Matt Riley and Bethany Trent met at West Point when they were 20, fell in love, and Bethany got pregnant. Not wanting to make Matt choose between family or career, she dropped out of West Point to be a single mother. She also didn't want to live in Matt's shadow, and wanted to make her own life choices. Apparently, the only way for her to achieve this was to not allow Matt to have anything to do with son Caleb WHATSOEVER, even though he pays child support and by all accounts, is a great guy. Matt can't even tell his own family that he's a father.
And Matt just goes along with this.
It isn't until Caleb is 14 that he learns the truth about his father, thanks to some data breach in the military that uncovered the fact Bethany received additional income through the child support payments. Then someone starts threatening and attacking Matt, Bethany and Caleb. It seems someone wants revenge on Matt's father, Benjamin Riley, a retired general, by hurting those that Benjamin loves. Matt tries to protect Bethany and Caleb from harm, while constantly getting told by Bethany that what is happening to them is all his fault.
And Matt just goes along with this.
We all want our romantic heroes to be strong, stoic, protective, passionate and patient (i.e. perfect, lol), but author Regan Black demotes Matt from being either alpha or beta to total eunuch. No matter how fucking awful this bitch Bethany is to him, he just keeps on taking it. "Never see my son for 14 years, never tell anyone I know about him ever - sounds like a good deal to me!" Really, Matt? Why on EARTH would he go along with this? He likes to remind Bethany that he could have been awful and challenged Bethany for visitation rights, like this is a good thing. Um, no, Matt. You're a decent, stand-up guy. Bethany knows you're a decent stand-up guy. Her stipulations are grotesque and make no sense. It is your RIGHT to have some sort of visitation agreement in place.
I couldn't get past it. Bethany's selfishness denied her son access to a father who wanted him for 14 years! It's repugnant. And Matt isn't much better. Is he that enthralled by Bethany's magic vagina that he'd completely castrate himself to go along with her unfair and outrageous decisions? (The fact that Caleb mostly accepts their decisions was disappointing. He should have emancipated himself pronto.) Bethany keeps treating Matt like shit for the entirety of the book. Basically imagine a guy begging a woman to love him and be nice to him for 280 pages and her just throwing it back in his face and you might have some idea how stomach-churning this was to read.
The suspense element? Absolutely dead on arrival. We don't know who is targeting the Rileys and we never find out. This is despite at one point being told that the bad guy's grunts had given him up. The character of Alex even says, "They did flip on the man who hired them." Just a few pages later, the anonymous bad guy is relieved because his grunts didn't have any information that would give authorities any leads. Huh? That's just flat-out bad writing. Basically, by the end of this book, we have no idea why the fuck all this even happened in the first place. And Bethany and Matt don't do anything to get to the bottom of who's stalking them - other people off the page are doing the investigating. All our h and h do is rehash why Bethany would never let Matt see Caleb and Matt repeatedly capitulating and telling Bethany she made the right choice.
Blech.
I don't know why I gave this book the honour of even finishing it.

Bethany Trent, in her capacity of contracts officer for the federal government, was aware of a security breach in the military personnel’s records. When she picked up her mail that Monday, she expected news about developments in the matter, not an anonymous threat. She was now positive that it w the time for her fourteen year-old son Caleb to meet his father: Major Matt Riley. Meanwhile in Washington, DC, Matt was with his superior when they are almost run over by a car and a baseball is thrown at them inscribed with the words: “You will pay”. Almost no one knows that Bethany, Caleb, and Matt are family. Are the events connected, who would want to hurt them, and mostly why?
Regan Black is up to her old tricks, meaning a fabulous intrigue and a swoony romance, and such great writing! I don’t believe I’ve ever read a story quite like A SOLDIER’S HONOR, and it would make a terrific movie. I was on board right from Chapter 1, where the author cleanly established the suspense and the characters. I was ecstatic that this was far from your typical secret baby trope: Matt already knew he had a son. The reasons for Matt’s and Bethany’s estrangement, while heartbreaking, were logical, reasonable, and nothing like what we usually see. Regan Black can spin a suspense story with the best of them – and boy, that ending sure demonstrates that! – but the plot for A SOLDIER’S HONOR goes way beyond what we are used to in this genre, because of the sheer ingenuity and innovativeness. The romance is at the forefront, while the mystery ties everything together, and the whole is admirably well balanced. Although the happily ever after is a fact, the suspense arc is not over yet. I hope that the future book(s) will feature Major Alex Gadsden – Matt’s best friend – because I just about fell head over heels in love with him!

Excellent book

An emotional and inspirational family drama in the middle of an intense hunt for revenge from a savage culprit who likes to hang back and makes others deliver his evil intentions, malice, and torture.
I have been reading Regan Black's stories for a few years now, and I can honestly say, there's not a one that I have not liked but enjoyed them all immensely. The stories have passion, tension, and deep emotions. The characters have this deep maturity, wisdom, honor, and sense of right and wrong that stands out within the hundreds of romance novels I have read. To say that A Soldier's Honor is most likely my favorite book of hers so far gives you now a better sense how much I actually enjoyed this story.
I loved the characters, respected the tough choices they had to make, the sacrifices they had made, and how despite all, they managed to hold on to kindness, gentleness, amicability and loving feels towards each other, and it just made me appreciate them so much more.
The way Major Matt Riley and his ex, Bethany Trent handle the whole situation, of their past, of their present challenges, of their son, of the danger they are facing, and the family drama that is developing --- It is a roll-a-coaster of emotions, there is more angst than I expected, the feels going from elation to resentment to fear and then to the real danger to their lives and future. It is a story that I didn't want to put down and wanted to linger within, in that enchanted world that the author had created.
The families, their interactions, the drama between Matt and Bethany, their past, how they handled the secret baby in a refreshingly different way, it is all heartfelt with such raw beauty and realistic feel that I wanted to inhale the tale while savoring each moment.
With everyone's personal and family life imbalanced with the secrets coming out, the constant danger on the edge of the reality, and how the reader is more aware of it than the characters cause the evil, revengeful mastermind has his own voice and point of view, gives the already amazing story another dimension that just blew me away.
I loved every moment and absolutely everything about this book, what a way to end the year's reading with an intense, explosive way, and can't wait to see where the author will take us with this new intriguing and emotional series where danger will come up, close, and personal for the Riley family.

This is book one in the Riley Code series, and it's off to a good start. Matt Riley, the oldest of the Riley children, met Bethany Trent when they were both at West Point as cadets. They were young when Bethany fell pregnant, and instead of having them both thrown out of the academy she chose to move to another school and raise the baby as a solo parent. Matt has known all along about Caleb and has been drip fed information about him as he's grown, but Bethany has always made it clear that she was putting Matt's career in the military first and that she would raise Caleb alone.
When a hacker starts sending them both threatening messages about exposing Caleb's existence, Matt and Bethany know it's time to tell him about Matt. But Caleb already knows; the hacker clued him in with anonymous photographs. Caleb flees to find Matt, and then Matt realises that all three of them are being targeted by someone.
As Matt and his military colleagues work behind the scenes to find out who this mysterious man is who seems to want to hurt Matt and his family, he tries hard to make a relationship work with not only his son, but Bethany. He still loves her, and she him, but every time he tries to bring it up she pushes him away.
Bethany comes to realise she's done both Caleb and Matt a huge disservice by not allowing Matt to be a bigger part of Caleb's life from the beginning. She did what she thought was best for her child, and she was young at the time, but I found myself frustrated with Bethany and her actions. I could understand her not wanting to be a military wife, wanting to protect Matt and his career... but once he graduated, why couldn't he have been merged into Caleb's life then? And even when she knows how Matt feels about her, that he's loved her all these years, she still won't let him in.
But that all changes when Bethany and Caleb are abducted and they have to pray Matt will find them in time. Will Bethany finally realise she needs to stop hiding her feelings and admit Matt has always been the only man for her? Will Matt finally get the family he's always wanted? You'll find out by the end of this book... and there's clearly more books planned in the series, if the ending is anything to go by! An enjoyable read if you like romantic suspense.

Major Matt Riley knows that he's a father but he never met his son. He honored the wishes of his ex-girlfriend. However, things are about to change when an unknown enemy targets the Riley Family. Who is doing this and why? Matt Riley wants to be a hands on father. I was amazed at how much love he had for Bethany and Caleb. Matt is such a strong character. He willingly puts himself in danger to protect his family. He's the perfect hero. Bethany is his match. She gave up her dream so he could follow in his father's footsteps. She raised her son on her own, even though Matt had helped financially. I wish that Bethany had allowed him into their life. She denied her son a father and herself a husband. The chemistry between Matt and Bethany is powerful. I enjoyed seeing them rekindle their relationship. Caleb is so mature and understanding. I was amazed. The action is non-stop and the family dynamics add to the emotional drama. The setting and the dialogue increase the suspense. I was drawn to Matt's friend, "Uncle" Alex. He has a wicked sense of humor among his other talents. Regan Black has written an outstanding story. It's a great start to her new series. I was pulled in to the Riley Family drama. I need to know who is behind this diabolical plot. I'm looking forward to the next book.

Bethany has been the victim of a security breach in military personnel records. Which, although bad enough, also means that she may have to do some very quick thinking when it comes to her son. Like explaining why she has consistently kept his father from him. A father who was a good guy and wanted to be involved in his life. But someone really wants the two to meet, someone with much more nefarious plans.
Caleb is a bright spark, so bright that he might just make his mother do a very dumb thing, reach out to his father and threaten the wrath of a mother scorned!
Major Matt Riley always wants to know his son, more than the paltry report cards and occasional photographs that his mother provides. He would have been happy to become a family but it seems with Bethany, it was her way or the highway and he settled for the little crumbs she gives him. He thought life was complicated as it was keeping all the fragments of his life separate. But someone is now laying threats at the door of his boss, or are they?
Not your average secret baby story. And I have to admit that I really, really struggled with liking Bethany. She grated on my nerves a bit. Yes it was her body but two make a baby and she just decided she knew what was best for her, Calen AND Matt. Lots of sneaky sub plots to keep you guessing and a great extended Riley family, including his bestie Alex Gadsden, who jut may be a chink in another Riley sibling's armour!!! So close to 5 *!

What a wonderful beinning of a new series--The Riley Code! In this new series we meet Bethany Trent and Major Matt Riley who made a decision 15 years ago that they have kept secret for all these years. But someone is very determined to interrupt it and expose them to danger. The two find themselves thrown together to discover who is behind this unseemly act on their family and loved ones. Will they be able to overcome their differences and the love that they still share after all these years.. As both of them are trying to hold on to what is really important to them someone is determined to make the family suffer, but who and why????
This book has lots of drama, suspense, passion, as well as intrique to keep the reader guessing who is behind all of it. The emotional rollercoaster ride is difficult for both Bethany and Matt as well. Will they be able to resolve their personal issues and find a solution they both want? While trying to keep their family safe...
The author has done a wonderful job with plot, making it a real page turner. The reader is cheering for the couple to win in their fight against the unknown culprit....Or will the issue remain unsolved and continue in the next book???

Book 1 in Regan Blacks new series (The Riley Code) I asked for an arc and was fortunate enough to receive. The book started off with action right away. (which I enjoy) Then you get to know the characters (except for the bad, bad, bad guy) as more things happen. I want to be a member of the Riley family. Maybe a sister, so I can meet Alex. I know our men and women who are in the service have a higher code than I do. I say this, because I wanted to smack Bethany. She chose to raise her son as a single mother. There is a lot of anguish and as they deal with issues that target their safety and some I think she brought on herself. Matt, seems almost too good to be true. He sees that he could have made different choices and does let some feelings show, but I don't know. That is a thin line to walk, noble, self sacrificing and wanting best for the family. There is a mystery - who is the bad guy, what transpired to bring this on, and there is steam when. I am hoping book 2 is Alex. This is a well rounded romantic suspense that provides true enjoyment, and if your like me a little anger as you want too smack Bethany , lol. All thoughts an opinions are my own and were unsolicited.

The story is okay, far fetched, but okay. Usually I enjoy a series better if each book can be read as a 'stand alone' and I just do not feel that way about this book. I do want to read the next book, but it is with the hope that it will clarify the behavior of the bad guy and the Riley Family. Bethany and Matt sound like a nice couple, well, maybe. Bethany and Matt have a lot of internal dialog about topics that concern them both, but do not share what they have been thinking for fifteen years with each other. To me it is no surprise then, that they do not seem reach a better understanding with each other by the end of the book. Matt and Bethany have a great sexual attraction to each other. Throughout the book the sexual attraction does not seem to connect to the emotional story of the characters. I admit I do not have a very good understanding of sexual politics, but in this book the way it was handled was uncomfortable for me. The bad guy has immense wealth, an army of people who will follow him to death, and has people all over the United States, but no US intelligence agency has any awareness of this guy?

This great series opener features Army Major Matt Riley, oldest child of General Ben Riley and Patricia Riley. He’s assigned to the Pentagon when a cyber security breach discloses personal information, for Matt and others. Two of the others are Matt’s fourteen year old son, Caleb, and Bethany Trent, Caleb’s mother. Only those with a need to know have been informed of their relationship to Matt, until now. But when he calls Bethany to let her know about the breach and a potential threat, he learns Caleb has skipped school and is on his way to DC. Matt has always wanted to be a part of Caleb’s life, but Bethany refused. And it appears he will now get the chance, because Caleb is being manipulated into seeking him out.
I really liked Matt and Caleb and the way their characters and relationship developed. Bethany was harder to like. Matt was able to match her stubbornness, however, and we ended up with a great HEA. The loose end of the mastermind behind the attacks on the Rileys will be carried into the next book featuring Matt’s sister, Grace Ann. I can’t wait.

First time reading this author, the hero and Heroine met when they were at West Point. He was following in his father's footsteps. They fell in love she got pregnant, she left the academy. The hero wanted to marry her asked her several times each time she said no. So felt she did the right thing, she didn't want to tie him down with a wife and a baby while he pursued his dream. 14 years later, she get a strange message on official letterhead from the Pentagon, their son gets clues on his computer about who his father is. The hero's father starts getting video message about events happening to his children. Who is the culprit, who is the target, what are they after. I guess you have to click purchase to find out😉😉

Unique take on single mom, Beth raising her child, Caleb alone (with financial support from the father). Dad, Matt, knew about Caleb but respected her wishes to not be part of his life because of his career. This I did not agree with because he is a good man.. but when you read the story you will see how it started and life moves so it continued!
I loved this story - only thing that bothered me was waiting so long to meet his dad. But it is an important part of the book that he is older!! Caleb is a smart kid & I liked his resourcefulness!!
Interesting twist to have father and son meet up - just before a crazy twist to their lives, worked perfectly!
Cannot wait to read about the rest of the Riley's!!

This story really was interesting and I had different feelings throughout. Matt was a great character and I have to say he had a lot of patience. Bethany gave me mixed signals. At times I felt she was doing what she did to help Matt and at other times I felt she was wrong with how she did things. But by the end of the book I liked her. Lots of action and an HEA. Caleb was also a great character and I really enjoyed how he reacted to the entire situation all the way through. I am looking forward to more of the Rileys and their stories. Loved it!!

I just finished a not-to-be-missed book--A Soldier's Honor by Regan Black (Harlequin Romantic Suspense) This is the first book in The Riley Code miniseries. I couldn't put it down and hated to see it end and the bad guy was not revealed, so I'm guessing we won't find out who he is until the last book in the miniseries. I loved the H/h, but my favorite character in this book was Uncle Alex. Don't miss this one.

Great story and characters. Horrible bad guy. The storyline is great and I got frustrated with Bethany not saying yes to Matt when she could. She has emotional fears she needs to work through and Matt was strong and steadfast. No hesitation. Alex as part of the team is a great addition. I want him.
I want all the books in this series and probably every other book Regan Black has written just so I can read them all again and again.

I loved this book I can't wait for the next one. Matt and Beth's love shined through even when she was afraid he was a great dad and family guy what she gave up for him was something, How Matt and Connor interacted was like no time was lost between them I am so glad they got an HEA all three of them becoming a family look forward to more of this series.

So enjoyable! This story starts off with a bang and never lets up! I love a good second chance romance, and this one was definitely up my alley. I liked the characters and could mostly understand and respect the choices they made. There was lots of action and intrigue which kept me engaged. I can't wait for more in this series!

A Solider Honor is the first book in the Riley's Side its a romantic suspense. I enjoyed reading about these two characters Matt and Bethany. It was well written and a page turner. I look forward to reading more of these series. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advance copy of these book and the thoughts and opinions are my own.

Well, Regan did it again. This book was absolutely amazing and honestly, I am not a suspense book person. It was well written, great characters, lots of action, family values and quite a few surprises you will not be guessing. I really am hoping for another of this family.

A refreshing read lots of action and romance . When it comes to your family you'll do whatever necessary like the Riley family does in this story. Sometimes you just need to be reminded of the love you have and how it's ok to follow your heart. I recommend this book

Well paced, with good character development. I liked that you weren't bombarded with all the characters at once but as the story evolved more characters were introduced to round it out.
