In Purgatory bay, author Bryan Gruley has created a deliciously intricate and complex puzzle that will keep readers guessing from beginning to end while furiously turning the pages along the way.

Twelve years ago, Jubilee Rathman's family was brutally murdered by Detroit mobsters who had ensnared Jubilee's father into laundering money for them and who then slaughtered the family and set their home aflame, believing that Jubilee's father had ratted them out to the authorities and to two newspaper

Purgatory Bay by Bryan Gruley is the second instalment in the Bleak Harbor series but I had no problem reading this as a standalone, having not yet read the first book. Teenager Jubilee Rathman’s promising life as she knows it changes forever overnight when her family is brutally murdered by order of the Detroit mob. Twelve years later, she sets in motion a well-prepared plan for revenge against the people she believes are responsible for the loss of her family. The book alternates between the t ...more

I haven't read the first book of this series so I might have been more attached to the characters if I had. The plot is pretty original and drones as murder weapon is still pretty fresh. This wasn't a whodunit as much as a slow yet often predictable unraveling of why. A couple of hiccups with a couple of twists make this a good read overall and I would read more from the Author.

A bit on the confusing side - protagonists on "opposite" sides suffering similar personal tragedies, a revenge plot quite diabolical but with way too many moving parts, an explosion of characters -especially near the end - still an entertaining and fast moving story.

I was intrigued by several positive reviews so went to purchase the book only to find out it will not be released until January 2020 so grabbed a copy from Net Galley in exchange for a review. First time I have used them and it downl

Another page-turner with surprises from Bryan Gruley. So well written. His descriptions of characters, their clothes, expressions and frame of mind, surroundings, the weather... I'm there.

Disappointing tale from Gruley about a woman, Jubilee Rathman, who sets out to get revenge on anyone and everyone who she thinks is responsible for the murder of her parents and sister and the horrible injuries to her brother in a mob hit. The biggest problem with the book is that Jubilee comes across so nasty, vicious, self-righteous and generally unlikable that I didn't feel an ounce of sympathy towards her. If Gruley wanted us to feel bad for her, which seemed to be the intent, then he failed ...more

Entertaining

This book was entertaining and easy to read. I enjoyed the bit of suspense. It loosely referenced the first book but didn’t go into too much detail which was good.

A diabolical and complicated revenge plan to strike out against multiple "enemies" is launched creating an intriguing and entertaining plot to keep you on the edge of your seat to see what twist is coming next! Excellent character development really strengthens the plot to bring the characters and story to life! You won't want to miss this second installment in the Bleak Harbor series! Kudos to the author for weaving a delightfully complicated story and I hope to read much more from him in the f ...more

Snagged an advance copy of this. What I love is how Gruley blended elements of his superb Starvation Lake trilogy with the pacing and plotting of Bleak Harbor. This one is tense from the jump, and Jubilee is a piece of work. Check it out. You'll like it.

Revenge Is A Dish Best Served Cold

Twelve years before the novel timeline, Jubilee, suffering from a hangover, is sitting in an iron chair in a state police office. She is repeatedly asked for her driver’s license, but she is not cooperative and wants to know why she is here. Finally, one officer shows her a picture of her dead near naked younger brother sprayed out near a pond.

Then, the main storyline shifts to current novel timeline and to a Mikey talking her daughter while driving to the daugh

Thank you to Bryan Gruley and Goodreads.com I won this book in a Giveaway.

Mr. Gruley does it again ! Suspenseful, creative story that leaves you closing the book because you don't want to know what happens, but you force yourself you read it with one eye open ! Loved the twists and turns and the writing flowed very well. Great story, highly recommended !

Innovative crime thriller

This is billed as the second in the Bleak Harbor series. I haven’t read the first book but on reading the blurb, although the location is similar, the characters are different so I can probably safely report that each can be read as a stand-alone. There were certainly no instances in Purgatory Bay which referred back to events not previously covered. Incidentally, I do wonder on occasions whether those who write the blurbs have ever actually had sight of the books they c

Been reading Mr. Gruley's work for a while and they just keep getting better and better. Rather than a typical 'whodunit', PB is more of a 'why done it' and 'will they get away with it.' What's especially impressive is both the technical side of the story - there A LOT of fairly complicated machinations going on that are perhaps (frighteningly) doable - but also the psychological side of the character development. There are more than a few deeply scarred / flawed / messed up people with motivati ...more

Bryan writes great mystery thrillers with interesting and complex characters. I always gobble up his books in a day or two or three because I can't wait to find out what's next. Purgatory Bay did not disappoint. The Michigan and Detroit references make it fun, too. Congrats to Bryan!
I highly recommend the book!

The second trip to Bleak Harbor, MI that Gruley takes you on in PURGATORY BAY demonstrates his talent in telling a detailed complex story smoothly. The wrath and revenge dealt out by Jubilee Rathman befits a Bond villain. The Detroit mob murdered most of her family when she was a high school student and years later she begins her plan for comeuppance. Yes, the plot is complex and very detailed and there are a lot of characters coming in and out of this story, and Gruley handles everything with s ...more

Life was grand for Jubilee Rathman until one fateful night. Years later, the tragedy she suffered still haunts her from her fortified mansion on Purgatory Bay. Living as a recluse, she vows to get payback against those responsible. Purgatory Bay by Bryan Gruley is a hauntingly gripping novel that will keep the reader up long into the night. It has a stunning cast of characters: a mysterious loner, a haunted investigator and a tenacious journalist. I thoroughly enjoyed this novel and give it 4/5 ...more

Purgatory Bay is quite good. A diabolical plan to get even with ones that have preceived to do a girl wrong. 12 years ago, Jubliees' life is changed forever. Everyone thinks she has moved on, how wrong they are. The use of drones, plus other technology makes this book scary, as you think this could actually happen. Second in the series, I can't wait to read more.

Thanks to Netgalley and author for a copy.

I got an advance copy of this book and loved it from the start. Like all of Bryan Gruley's books, it was full of interesting and well developed characters, fast paced and full of twists and turns. I loved Bleak Harbor and this entry, with another original plot and a drone as a murder weapon, did not disappoint.

Bryan Gruley returns to the resort town of Bleak Harbor, Michigan in PURGATORY BAY. It's not Tana French-like, but close, as this series returns without the lead characters of the first book but a couple of secondary characters re-emerge, most notably Katya Malone, who is now Bleak Harbor's police chief. Even so, Malone at best shares top billing with several other characters in the book; it's more of an ensemble piece. I suspect it is the town that will serve as the lead connection if this seri ...more

Purgatory Bay by Bryan Gruley continues what began in Bleak Harbor. While not a straight sequel to the prior book, it features the local area and some of the same characters. There are also numerous references, some far more detailed than others, to the prior book and those events. For that reason, those who have read the prior book will get far more out of this read than those who have not.

Jubilee Rathman lives a life of wealth and splendid isolation in her home on Purgatory Bay near Black Harb

This is the second book in the Bleak Harbor series by Bryan Gruley. Funny thing about this was that it didn’t feel like a second book. It felt like a standalone.

This book was very good but in the beginning it was a little hard to follow. The POV character kept jumping around between Jubilee, Michaela and Katya. I was letting my Kindle read the text to me and since I didn’t see the text shift, I think that was why it was more confusing for me. If I had been reading the text, I think it w

How NOT to write a book: Introduce around a hundred characters, introduce drones with human names to get even more, jump around in time to make things a little complicated, and add a lot of useless descriptions before trying to get to any kind of point. Anyone who reads this book entirely is a very patient person.

This is really a story about Jubilee Rathman. Joshua is badly injured in the attempt on their family and Jubilee is left with the responsibility of helping her brother and

This is the second book in the series but I haven't read the first and was able to follow this one just fine. I found this to be a good story it is set in Denmark and is a murder mystery. I really enjoyed the story it was fast moving and interesting a bit tricky at times keeping track of all the ins and outs about the only complaint I have is there were way too many big big words that I had to go look up to find the meanings!! other than that I would definitely recommend this series.
