Lights. Camera. Romance.

Jessica Quillen, veterinarian for the charitable K-9 Angelz program, didn’t mean to stumble into the middle of a New York movie shoot. She just wanted to rescue the stray dog she’d been chasing. Instead, she’s playing catch-up with her ex-fiancé—and the screen’s hottest action hero, Hugh Baker. The only man she ever loved. The dream that disappeared

Hugh is a very famous actor who partially grew up in the foster system. He has this need to prove that he is worth something in this world. That is what ultimately played a part in ending his engagement to the love of his life.

Jessica is a veterinarian who is down to earth. She genuinely loves animals and puts them first in her life. She also put her fiancé first when Hugh was an up and coming actor finally getting recognized for his talent. It was clear to her that she was holding him back and

Second Act is book 2 in the Second Glances series and a great addition to this series. When I received an invitation from the publisher, via Net-Galley, to read and review, I eagerly accepted since I enjoyed Second Time Around in this series a great deal. My opinions are my own and are not influenced in any way.

I thoroughly enjoyed Second Act from the first page to the last. Ms. Herkness’s writing is emotional and pulled at my heartstrings a lot. The plot is realistic and kept me flipping the pa

I liked Hugh and Jess immediately. They were both consummate professionals yet held a vulnerability that made them relatable. Their opposite lifestyles and obligations held a barrier that many would not be able to meld, especially with their history. So, it was fun to watch them, and their friends wor

I adore a good second chance story so I gobbled this one up! Hugh and Jessica are great together and their second chance touched my heart. When they were engaged when they were younger Jessica knew Hugh was destined to make it big one day. She just couldn't see herself in the spotlight he so desperately yearned for. Now years later he's a big a-list celebrity and she's content in her role as a hardworking small town veterinarian. When they are reunited it is clear the spark between them is still ...more

I must admit, I went into reading Second Act cold. In recent years, I've become a fan of Nancy Herkness and I know she's guaranteed to give me a story I will like, if not love. Subsequently, when I started reading Second Act I had no idea what the story was about. I just knew the story would be a second chance romance.

The beauty of second chance romances is that generally, at least a few years have passed since the initial breakup. During that time, the couple has had the opportunity to

Nancy Herkness brings readers another heart-tugging story of second chances in her newest novel, Second Act. I had serious doubts that she could ever create a hero who would equal Luke Archer (The All-Star Antes Up) in my affections but dang if she hasn't done exactly that with Hugh. And then, she went and gave him a heroine in Jessica who not only earned my respect and admiration but notched her own place in my heart. I cheered so hard for these two.

This is the second book in the series, and it is in the same world as the first book, but I don't think you need to read them in order.

I really enjoyed this second chance romance, which came about 8 years after the couple first split. I found the background to their relationship really well explained. Hugh's poor behaviour in respecting Jessica's ability to cope on the red carpet had caused such a rift b

Jessica Quillen and Hugh Baker were young lovers until the expectations of his job as a movie star tore them apart. Now she is a vet for an animal charity and he is world famous. They run into each other again after several years when Jessica accidentally ruins a shoot by chasing a stray dog across the alley where they are filming. Hugh realises that he made a huge mistake and will do everything he can to win Jessica back.

Heartache, heat and happiness; Nancy Herkness brings them all!

What starts as a fated reunion quickly moved to a blazing affair for the dashing movie star High Baker and his ex-fiance Veterinarian Jessica Quillen.

Old fears come back to haunt them when her life needs her and his life shadows their relationship in ways she forgot could happen.

I love the way Nancy immersed High into Jessica's world. And how valiantly Jess melded herself into his to prove to him that she could. It takes a near trage

Really interesting concept of a movie star and a veterinarian. They were engaged before he became famous but she broke up with him because he was destined to public and she didn't see her adapting. Eight years later they meet up and chemistry still there.
It's not got a lot of Hugh's POV so I really don't feel the chemistry 100%....but there are some interesting veterinary scenes along with movie making scenes. Fun.
Thank you to NetGalley for giving me an ARC of this book. The review below is entirely my own opinion.

This is a second-chance, slow-burn, celebrity romance. While that normally sounds like a recipe for a book I tend to love, I just wasn’t connecting to either of the MC’s.

I thought the story was ok but at the book’s end, I feel like I’m still left wondering and struggling with the strength and forever-ness of their relationship.

Second Chance is cheesy over the top story that lacks any conflict that is needed in someway to drive a the story forward.

The writing and story line isn't bad it just unbelievable as well as a slow pace story that drags on though out the book.

Thank you Netgalley and the publisher Montlake Romance for the advance copy of Nancy Herkness Second Act.

M/F Romance - Second chance
I was given this book for an honest review by Wicked Reads.

Jessica and Hugh were hot and heavy once before. When Jessica realized that Hugh was destined to be famous, she knew that in order for him to follow his own dreams, she had to break her own heart. What she didn't foresee were the after effects - Hugh shut her completely out.

Now, running her own vet practice, she also is still a bleeding heart for all animal

This is a second chance story. Hugh and Jessica broke their engagement 8 years ago; a rising actor and a commited veterinarian that were separated for their life choices. But now when Hugh, a successful action movie star, sees her in N.Y. still helping animals start to think that perhaps this time will be different. Or maybe not.

I like this kind of stories where couples give themselves a second chance
I read the first book in this series and liked it well enough, but didn't love it. Happily, this second book, which I won in a GR contest, worked much better for me. This is a second chance romance. I love this trope if it's done well, and the characters have truly changed enough, or grown enough that they can acknowledge and overcome the mistakes they made the first time. We all grow and learn, so I find it hopeful but also realistic that two people who previously couldn't make it work can come ...more

Eight years ago, Jessica Quillen and Hugh Baker were engaged to be married, but her insecurities and his painful memories drove them apart. Hugh is now a celebrated movie star and Jess is a beloved vet in South Harlem where she is in charge of the George Washington After-School care center. Jessica Quillen is a very dedicated verterinarian. Her clinic in Lower Harlem is always very busy. This means she really doesn't have time for much of a social life and she is quite content with the status quo until... while trying to catch a pregnant stray dog she literally runs into her ex-fiance who happens to be in New York filming his latest movie. Her ex-fiance happens to be film super star Hugh Baker. Jessica has never stopped loving Hugh. Actually her solid love for Hugh is why she broke ...more

While billionaire stories usually are not my thing, simply because I find it hard to be impressed by the super rich and famous and the contrast between them and everyday people just doesn’t hold my interest, I thoroughly loved “Second Act". The reason why “Second Act" works for me is not so much because of its hero but its heroine. Finally, a woman who stands on her own two feet and it seems to be less HER who needs HIM (with all his millions) but it seemed more like that he needs her and THAT I ...more

Nancy Herkness does it again. Fast-paced, emotional, plenty of conflict, fiery, and sweet.

In a collision of the past with the future, Jessica and Hugh literally collide into each other in a New York City back alley, after a broken engagement eight years prior. For both, the love never faded. But the hurdles that broke them up in the first place still remain. With careers set and wisdom gained, Herkness shows us the true meaning of finding a second chance, in an emotional and redemptive journey t

Second Chance at Love

In illumination, Hugh Baker with strikingly gorgeous turquoise coloured eyes is a handsome charismatic alpha male. He is a wealthy swoon worthy actor who has the world and me at his feet. He can have any woman he want but he only seems to only want one. The one who had walked away from their engagement nine years previously.

Beautiful and hardworking veterinarian Jessica Quillen is now the same woman who unintentionally invades Hugh's film set. She is chasing a stray dog and

I love a good second chance romance - throw in a sexy action star and a dedicated veterinarian and you get Second Act which may be my favorite Nancy Herkness romance to date.

Hugh Baker is probably the sexiest action star on the planet. Eight years before he was just an up and coming actor trying to make it and that's when Jessica Quillan knew him. Knowing that in order for Hugh to get everything he wants and deserves, Jessica did the hardest thing and walked away from him. Now 8 years later she

Hugh Baker is one hot commodity in Hollywood. It’s been a long road but one he was able to succeed in. His one regret is the woman he’s never stopped loving. Once he made it big, he didn’t understand that Jessica’s career as a veterinarian, was just as important. So she divorced him and moved back to New York. Now Hugh is shooting a film in her city and she actually walks into his set. When he can’t stop thinking about her, Hugh asks her out. Abandoned by his mother and raised in the foster care ...more

Now, Jessica is a veterinarian with a small practice in South Harlem. She also volunteers at the Carver Center with their K-9 Angelz program. Hugh is a Hollywood movie star filming his

A good romance

Another good read in this series Hugh is an actor at the top of his career he is really good looking, women swoon over him and men want to be him, he stars in a series of block busting spy films. Jess is a truly compassionate veterinary surgeon who goes out of her way to provide care for all animals she also helps out with the k9 angels at the Carver centre and was once engaged to Hugh and loved him so much she let him go in order for him to be successful in his career. I received an ARC from Net Galley in exchange for an honest review.

I've enjoyed most of Nancy Herkness's other books, and as I read this I realized that I missed the first one in the Second Glances series. They actually spin off of her other series, with having been introduced in them and their characters now being side, supporting roles for this series. SECOND ACT is a delightfully enjoyable read! I was intrigued by the story from the beginning and found the characters to be believable and easy to like.

The idea of a second chance to get "it" right appeals to me and for Jess and Hugh their second chance is what those chances are all about: highs, lows, bumpy roads, smooth roads, a sense of satisfaction, always learning, accepting, compromising and understanding. The blend of these aspects are well presented throughout the story and Ms Herkness m
