and had read some of his other work, so I knew this would not be a light read. However, Eagleton references so many other authors, I felt like I was reading an annotated bibliography at times. ...more

Decent overview of humour in literature by the best living Marxist literary critic. It's funny, sharp, and edifying, though it's emphasis on entertaining the reader takes something away from the scholarship. In that sense, the work differs from the more serious, academic Eagleton books I've read, but still well worth a read.

This book was written by the author for the author. No organization, very few points to be made, and no attempt at clarification or motivation of any central questions. This is someone's technical diary, not readable prose.
