Gillian Gilchrist has no time to rest after completing her first missions for Queen Mab and the goddess Danu. There is still the cleanup to do, and that’s how she finds herself following the trail of devastation left by a rogue fae. Somehow this one moves through the trees without leaving any trace of its passing, except for the tattered and bloody clothing of its victims. In the dark woods Gillian can’t tell if the culprit she is tracking is insane, sick, or simply acting out its true nature, but she knows that the only way to find out is to track it, capture it, and question it. Unfortunately, that means following the scent of the victim’s blood soaked into the soil.
she completed her first mission well and now she has a second one. a rogue fae is killing people and only leaving a trail of blood. are they mad, bad or have a grudge against others? how will she get on? See how she does
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Another wonderful entry in this series by Rebekah Jonesy, Clay and Blood takes off where Moss and Clay left off. We join Gillian as she looks for more fae who are running around the place unchecked, in this case.... well let's not offer spoilers, just know it's a magical creature.
This book has a strong focus on the development of Gillian's abilities and how she is deciphering, expressing, and reaching more of her potential. There is also a strong focus on her relationship with her ever faithful kelpie companion. Pitch definitely guides her even if he doesn't use words to do so and the relationship is very lovely indeed.
When I read the first book in this series, I thought you could divide it into two parts. 1st part was damn near perfect, magical, and the world building was something special. The second half felt a bit rushed though, because it felt as if Jonesy was trying to capture all the ideas in her mind. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it was clunky. For Clay and Blood, the narrative is a lot more consistent and there's a more even flow throughout the entire book.
The presence of magic in human settings is interesting and how each book will tackle this topic will be interesting to see. Gillian as a character also felt more consistent and Pitch was brilliant throughout. My only minor gripes with the book is the occasional grammar trips, which didn't take from the narrative and the inner thoughts of some people who had catastrophic injuries, which sometimes felt a bit odd. For me, if you have a drastic injury, the reactions are either shrieking pain or shock. In Clay and Blood though, some people were able to have logical thoughts as they neared death. This could be explained as a spillover of being exposed to magic, but without some sort of explanation, it left me thinking "could you really think ALL of that with that type of injury?" And that's it... Loved all other aspects of the book and getting to know the characters better, as well as having a lot of "aha" moments as I came across more than one twist that was pretty clever and kept me saying, let me read just one more chapter.
Fun, imaginative, fantastic. A lot of good to enjoy here so hope you enjoy.
Clay and Blood (Mab’s Doll Book 2) by Rebekah Jonsey leaves off not long after book one.
The creature feature in this one is a mad dryad named Kayla. While she’s not the main character, she is prominently featured and absolutely fascinating. Her introduction is absolutely terrifying but as the story digs deeper into her character, I came to feel sympathy for her (it takes a great writer to do that with their villain!)
As for Gillian she learns some brand new skills and grows in her fae powers. She is intuitive and curious and it’s fun to see her grow on the page.
As for the Pitch, he’s quickly becoming a favorite of mine. He doesn’t have a single word of dialogue, yet he still managed to make me laugh (squirrel!!) I love the playful side of the character and how good of a friend and mentor he is to Gillian
