Joe Davis, humor blogger and minor Twin Cities celebrity, is very happy with his new girlfriend. Happy, that is, until a problem rears its ugly a call from the husband he didn’t know she had. And the husband is much less happy with Joe’s new relationship, as his many death threats will attest. The problem goes from bad to worse when the husband turns up dead under mysterious circumstances…and Joe is the prime suspect. Desperate to prove his innocence, Joe begins investigating the murder. As he does, sordid details of the husband’s tangled professional and personal life come to light. And other suspects the husband’s jealous brother, a pair of suspicious co-workers…and Joe’s own girlfriend. Meantime, the real killer is still on the loose and has begun to come after Joe. With time running out, can Joe find the murderer before either being arrested or killed? The things we do…or maybe the people we kill…for love.

This book got better closer to the end, but it needed a really good editor. No matter how well you write or how well you self-edit, nothing beats an outside eye (or 3 or 4) to pick up the little things you miss through being so familiar with the text, plot, characters. A good writer; this just needs that extra tweaking.

This is a fun tongue in cheek romp of a story. If you want a hard boiled detective mystery novel, you may want to move on. If you want pure entertainment that makes you laugh, groan, roll your eyes and generally enjoy yourself, this may be just want you want for a few hours. The action moves right along, as do the puns and one liners. Sarcasm is part of the scenery in this novel! Sit back and enjoy, just suspend your disbelief, and leave the skepticism at home. You will enjoy the silly.

I don't know if soft-boiled detective stories are a thing... it's not my genre... but this felt very much in the vein of Jim Butcher's Harry Dresden books with real life and a loopy circle of friends subbing in for the supernatural. It is a great porch/beach read - you'll have a good time and be looking forward to visiting this group again.

A quick and funny read. Light mystery with a group of characters that have "Seinfeld" quality to them.
