(1923– 2003) was one of the popular Hindi magazine story writers of the 20th century and a pioneer in writing Indian women based fiction. She was awarded the Padma Shri for her contribution to Hindi literature in 1982. Almost all of her works are in print today and widely available across India.

She garnered a massive following in the pre-television 60s and 70s, as her literary works were serialised in Hindi magazines like Dharmayug and Saptahik Hindustan, and in TV serials n films.

Upon her death in 2003, Government of India described her contributions to Hindi literature as, “…in the death of Shivani the Hindi literature world has lost a popular and eminent novelist and the void is difficult to fill”

It is a heart-stealing picture perfect sun-weds-blue-sky kind of a spring day. I remember spending such February noons sky-gazing during my pre-board leaves and falling in and out of a blissful slumber hugging my Physics or Punjabi text book. It has been years since those times but till date, blue skies in the spring never fail to make me happy.

Hence, I decided to get off my lazy bum (well only metaphorically folks) and write this one for you. So, in the last two weeks, I went through 2 very different books.

I will start with ‘कस्तूरी मृग’ by शिवानी. This one is a collection of Short Stories like the last one of my Shivani reads. I wanted to read stories of Indian Purvanchal and Kumaon, and this one just got me that. ‘कस्तूरी मृग’, ‘माणिक’ and ‘जोकर’ were stories of more modern nature and are interesting to read. But coming to the forté of the author, ‘तर्पण’, ‘रथ्या’ and ‘शर्त’ are some stories from the hills which will make you smile and cry, and would steal your heart by the end of it. If I could fix a weather to go with a book, then today’s starkly sunny and colorful day is just made to read a book like this one. For taking me to hills without the motion sickness, I will give this one 4.5/5.

One of colleague from UP recommended Author to me after I discussed Anamdas ka Potha with him.
The Hindi of yesteryear's is a marvel and authors like Shivani ji are master creators.
This book is very simple with a story of finding true love and how things change when true love is found!
Need to read a lot from this author...

"कस्तूरी मृग" 30 पन्ने का लघु उपन्यास है और बाकि के लगभग 100 पन्नों पर शिवानी जी द्वारा अपने विभिन्न यात्राओं और अनुभवों के आधार पर लिखे लेख/संस्मरण हैं जो कि पाठक को बांधे रखने में सक्षम हैं।

कस्तूरी मृग अतीत के बोझ को ढोने को विवश एक युवक की कहानी है। रईस संगीतज्ञ पिता अपनी धर्मपत्नी को त्याग कर सारा जीवन एक वेश्या के साथ गुज़ार देते हैं। माँ को हमेशा तड़पते देखने वाला बच्चा एक केअर टेकर के भरोसे पलकर बड़ा होता है और सम्मानित नौकरी पाता है।

कर्म किसी को नहीं छोड़ता - पिता असाध्य बीमारी से गल चुके होते हैं और जिस औरत की वजह से उसके पिता ने घर छोड़ा था उससे बदला लेने को जाता है तो वो भी अपंग हो चुकी होती है।

सम्मानित नौकरी और धन वैभव के बावजूद अपने पसंद की लड़की के माता-पिता द्वारा रिजेक्ट कर दिया जाता है क्योंकि उसके पिता का नाम बदनाम था।

"समृद्ध वर्तमान अतीत के दारिद्र्य को भले ही पीछे धकेल दे, अतीत का कलंक, बिल्ली की भांति सहज में नहीं मरता।"
