Mystery and suspense are always fun when you aren’t the one who finds themselves in the middle of it. When you are looking over someone who is responsible for catching the bad guy or reading a mystery and trying to find out who the bad guy is…those are fun! For Victory, this mystery just keeps getting harder and harder to solve. There are victims with two different styles of killing and they have both seemed to fall in her lap. Cresswell has a compelling mystery and first installment with Deadly Shadow that will draw readers in.

Victory McClane is on the case and this time, the MO is different. The perpetrator wraps his female victims up in bubble wrap and burns them alive. Such a sick and twisted way to kill someone, but Victory has a hunch that the way he kills has something to do with catching him. All of the other victims that were found have been credited to a killer known as the Shadow where he comes in and kills the victim without the police being able to find an entry point into their lives or homes. It is as if they committed suicide, but the suicides are virtually impossible with the way that they were found. Victory is asked out on a date by a suspect who she feels some kind of connection to and on top of that, her daughter comes into town and then goes missing from a club. She may find herself enlisting help from an unlikely ally in order to save the only family she has left from the Rapper.

Cresswell has an incredible story with superb character development, an entertaining mystery, and is chalked full of originality. Since this review is complimenting the audiobook, it appears that the story is well-written from the voice relay. Siegerman’s narration is impeccable and enjoyable. The character vocalizations are all different and her relay is easy to follow. If you are a reader of paranormal suspense, you may want to pick up this book. Since this is the first installment in the Assassin Chronicles, you are able to dive right in.

I am extremely impressed with this amazing start of a new series. I do enjoy a fantastic suspense, mystery book. Something that is different from my usual go-to.
The first couple of chapters, while I was extremely locked-in with the story, the audio seemed a bit fuzzy. I normally double and triple check my earphones when that happens, because I've had bad earphones in the past. But this time around, it wasn't tech issues. Maybe it was total accident, but I willingly overlooked it. Definitely a minor hiccup, but the audio was amazing after that.
This aside, Robin Siegerman did a wonderful job narrator. She was, in fact, a new narrator for me. I am always looking to find new voices. Robin was able to make me believe in all the characters and their depth, their growth. She read clearly and amazingly. Awesome.
This all aside, Deadly Shadow is a book to add to your list. Audio, ebook or paperback. I highly recommend it. There was a point in the book where I had to just turn off my device, toss my earphones aside and I went to hang out with my dogs. I only do that when I need to come down from an emotional roller coaster. Now, this is a mystery/suspense. It just kept building. But what broke me and forced me to take a break from my listening streak (I listened to about 2 hrs. without ceasing by this point). I just felt like my heart was bleeding on the floor because of the pain experienced by a family member to one of the victims. It was heavy. But I kept listening just to know that there would be justice and redemption.
This is an amazing start to a new series. I truly hope to read more from Kim Cresswell soon. Her style of writing is one to look for.

I received this book from Voracious Readers for an honest review. Oh boy this book was fun! Well if you like mystery and intrigue it was fun! We meet Victory, a smart FBI agent closing in on her 45th birthday, at the start walking up to a baffling crime scene. What a nice change to have an older woman heroine in a story like this. Anyways, Victory has been chasing down two different serial killers in Cincinnati and Cleveland for the last 20 or so years. The Shadow seems to be the culprit for this current scene - the victim lived alone and was found in his home locked in with no signs of foreign entry. The Shadow is the killer she has been chasing the longest - 20 years. As we go along we also find that Victory is also chasing down The Wrapper a strange killer that douses his victims in baby oil and wraps them in bubble wrap before burning them to death. As we move through the story we meet a great cast of secondary characters. I felt the pace of this book was good, I felt it didn't drag at all and I finished this book fairly quickly. It has some twists and turns that I didn't expect but that was a good thing. I want to find the next books in this series to continue reading the adventures of Victory.

I received this book for free. I am voluntarily leaving this review and all opinions expressed herein are mine.

This is the first book in The Assassin Chronicles. It is a paranormal suspense story where FBI Agent Victory McClane is investigating two serial killers. The first is kidnapping young women and burning them alive after wrapping them in bubble wrap. The second is killing his victims but it appears as though the killer was never actually in the room with the victim as there seems to be no evidence of the killer being there and the murders almost appear to be suicides. McClean has a tragic past - her husband was murdered during a bank robbery and she has trouble dealing with his death.

The story pulls you in from the very beginning. The characters, especially the MC, are well developed and this is a well-written suspense story. The paranormal aspects of the story were really intriguing and not overdone - it will be interesting to see how this aspect evolves over the series. The story is fast moving, and deftly weaves an interesting a plethora of events and connections. I liked how the characters realistically relied on each other - no superhero antics. I am looking forward to this series.

I listened to this book - I really liked this narrator and she used some interesting narrative devices like using effects to make it seem as if you are listening to someone on a phone call. You can literally feel the pain of the MC through her narration. The one negative - I was not enamored with her male voices - especially Derek, whose voice was very gravely [like a decades long smoker with a throat injury].

FBI agent Victory has been on the trail of the serial killer The Wrapper for years but has never been able to stop him. When his latest victim is found, Victory knows she needs to step up her game because he is escalating. his kills. Derrick runs a successful business, but nobody knows about his other job where he is a paranormal assassin working for the President and Department of Defense. When the two's lives suddenly intersect. suspicion and danger are the outcome.

I am completely intrigued by the idea of a secret branch of the government that uses paranormal gifts. I grew up hearing rumors of those things, like remote viewers and unethical LSD experiments that were all debunked, but I had to read a book that had a legit agency in work. Add in the police procedural portion of the book after a serial killer and there was no way I did not want to read the book.

The narrator used some interesting vocal changes for certain parts that I had never experienced before, giving an air of authenticity to the story. For example, when someone yelled down a hall, the narrator was farther away making it sound like it was from a distance. Also, when there was a radio playing a podcast or a phone call, the narrator used an affect to making is sound like it came from a radio or speaker. The one negative thing that I encountered about her narration was the male main character Derrick's voice, it was really terrible and gravely like he had a throat injury. Her other male characters were great, but his voice was my least favorite.

This was a very fast, engaging read, but boy was it way more depressing than I anticipated it being. The main character, Victory, has a very hard, tough life that just gets worse. I would like to continue the series, if there is more to come, because now I am invested and curious, but if I had know how this would play out, I am not sure I would have picked it up to read.
