Quite something to improve on the first Essence of Martial Arts, but here, John Hennessy goes deeper, broader and is unapologetic in his approach, but he's always fair and balanced in his view. Certainly a book that is told from someone not just experienced in martial arts, but life too. ...more

This book is remarkable in its honesty. John Hennessy shows how the martial arts have expressed themselves throughout his life, both in fighting and growing as a person. Even if you follow another path, there's a lot here to consider and learn from.

The first third of the book has a thorough explanation of which elements of combat the different forms of Wing Chun—John's primary art—teach the student. If you study Wing Chun and are wondering what the point is of doing the same moves over and over
