Or is it something far more sinister?

After recovering from a serious illness, Ella’s husband arranges for her to stay in a picturesque Gatehouse nestled within an idyllic German village. Ella has been ill. In fact she was hospitalized for a lengthy time, and feels weak and even confused most of the time. When her husband suggests a trip to Germany, she jumps at the chance to go. Maybe they can put their failing marriage back together, but Ella feels her husband is having an affair. In fact, he only plans to stay with her for one day, then return to work. She has an entire week alone in a wonderful old gatehouse in a quaint little village. But....she doesn't speak German....and s ...more

While I liked the story, the protagonist was annoying, paranoid and generally unlikable.. The husband even worse.. I don't get the ending....

I won a copy on Goodreads..

I love a good ghost story - unexplained things going bump in the night, floating apparitions, the works.  So I was delighted to win a copy of The Gatehouse Haunting by Martyn Chapman.

The whole idea of living inside a gatehouse, is charming. I would enjoy spending a week in the house pictured on the front cover of the book.

I wanted to love this book. I really did.  The central idea is good, I just felt like this was more of a work in progress than a final pro

Scary

Had to read in one sitting as I am a chicken and did not want to try to sleep without the reading the ending. Would have stopped but thought it might be worse to leave it. Seemed pretty evident from beginning that the building/area was haunted and that her husband was at best a creep and a cheater. Felt bad about Bruno, knew it must have been something like that. Wish I had listened to my instincts and not started it, is story will stay with me for quite a while. If you like scary stori

The setting for The Gatehouse Haunting by Martyn Chapman is intriguing, an old gatehouse in Germany. And it's haunted. A great idea; however, there were plot holes almost from the beginning. Why would a husband allow his wife to go 'recover' at a rather remote place in a country in which she does not speak the language. While a good premise, this book might have benefitted from sending it out to a writers' group or as a beta copy in order to tighten up the story.

Was this book translated to English from another language? There were so many grammar errors and odd choices of words. That was distracting. The end felt very rushed and strange, lacking in a solid explanation as to how things landed the way they did. The writing as it related to the haunting activity itself was very good, but generally speaking I was not a fan of the story.

A picturesque gatehouse is less than peaceful. A woman finds eleven gravesites on her property which leads her to find that they were all murdered on the same day. As she delves further into the truth will ultimately change her life.

A riveting read.
